Before broadcasting, confirm your channel is eligible, check rights to everything in the recordings, and make clear that the footage is prerecorded rather than a live performance.
Choose where the stream will run
For YouTube, the two practical approaches are local encoding and cloud streaming. YouTube’s encoder guide explains how to connect an encoder to a live stream and lists both encoder software and a cloud service for continuous prerecorded video. That listing is not a comparison or a guarantee of service quality.
- Local encoder: Playback and the outgoing stream run on a computer you control. The computer, encoder, playback source, and internet connection must remain operational for the stream to continue.
- Cloud service: Upload recordings and manage the broadcast remotely. The provider runs the stream, so your home computer does not need to stay on. Check the service’s actual playlist, reconnect, monitoring, destination, and archive controls before choosing it.
Compare options by where playback runs, how looping and reconnection work, what you can monitor or replace remotely, whether the service supports your destination, and how it handles rights and archives. The available YouTube setup guidance does not establish a comparative reliability or cost winner.
Prepare your channel and gameplay files
Confirm YouTube live access
Before configuring playback, check YouTube’s live-streaming requirements. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The minimum age for live streaming is 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you plan to go live.

Review the rights and contents of every recording
Make sure you have the right to rebroadcast the gameplay and any music, licensed tracks, overlays, or other material included in it. YouTube warns that third-party content can cause issues during a live broadcast; a Content ID claim may also be made after the stream ends if it is archived. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and the relevant game publisher’s permissions. Having recorded the footage yourself does not by itself establish that every included track or other asset is cleared.
Build a repeatable program
Arrange the recordings in the order you want viewers to see them. You can use a playlist or prepare one continuous program file, depending on the playback source you choose. Preview the full sequence, transitions, and audio; confirm that the final item leads back to the start if you want a loop. Playlist and repeat controls differ between products, so verify them in the encoder or service you actually use rather than assuming YouTube’s general setup guide configures them for you.

Set up a local encoder for YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, create a live stream. Open the live control room, create or select the broadcast, and copy its stream URL and stream key. YouTube says starting the encoder creates the watch page.
- Configure your encoder’s playback source. Add the prepared gameplay program or playlist and set playback to continue or repeat using that product’s controls. Preview playback before sending it to YouTube.
- Enter the YouTube connection details. Paste the stream URL and key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Start the encoder and verify the output. Confirm in the live control room that YouTube receives the stream, then check the public watch page, picture, and audio. A short test run is useful before relying on a longer broadcast.
- Keep the local setup running. The computer, playback source, encoder, and network connection all need to keep working. Monitor for playback ending, frozen output, or a dropped connection, and know how you will restart the encoder or restore the playlist.
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide describes how media-playlist segments can be concatenated into a continuous, decodable stream. It is written for encoder vendors and is not a consumer walkthrough for configuring an OBS playlist; follow the actual encoder’s documentation for its controls.
Label prerecorded gameplay honestly
A continuous broadcast of recorded footage is not the same thing as a live gameplay session. Use the destination’s available disclosure controls and avoid titles or descriptions that imply you are playing in real time.

On Twitch, use the Rerun setting and put “[Rerun]” in both the stream title and the go-live notification. Twitch warns that “Failing to properly label your stream as a Rerun can damage community trust.” See Twitch’s On-Demand Content guidance. This is Twitch-specific guidance; do not assume the same setting or wording applies on YouTube or another platform.
Plan for interruptions and archives
A “24/7” setup describes the intended schedule, not a guarantee that an individual broadcast will run forever without interruption. Plan how you will detect a stopped playlist, frozen picture, network failure, or encoder shutdown, and how you will restart the stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one broadcast can run indefinitely or guarantee how longer sessions will be archived, so account for platform and service behavior when planning continuity.
