Fix OBS Black Screen on a 24/7 YouTube Product Showcase Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If OBS is showing a black screen, first find out where the image disappears: in the OBS preview, in a local recording, or only on YouTube. Then check the selected source and scene, test the recording/output path, and inspect YouTube Live Control Room if the preview and recording look right. The right fix depends on which of those stages is failing—and on whether you are capturing a display, window, game, camera, image, or media file.

First, locate where the picture disappears

Before changing settings, identify the first place the image goes black. Check the active OBS scene and source, make a short local recording, and compare both with the YouTube stream. This separates a capture problem from an OBS output problem or a YouTube ingestion problem.

  • OBS preview is black: Start with the source, its visibility, the selected display or window, capture method, platform permissions, and any missing input signal.
  • OBS preview looks right, but the local recording is black: Investigate OBS output and recording configuration rather than changing the capture source first.
  • Preview and recording look right, but YouTube is black or unhealthy: Check the encoder output, stream status, error messages, and outbound connection in YouTube Live Control Room.

In the active scene, make sure the intended source is enabled and visible, points to the correct window or display, and is not covered by another source. If the source is a camera or external video input, confirm that it is providing a signal. The exact source and operating system determine which further checks apply.

Fix a black OBS preview

Check the source and signal

  1. In OBS, select the scene you intend to stream and inspect its Sources list. Confirm that the intended source is present, visible, and not hidden behind an opaque source higher in the scene.
  2. Open the source properties and verify that the correct display, application window, game, camera, image, or media file is selected. If the window or display changed, select the current one.
  3. For a camera or other external input, check that the device is connected, powered, selected in the source properties, and producing a signal. Do not buy a capture card or camera as a generic fix: that only makes sense when the actual setup requires external video capture.
  4. If the source depends on operating-system capture permissions, verify that OBS is allowed to access the relevant screen, window, camera, or input on your platform.

Windows laptops with integrated and discrete GPUs

On some Windows laptops, GPU selection and the display-capture method can affect whether a display appears in OBS. OBS’s laptop guidance documents a newer Windows display-capture method for Windows 10 version 1903 or later with OBS 27 or later, and describes the issue as historical. Its version-specific advice is not a universal fix: check your current Windows and OBS versions and the source properties before changing GPU preferences. See the OBS laptop troubleshooting guide for the documented method.

The guide recommends keeping OBS on the default high-power GPU and trying the Windows 10 capture method manually if automatic selection fails. Follow those instructions only if your setup matches the guide; do not apply a Windows laptop GPU change to a different operating system or source type.

If the preview works but recording or YouTube is black

Local recording is black

A good preview with a black local recording points downstream of the capture source. Review OBS’s output and recording configuration, then make another short recording and play the file back before changing the scene. Confirm that the recording is being saved to the expected location and that the playback test covers the same scene and media you plan to stream.

Only the YouTube stream is black

If the preview and local recording both show the product correctly, focus on the encoder-to-YouTube path. Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the preview, stream health, and any error messages. YouTube advises checking the encoder output and the strength of the outbound connection; repeatedly changing a capture source is unlikely to help if that source is already visible in OBS and in the recording. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Separate performance problems from capture problems

A black source and an overloaded system are different symptoms, though performance problems can affect the output. If the stream stutters, lags, or OBS reports “encoding overloaded,” OBS says rendering uses GPU resources. Reduce unnecessary GPU work, simplify a demanding scene, or remove heavy browser sources as a diagnostic. OBS also suggests running the program as administrator on Windows as a performance troubleshooting step; it is not a guaranteed cure for a black capture source. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

Meeting OBS’s basic system requirements does not guarantee that a particular computer can stream a particular scene. CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Check the configuration and actual load rather than assuming a machine is sufficient from its specifications alone; consult OBS system requirements.

Verify the stream before relying on it

  1. Test the real content. Before going live, preview and test motion and audio that resemble the actual product showcase. A still desktop image does not prove that moving footage, transitions, or audio will work correctly.
  2. Use settings your connection can sustain. YouTube advises choosing reliable settings for the available upload connection and checking the encoder and connection during the test.
  3. Check the RTMP/RTMPS profile. YouTube’s guidance for this profile specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Set bitrate and resolution according to the chosen quality and available connection rather than copying a value without considering your setup. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates guidance.
  4. Confirm the actual YouTube output. In Live Control Room, verify that the preview and player show the expected product image, and inspect stream health and error messages. YouTube’s encoder tips also recommend checking the event from the channel or watch page and on mobile devices: YouTube encoder tips.
  5. Keep monitoring during the event. A successful test confirms only what worked during that test. Monitor the live stream’s audio, video, health status, and messages rather than assuming a continuous stream will remain healthy without checks.

When another streaming route makes sense

YouTube supports software encoders such as OBS as well as hardware encoders. The sensible choice depends on whether the source is compatible, the required codec and protocol, the load on the host computer, the monitoring and recovery needs, and cost. External capture hardware is relevant when the actual source is a camera or other video input; it is not a general remedy for an unspecified OBS black screen. YouTube documents supported encoder protocols and requirements at its encoder settings page.

HLS is a documented YouTube ingestion option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, but it has specific encoder requirements and higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. It is not a first-line fix for a black screen. Consider it only when the codec or protocol you need calls for it; details are in YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Copyright and continuous showcase checks

Before looping a product video, confirm that you have the necessary rights to every video and audio element. A product showcase still needs to comply with YouTube’s copyright rules, and a continuous or repeated format should offer viewers meaningful, original material rather than relying on repetition alone. Review the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a loop.

Common symptoms and what to check

What you see First checks Next action
Black in OBS preview Active scene, source visibility and layer order, selected display or window, capture method, permissions, and input signal. Correct the source configuration. On a supported Windows laptop setup, consult the version-specific OBS laptop guide.
Preview works; local recording is black OBS output and recording configuration, save location, and playback of a new short test. Fix and retest the recording path before changing a working capture source.
Preview and recording work; YouTube is black Live Control Room preview, stream health, error messages, encoder output, and outbound connection. Resolve the issue indicated by the YouTube status or encoder rather than repeatedly changing the scene source.
Stutter, lag, or “encoding overloaded” GPU load and unnecessary rendering work, scene complexity, browser sources, encoder, resolution, and frame rate. Reduce unnecessary load and test again; use OBS’s performance guide for further diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Does a black OBS preview always mean YouTube is offline?

No. A black preview points first to the source or capture path. Check YouTube separately if the OBS preview and local recording look correct.

Should I buy a capture card to fix an OBS black screen?

Not without confirming that the failed source is an external camera or video input that needs capture hardware. A capture card is not a universal fix for display, window, game, image, or media-file sources.
