To simulcast an existing radio feed on YouTube from a VPS, run an encoder such as FFmpeg on the server, give it the station’s audio feed and a video track, then publish to a YouTube Live event over RTMPS using that event’s ingest details. The VPS must stay online and the process must be supervised for an unattended broadcast. Before starting, confirm that your channel is eligible and that your music and other content are cleared for YouTube Live.
What you need before you start
- A reachable radio feed: identify the feed URL and whether it is a direct audio stream or a playlist or manifest. Note its format and how it behaves when a connection drops; those details determine FFmpeg’s input handling.
- A VPS that can sustain the job: it must be able to reach the source and continuously send the outgoing stream to YouTube. Check your provider’s rules and the plan’s network limits for sustained outbound streaming. No particular provider, plan size or bandwidth allowance is established here.
- A visual track: YouTube Live is a video stream, so a radio broadcast needs video as well as audio. A station logo or other still image, or a visualizer, can serve as the presentation. These are practical options, not a YouTube-prescribed radio format.
- YouTube Live access: YouTube’s eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days; it also says streamers must be at least 16.
- Permission for the YouTube simulcast: confirm that the station’s agreements cover this use, the relevant territories and all included music. A terrestrial or web-radio license should not be assumed to include YouTube Live rights.
Clear rights before you go live
YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility on the content provider to hold the necessary rights for live content, including music rights. A license to broadcast music on radio does not, by itself, establish that the station may simulcast it on YouTube. Check the station’s contracts and territory-specific obligations with the relevant rights holders or counsel before scheduling the stream.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even licensed material can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. A Content ID match is not proof that the station has permission.
Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or configure the event. For an initial check, use a private or unlisted event if those options are available for your channel.
- Copy the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown for the event or channel. Use the displayed endpoint rather than relying on a generic address: the protocol, endpoint, path and port must match what YouTube provides.
- Store the key as a server-side secret or protected environment setting. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, log excerpt or support request.
- If the key is exposed or rejected, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the VPS configuration with the replacement. The encoder cannot authenticate with the old key after you switch.
YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP. It is the recommended secure option for an ordinary stream when both the endpoint and encoder support it. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, but this walkthrough uses RTMPS as the simpler FFmpeg relay path.

Prepare FFmpeg’s audio and video output
FFmpeg can read a radio feed, combine it with a visual and publish over the RTMP protocol family, which includes RTMPS. The source-side input flags depend on the feed: a direct MP3 or AAC URL, a playlist, and a manifest are not interchangeable. The outgoing stream must also meet YouTube’s current encoder requirements. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. Check the current guide and Live Control Room before selecting output settings; bitrate recommendations can change.
For a common radio presentation, transcode the visual to a supported video format and encode the audio to a supported format if the source cannot be passed through as-is. A static image generally avoids the extra visual motion of an animated presentation, but either approach still needs a valid video track. Match output resolution, frame rate and bitrate to the visual, the server’s capacity and your available upload bandwidth; do not choose a bitrate that the VPS cannot sustain.

There is no single safe FFmpeg command for every station feed. The following is a configuration template, not a tested universal command: replace the placeholders, verify the source-specific input options, and construct the output value exactly as required by the RTMPS URL and key shown in Live Control Room. Keep the actual key outside the command text and any public logs.

Those assumptions may not fit a playlist, manifest, unusual source codec or source that requires headers or authentication. The -re option is commonly used to read file-like input at real-time pace; whether it is appropriate for a particular live network input should be checked against that input’s behavior. The video bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval and buffer values are placeholders, not prescribed values. At 30 frames per second, for example, a 60-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds; use a matching interval for the frame rate you actually choose. The command’s FLV output container is part of this RTMP-style publishing pattern; confirm compatibility with the selected codecs and current ingest requirements.

Do not paste a real key into a shared shell history, public code repository or diagnostic output. Use a protected secret mechanism suitable for your server, and ensure only the account running the encoder can read it.
Start with a test, then supervise the VPS process
- Run the encoder against a private or unlisted test event before a public broadcast. Confirm the source opens and that FFmpeg is producing both the intended audio and video.
- Watch Live Control Room for stream health and messages. A running FFmpeg process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a usable program.
- Listen to the YouTube preview and check that audio is continuous, in sync with the visual and free of unexpected silence or clipping. Verify that the chosen image or visualizer appears as intended.
- For continuous operation, arrange process supervision and monitoring so an operator can detect a failed encoder or unavailable source and restart or investigate it. A foreground command is useful for a test, but it does not by itself provide unattended recovery. Choose a supervisor and restart policy appropriate to your VPS; no one tool or interval is mandated here.
Common failures and what to check

Costs and operating trade-offs
A VPS relay requires an ongoing server plan and sustained outbound network capacity, but no particular provider price or plan capability is established here. Check those limits directly with your hosting provider. FFmpeg is the command-line encoder in this workflow; it offers a headless way to run on a VPS, while a graphical encoder may be easier for designing scenes but was not assessed here for VPS resource needs.

A still image keeps the visual presentation simple; an animated visualizer adds motion but does not remove the need to meet YouTube’s audio/video requirements. Likewise, a one-off command is useful for testing, while a dependable unattended stream requires supervision and monitoring. These are operational choices rather than guarantees of uptime.
