If audio goes silent between promotional videos in a YouTube Live loop, first find where the gap occurs: at a handoff between playback sources in OBS, inside the video files themselves, or in the stream’s delivery to YouTube. Check the clip edges and OBS source settings before changing YouTube’s ingest settings; a local clip transition and a failed broadcast segment are different problems.
First identify where the silence begins
Note whether the gap happens exactly when one promo ends and another starts, whether it is already audible in the source files, or whether the broadcast loses audio or video more broadly. If possible, make a local OBS recording of the transition and compare it with the individual clips. This helps distinguish a playback handoff from a delivery problem without changing the live setup prematurely.
Find the playback arrangement in OBS
- Separate Media Sources: Each video is its own source, and OBS switches between sources or scenes.
- VLC Video playlist: One VLC Video source plays a list of files.
- Media Playlist Source plugin: A plugin manages the playlist and transitions.
- One rendered file: The full promo sequence has already been assembled and exported as a continuous video.
The arrangement matters: looping an individual file is not the same as looping a playlist, and a handoff between distinct sources is not guaranteed to be gapless by OBS documentation.
Check the source type you use
Separate Media Sources
- In OBS, open the scene containing the promo sources and select each video’s Media Source.
- Check the source’s Loop setting if that individual file should repeat. This setting repeats one file; it does not provide a documented guarantee of gapless audio when OBS switches between different sources.
- Listen to the last few seconds and first few seconds of each adjacent file. Look for silence encoded at the end or start, a late audio fade-in, or an edit that leaves a pause.
- Record the transition locally in OBS and listen to the recording. If the gap is audible there too, investigate the files or the source handoff before investigating YouTube ingestion.
VLC Video playlist
OBS’s VLC Video source provides playlist controls, including Loop Playlist, shuffle behavior, Visibility Behaviour, and Audio Track selection. VLC must be installed for this source type; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open the VLC Video source’s properties in OBS.
- Confirm the intended files and their order in the playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the list should repeat. Check shuffle behavior if the promos must play in a fixed order.
- Check Visibility Behaviour. A source that stops or restarts when hidden may not behave as expected when scenes or source visibility change.
- Check Audio Track and select the track that contains the intended program audio.
- Test the transition in a local recording, including the last item returning to the first.
Media Playlist Source plugin
If a plugin controls playback, check its release notes for the installed version before concluding that OBS or YouTube is at fault. The OBS Media Playlist Source update history records fixes involving continuing to the next item after a transition and looping when the next path is the same as the previous one. Its notes say versions from 0.1.0 onward require OBS 31. Compare the installed plugin and OBS versions with the notes, then retest the affected transition.
One pre-rendered continuous file
If handoffs between separate sources remain troublesome, assemble the promo sequence in an editor, export it as one continuous file, and test that file as a single OBS source. This removes transitions between separate playback sources, but it cannot remove silence already present in the edits or export. OBS’s format guidance covers container and codec compatibility and notes that fragmented MP4/MOV can suit common editing software; it does not endorse a particular editor or promise this workflow will cure every gap.

Separate OBS playback gaps from YouTube ingest gaps
YouTube’s HLS setup guidance describes ingest requirements, not local transitions between OBS clips. Google’s DASH encoder guidance makes a different distinction: a failed media-segment PUT corresponds to a gap in the video stream and calls for retry logic. Treat this as an ingest branch only when encoder or delivery logs show failed segments or the broadcast itself has broader interruptions; it is not evidence that a local OBS source handoff caused the problem.
HLS settings are not a fix for clip-boundary silence
YouTube Help specifies HLS segment durations of 1–4 seconds and recommends 44.1 kHz audio for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1, with 128 Kbps stereo audio or 384 Kbps 5.1 audio. These are HLS ingestion recommendations, not settings that repair silence between promo files.

DASH segment errors are a separate failure class
Google for Developers recommends DASH media segments between 1 and 5 seconds for ingestion performance and latency tradeoffs. Its guidance says a failed segment PUT corresponds to a gap in the video stream and recommends retry logic. Those segment durations concern DASH delivery, not the interval between one promo file and the next.
Choose a loop arrangement that fits the way you update promos
| Arrangement | Where transitions happen | Order and audio control | Dependencies and testing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate Media Sources | At OBS source or scene handoffs | Each clip is managed separately; inspect the file edges and source handoff | Uses OBS Media Sources; test transitions in a local recording |
| VLC Video playlist | Within the playlist source | Playlist order, loop, shuffle, visibility behavior, and audio-track selection are available | Requires VLC, with matching 64-bit architecture for 64-bit OBS; test the full loop |
| Media Playlist Source plugin | Within the plugin-managed playlist | Depends on plugin behavior and version | Check version notes; the history records fixes for transition continuation and repeated paths |
| One pre-rendered file | In the edited and exported file | Sequence and edits are fixed in the rendered video | Uses one OBS source; easier to test as a whole, but updating promos requires a new export |
The available documentation does not establish that any one arrangement is universally gapless. Choose based on whether you need to update clips individually, control playlist order and tracks in OBS, or maintain one edited sequence.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you hear or see | Likely place to investigate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A pause occurs at the same point between two clips, including in a local recording | Clip edges or OBS source handoff | Listen to the end and beginning of both files; verify the transition and test again locally. |
| One file repeats, but the whole promo sequence does not | Per-file Media Source loop versus playlist loop | Use the playlist’s Loop Playlist control for a repeating list; a Media Source’s Loop repeats that source’s file. |
| A VLC playlist selects the wrong audio or behaves differently when hidden | VLC Video source properties | Check Audio Track and Visibility Behaviour, then record a test transition. |
| A plugin stops after a transition or does not advance as expected | Plugin version or compatibility | Check the installed version’s release notes and confirm the OBS version requirement; the plugin history records relevant transition and repeated-path fixes. |
| Video or audio gaps affect the broadcast beyond clip boundaries, and delivery logs show failed segment uploads | Encoder-to-YouTube ingest | Investigate the failed segment delivery and retry behavior using the relevant HLS or DASH setup guidance; do not treat a segment failure as proof of an OBS clip-transition fault. |
| The silence remains after combining promos into one file | Edited content or export | Inspect the rendered file at the same boundary; a single source cannot remove silence already present in its content. |
