Best Encoder Settings for YouTube Live Streaming on a Low-End PC

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with 720p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, an 8 Mbps video bitrate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. This is a sensible baseline from YouTube’s current encoder guidance, not a guarantee that every older PC or internet connection can sustain it. Test with representative motion and audio before going live, then adjust based on encoder performance and YouTube’s stream-health feedback.

Recommended starting settings

Setting Starting value Why it matters
Resolution and frame rate 1280 × 720 at 30 fps (720p30) A practical balance for a low-end PC; YouTube does not publish benchmarks for specific older hardware.
Video codec H.264 YouTube supports H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest and publishes bitrate guidance for it.
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate) YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends CBR.
Video bitrate 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum for 720p30 These are YouTube ingest figures, not a promise of quality or a measurement of your connection.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says the interval must not exceed 4 seconds.
Audio AAC or MP3; 128 kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz These are YouTube’s listed audio settings.
Other video settings Progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC; Rec. 709 for SDR These are additional values in YouTube’s encoder guidance.

For transport, YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; use RTMPS when your encoder supports it because it encrypts the transmission. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1, but its guidance does not say which codec or encoder implementation will run fastest on an unspecified low-end PC. Start with H.264 unless you have a specific reason and compatible encoder setup to choose otherwise. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together

YouTube’s published values below are H.264 ingest guidance. “Minimum” and “recommended” are distinct values: the recommended figure is not a hard minimum. They describe what YouTube receives from the encoder, not a PC performance benchmark or a guaranteed viewer-side quality level.

Output YouTube-listed minimum bitrate YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s current Help figures, accessed October 3, 2026; its recommended ranges depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. See YouTube’s full table and guidance.

When to stay at 720p30

Use 720p30 as your first test configuration when the PC is older or you do not know how much headroom it has. It avoids asking the encoder to produce 60 frames every second while providing a resolution suitable for many talking, teaching, and mostly static streams. That workload comparison is general technical reasoning, not a YouTube benchmark.

When 720p60 may make sense

Choose 720p60 only if motion clarity matters for your content and your system passes a realistic test. YouTube lists the same recommended video bitrate for 720p60 as for 720p30, but 60 fps requires the encoder to produce twice as many frames per second. The platform’s bitrate table does not establish whether your particular CPU or GPU can handle that load.

When to consider 1080p

Do not raise resolution simply because the PC offers the option. YouTube lists higher recommended ingest rates for 1080p—14 Mbps at 30 fps and 17 Mbps at 60 fps—and those figures place more demand on sustained upload capacity. If 720p30 is stable and the scene benefits from more detail, test 1080p30 separately before using it for an event.

If your upload cannot sustain 8 Mbps

YouTube says total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth. If the connection cannot sustain the recommended 8 Mbps video rate for 720p30, lower the bitrate and test; if that still produces an unstable stream or unacceptable image, lower the resolution as well. A speed test is useful, but it does not replace testing the actual stream under representative conditions. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the 720p30 minimum, not as a guarantee that the connection or stream will be reliable at that rate.

Set and test the encoder before going live

  1. Check sustained upload capacity. Run a speed test on the connection and device you plan to use. Leave headroom rather than setting stream bitrate at the connection’s best-case upload result; YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth.
  2. Set the output to 720p30. In your encoder’s output settings, choose 1280 × 720 and 30 fps. Menu names differ between encoder applications, so verify the actual output values rather than relying on a preset name.
  3. Choose H.264 and CBR. Set the video encoder to H.264 and rate control to constant bitrate. Enter 8,000 Kbps for the video bitrate if the connection can sustain it. Keep audio bitrate separate from video bitrate when checking total bandwidth.
  4. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. If the application asks for seconds, enter 2; if it asks for frames, use a value that corresponds to two seconds at your selected frame rate—60 frames at 30 fps.
  5. Configure audio and video format. Use AAC or MP3 audio, 128 kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz, progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC where those controls are available. Use Rec. 709 for SDR.
  6. Connect to YouTube securely where supported. Select RTMPS if your encoder offers it; otherwise use the supported RTMP option. In YouTube Studio, use the stream key for the intended live stream and keep the key private. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains the controls available in Studio.
  7. Run a private or unlisted test before the event. YouTube’s instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Include movement and audio similar to the real broadcast; a static desktop test may not expose problems that appear with fast motion, multiple sources, or louder sound.
  8. Check stream health and messages. Watch YouTube’s live stream health indicators and messages during the test and event. If you see instability, reduce bitrate or output demands and test again instead of assuming that a nominal speed-test result guarantees a stable stream. YouTube’s streaming tips

How to tell which setting is causing trouble

  • Encoder overload or skipped frames: The PC may not be keeping up with the selected resolution, frame rate, or scene workload. Return to 720p30 if you had raised frame rate or resolution, then test again. YouTube does not provide a universal low-end-PC encoder preset.
  • Unstable connection or dropped frames: The bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain consistently. Lower video bitrate, reduce resolution if needed, and repeat the test on the intended connection.
  • Soft or blocky picture: A lower bitrate can reduce image detail, especially in scenes with movement. If your connection has headroom and the encoder is stable, test a higher bitrate within YouTube’s guidance; otherwise prefer a stable lower-resolution stream to an unstable higher-resolution one.
  • Audio problems: Confirm the correct input device, stereo mode, and 44.1 kHz sample rate. Listen to the test from a separate playback device so you can catch muted, distorted, or out-of-sync audio.
  • Keyframe or ingest warnings: Confirm the keyframe interval is 2 seconds and does not exceed 4 seconds; verify that the encoder is sending the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Copyright and live-stream checks

Encoder settings cannot make copyrighted material safe to stream. Before broadcasting music, video clips, or other third-party material, confirm that you have the rights or permission to use it on YouTube. Review YouTube Studio’s warnings and live-stream messages before and during the event, and avoid assuming that a successful technical test means the content is permitted.
