How to Check Whether Your Upload Speed Is Enough for YouTube Live Streaming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check your upload speed, not your download speed. First choose your stream’s resolution, frame rate, and encoder codec; then compare the measured outbound speed with YouTube’s recommended live bitrate and leave about 20% extra capacity. A realistic test stream and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status are the final checks—one speed test cannot guarantee a stable broadcast.

What upload speed do you need for YouTube Live?

There is no single upload-speed requirement for every stream. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on the resolution, frame rate, and codec you send to its live ingest. The figures below are encoder bitrates, not guaranteed ISP speeds; YouTube recommends keeping additional bandwidth available.

Live video setting Codec YouTube-recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps H.264 17 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265 12 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps H.264 14 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps
720p at 60 fps H.264 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265 6 Mbps
720p at 30 fps H.264 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 6 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended live encoder settings, not the separate bitrate recommendations for uploading a prerecorded video. Check the current [YouTube live encoder settings and bitrate table](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702?hl=en) for your exact configuration; the recommendations can change.

How to check your upload speed

  1. Choose your stream settings. Decide on resolution, frame rate, and codec in your streaming software or encoder. “1080p” alone is not enough to identify the required bitrate.
  2. Find the live bitrate recommendation. Use YouTube’s live encoder table for that codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not substitute YouTube’s guidance for ordinary video uploads.
  3. Measure outbound speed on the intended connection. Run an upload-speed test using the computer and network arrangement you plan to stream with. A broadband plan’s advertised speed and a download test do not establish the upload capacity available to your streaming device.
  4. Compare the result with the bitrate and headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room. As arithmetic based on that recommendation, a useful minimum target is total stream bitrate ÷ 0.8. For a single stream set to 10 Mbps, that works out to about 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity. This is a planning calculation, not a promise of stability.
  5. Run a realistic test broadcast. Include the kind of movement and audio your real stream will have. Check the preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room while the test is running.
  6. Adjust and retest if needed. If the test is unstable, reduce the stream bitrate or quality, limit competing network traffic, and, for a computer stream, test with Ethernet. Repeat the realistic test after changing settings.

Why a speed-test result can be misleading

A speed test is a snapshot; streaming needs capacity that remains available while the broadcast is running. YouTube notes that download speed is often greater than upload speed, so a strong download result is not evidence that the outbound connection is sufficient. It also cautions that a home or office connection may be shared, reducing the bandwidth available to one user. Congestion or a network interruption can still affect a stream even after a good test result. See YouTube’s [streaming tips](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853856?hl=en).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Test the actual streaming device and route. A test on a phone or a different network path may not represent the computer or encoder you will use.
  • Account for other network use. Uploads, cloud backups, video calls, and other users’ activity can compete for outbound capacity.
  • Prefer a wired connection for a computer stream. YouTube recommends Ethernet for live streaming from a computer. It can improve the local connection between the computer and router, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet plan. See YouTube’s [live filming tips](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/12340105?co=YOUTUBE._YTVideoType%3Dlivestream&hl=en).

What if you stream to more than one destination?

If your setup sends separate streams to multiple platforms, add the target bitrates together before checking capacity. YouTube advises aiming for upload speed around 1.5 to 2 times the combined bitrate for simulstreaming. That is distinct from the 20% headroom recommendation for a single stream. For example, if two outgoing streams are each set to 10 Mbps, the combined target is 20 Mbps; the stated simulstreaming guidance implies an upload target of roughly 30–40 Mbps. Confirm how your software or service sends streams, because the network load depends on the actual outputs. YouTube’s [guidance on streaming across platforms](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/16404722?hl=en-GB) recommends testing with realistic audio and moving video.

Encoder settings that matter alongside upload speed

Correct encoder settings do not replace adequate upload capacity, but they help keep the stream configuration aligned with YouTube’s guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Match the bitrate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s [encoder settings](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702?hl=en).

Troubleshooting an unstable test stream

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Download speed is high, but upload is low Outbound capacity is lower than inbound capacity, which is common. Base the comparison on the upload result. If it does not leave sufficient headroom, lower bitrate or choose a less demanding resolution or frame rate.
The speed test passes, but the stream drops frames or shows poor health The speed result was a snapshot; congestion, shared use, or interruptions may reduce available capacity during streaming. Run a representative test while limiting competing traffic. Reduce bitrate or quality and test again.
The stream is unstable on Wi-Fi The wireless link between the computer and router may be inconsistent. Connect the computer to the router with Ethernet where practical, then repeat the test. Ethernet does not raise the ISP plan’s upload limit.
One destination works, but a simulstream setup struggles The outgoing bitrate for multiple destinations may exceed the available upload capacity. Add the target bitrates for all destinations, apply YouTube’s 1.5–2× guidance, and test the complete setup.
A bitrate figure seems to fit, but the selected stream still fails The figure may be for a different codec, frame rate, resolution, or for prerecorded-video uploads rather than live ingestion. Recheck the live encoder table against the exact settings in your encoder.
