For a typical 24/7 YouTube Live stream, use RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a supported video codec, and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose resolution and bitrate your encoder and internet connection can sustain continuously. There is no special YouTube “24/7 format” preset: reliability matters more than choosing the highest possible quality.
Recommended format and settings
YouTube accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. For most non-HDR streams, RTMPS is the straightforward choice. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming feed into multiple playback formats for viewers, so you do not need to send a separate format for every device. Use the bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate from YouTube’s table. These are YouTube-published recommendations, not independently measured benchmarks; the accessed help page does not state a publication year.

For example, 1080p30 is a reasonable starting point if your system can hold the appropriate bitrate steadily. If it cannot, lower the resolution or bitrate rather than running at the edge of your connection. The YouTube table also gives minimum rates for 720p and below; check its current table for the codec-specific minimum before setting one.

How much upload capacity do you need?
Your internet connection needs headroom beyond the stream itself. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the stream bitrate. For a 14 Mbps H.264 stream, that means planning for at least 16.8 Mbps of sustained upload capacity for the stream plus the recommended headroom, before accounting for other devices or competing traffic. Include both primary and backup stream bitrates in the calculation if your setup sends both.
Measure sustained upload under conditions similar to the actual stream, including the hours when household or office traffic is busiest. A short speed test is not proof that a connection can carry an uninterrupted feed all day. YouTube warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream; its streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring rather than assuming the network will remain stable.

RTMPS or HLS?
Choose RTMPS for a typical non-HDR stream
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure extension of RTMP and is the simplest default for most standard streams. Use the codec and settings your encoder can maintain reliably.
Use HLS only when your workflow needs it
HLS can serve HDR or codec requirements that RTMP does not support. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments, and it disables the “Ultra low-latency” option. Its HLS setup requirements include TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte ranges. Those constraints make HLS a specific technical choice, not an automatic upgrade for a continuous stream.

Make the stream reliable over long runs
YouTube does not publish a separate codec, container, or encoder profile for streams lasting 24 hours or longer. Its general guidance is to choose a quality your connection can support reliably. Prepare the whole system, not just the encoder settings:
- Test with representative audio, motion, and the actual bitrate before relying on the stream.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and check that the event is viewable on the channel and watch pages and on mobile.
- If you have a backup encoder or failover path, test the handoff before you need it.
- Check local archive recordings so a recording failure does not go unnoticed.
- Consider a UPS for dedicated streaming and network equipment if brief power interruptions are a concern. Size it for the equipment and runtime you need; it cannot prevent an internet outage.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Format settings do not grant rights to the video or audio you broadcast. Before scheduling a continuous stream, make sure you have the necessary rights for every element in the loop, including music, visuals, and material licensed only for limited use. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules apply to live streams as well as uploads; check the current requirements in YouTube Help and use material you own or are authorized to stream. A technically healthy feed can still face restrictions if its content violates YouTube policies.
