To run an animated story continuously, loop a prepared video with FFmpeg, encode it to a format your streaming destination accepts, and send it to that destination’s ingest URL with a stream key. For YouTube Live, a typical starting point is H.264 video, AAC audio, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. The example below is a starting configuration—not a tested, universal production command. A true 24/7 operation also needs process monitoring, upload headroom, and a plan for recordings and recovery.
What “24/7” means for an animated story stream
In this setup, “24/7” means continuously sending a live feed made from prepared media. FFmpeg reads one video or a sequence of files, optionally filters them, encodes and muxes the result, then delivers it to a platform. It does not make a camera livestream, and a looping feed is not the same as a live animation rendered interactively.
Choose between one rendered story file that repeats and a playlist that rotates through multiple files. One file is simpler to validate; a playlist makes it easier to change the running order, but transitions and audio joins need testing. Neither approach is universally better: the right choice depends on how often the content changes and how consistent the source files are.
Prepare and inspect your story video
Before streaming, make the source files as consistent as practical. Check dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, audio tracks, and duration. Confirm that the animation has the audio you intend to broadcast; if it is silent, plan to create or map an audio track rather than assuming the example command will work unchanged.

Use ffprobe from the same FFmpeg installation to inspect a file:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i story.mp4
Read the stream details in the output, including codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio presence. Then test a short segment using your installed FFmpeg build and the destination’s preview or test mode, if available. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly, so check that each option is supported by your installed version: FFmpeg documentation.
Loop one video indefinitely with FFmpeg
For a single prepared file, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats the input without a scheduled end. A YouTube-oriented starting example is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i story.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST-URL/STREAM-KEY'
Replace the ingest placeholder with the RTMPS ingest address supplied by your platform and replace the key placeholder with the stream key. This example assumes the source has usable audio, targets 30 frames per second, and that the destination accepts H.264/AAC in an FLV container over RTMPS. It uses a 60-frame GOP, which is a two-second interval at 30 fps. Confirm the destination’s current requirements and adapt the frame rate, GOP, bitrate control, and ingest protocol accordingly.

-re reads the file at approximately its native playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. -stream_loop -1 loops the input indefinitely. -c:v libx264 selects software H.264 encoding; -preset veryfast trades some compression efficiency for lower encoding effort. -tune stillimage may suit mostly static artwork, but evaluate it with your actual animation. The pixel format and audio settings are common compatibility choices, not requirements for every destination.
Do not put a real stream key in a public script, screenshot, or shared log. Store it in a protected configuration or secret store, restrict file permissions, and replace the key promptly if it is exposed. A key grants the ability to send a feed to the associated channel.
Build a rotating playlist instead of repeating one file
For a sequence of files, create a concat-demuxer list such as stories.txt:
file 'story-01.mp4'
file 'story-02.mp4'
file 'story-03.mp4'
Then loop the playlist and encode the combined output:

This approach is easiest when the inputs have compatible stream layouts and timing. The concat demuxer does not magically make different codecs, dimensions, or audio arrangements seamless. Check the transitions, duration, and sound at each join. If the inputs need filtering or re-encoding to match, FFmpeg’s concat filter may be appropriate; FFmpeg’s FAQ says this operation is recommended when re-encoding is needed: FFmpeg FAQ on concatenating video files. A concat filter graph must account for each input’s video and audio streams, so test the exact graph with your files before making it the unattended source.
Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes for the destination
There are no universal live settings: follow the current ingest guidance for your platform, then ensure your encoder and internet connection can sustain them. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends the following video bitrates for these examples:
| YouTube H.264 output | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed best settings for every animation, encoder, or connection. YouTube also recommends roughly 20% upload headroom beyond the stream bitrate. Its streaming guidance warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Check your sustained upload capacity under realistic network conditions, not only a brief speed-test peak. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for current platform recommendations; requirements may change.
The example command does not set a target bitrate or constant-bitrate rate control, so it is not by itself a complete match for YouTube’s CBR recommendation. For a production command, set the encoder’s bitrate and buffer options to the destination’s current specification, and verify the resulting stream in the platform’s ingest preview. Do not increase resolution or frame rate without checking both encoder capacity and available upload bandwidth.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. The example’s -g 60 corresponds to two seconds only at 30 fps; if you change the frame rate, adjust the GOP accordingly. The destination may have other requirements, so do not treat YouTube’s values as universal settings for other platforms.
Keep the stream running unattended
FFmpeg can send the media, but a command alone does not guarantee 24/7 availability. Plan for process failures, network interruptions, full disks, machine restarts, and changes to your source material.
- Supervise the process: run FFmpeg under a service manager or a container with an appropriate restart policy. Set restart behavior deliberately so a bad configuration does not create an endless crash loop.
- Monitor meaningful failures: alert on process exit, loss of ingest, and low disk space. Check the platform’s stream health and preview as well as the local process status.
- Protect local recordings: if you record a local copy, rotate files or otherwise cap storage growth. A nonstop recording will eventually exhaust a finite disk.
- Keep recovery materials: back up the source videos and configuration. Store the stream key separately and securely.
- Test before relying on it: confirm moving video and audio in the preview, inspect a loop boundary or playlist transition, and verify that a local recording—if used—can be played back.
- Consider power continuity: a UPS can provide a limited bridge through some power interruptions, but it cannot prevent internet or platform failures and does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
Automatic restarts can restore a process after it exits, but they do not by themselves prove that the platform is receiving healthy video and audio. Monitor both sides of the connection.
Choose between a stream copy and re-encoding
Re-encoding gives you control over output codec, frame rate, pixel format, and bitrate, at the cost of CPU or supported hardware-encoder capacity. Stream copy avoids video re-encoding when the source already matches the destination, but offers less ability to correct incompatible media properties. Test whether the destination accepts the source’s codecs and container before relying on copy mode. For an always-on stream, also watch for variable source timing, bitrate spikes, and playlist joins that can undermine a seemingly compatible setup.

Why a 24/7 YouTube live stream may not be archived
A continuous broadcast is not a guarantee of a complete YouTube archive. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the whole story stream matters, do not rely on a single uninterrupted session’s YouTube archive; record locally and verify the recordings. You can also plan intentional shorter sessions, while recognizing that this changes the broadcast schedule and requires a restart plan. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance because archive behavior is platform-specific and can change: YouTube Help on live stream archives.
