To loop a prerecorded store promotion on YouTube Live, turn on Loop for the video in an encoder such as OBS Studio, then send that encoder’s feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. YouTube Studio manages the broadcast; it does not provide the loop control. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder, check YouTube’s preview, and then click Go live.
What you need before you start
- A video file you have permission to use, including its soundtrack and any images, logos, or other material in it.
- An encoder. OBS Studio can loop a local file; YouTube also supports hardware encoders, but special hardware is not required for this basic workflow.
- A sufficiently stable upload connection for the output settings you choose. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into playback formats, so choose a quality your connection can sustain.
- Access to YouTube Studio and Live Control Room for the channel that will broadcast.
YouTube’s menus and available controls can vary. Confirm the current options shown in your channel’s Live Control Room before you schedule or start the broadcast.
Schedule or create the YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live.
- Open Manage to schedule a broadcast if you want to promote it in advance. Scheduled streams can appear as upcoming, and viewers can opt in to notifications. If you want to begin immediately, use Stream to create or start a stream.
- Set the title, description, audience, and privacy. Choose Public, Private, or Unlisted deliberately. Unlisted is useful for a rehearsal; use the intended visibility for the final broadcast.
- Review any monetization or rights settings that apply to your channel and promotion. These controls are separate from the decision to loop the video.
- Decide whether viewers should be able to pause or rewind by reviewing the DVR setting. Also check whether auto-start and auto-stop should let encoder actions start and stop the broadcast.
Set up the prerecorded promotion in OBS
- Create or select a scene in OBS Studio.
- Add a Media Source and choose the promotion file stored on your computer. OBS documents support for MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM files.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. Loop is off by default; with it enabled, OBS restarts the file when playback reaches the end.
- Check the canvas framing so the promotion appears as intended. Confirm that its audio is audible in OBS and routed to the stream; a visible video preview alone does not verify sound.
- If you need to loop a playlist rather than one file, OBS also has a VLC Video source with a Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed for that source.
Connect OBS to YouTube and choose encoder settings
- In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- In OBS streaming settings, enter the URL and key, or choose YouTube if OBS offers a suitable service preset. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the connection.
- Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), use a keyframe interval of two seconds, and do not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio.
- Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to match the promotion and what your upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate guidance includes these examples:

These figures are YouTube’s published guidance for the listed H.264 formats, not a promise that a particular connection will sustain them. The table differs for other codecs, resolutions, or frame rates; consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the format you plan to send. If the upload connection is unstable, lower the output settings rather than assuming the recommended bitrate will work on that network.
Test the loop before going public
- For a rehearsal, use an unlisted broadcast so you can inspect the stream without making it public.
- Start streaming from OBS and check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream health indicators.
- Test picture framing, motion, audio, and the transition when the file loops back to its beginning. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement.
- For a scheduled event, start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the planned start time, as YouTube recommends. When the preview is correct, click Go live if the broadcast has not started automatically.
Starting the encoder alone does not necessarily make a scheduled broadcast live: the encoder must connect, and the broadcast may still require you to start it in Live Control Room.

Monitor the broadcast and end it cleanly
Keep an eye on the preview and stream health while the promotion runs. At the end, click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that this automatic archiving applies to a stream lasting 12 hours or longer.
Common problems and fixes
- The video plays once and stops: Open the OBS Media Source properties and enable Loop. The option is off by default.
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that OBS is using the stream URL and key from the correct channel and broadcast. Verify the encoder is actually streaming and that the key has not been mistyped or replaced.
- The scheduled stream is not live: Confirm the encoder is connected, inspect the preview, and click Go live if required. A scheduled broadcast still needs the encoder feed to start.
- The picture appears but the soundtrack does not: Check the Media Source’s audio in OBS, confirm it is routed to the stream, and verify the preview with sound before going live.
- The stream is unstable: Select a bitrate and quality the upload connection can sustain. Check the encoder output against YouTube’s guidance for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than relying on an example for a different format.
- The promotion is framed incorrectly: Adjust the source and canvas in OBS, then check the YouTube preview before starting the public broadcast.
- Viewers cannot rewind, or the broadcast starts unexpectedly: Review the DVR, auto-start, and auto-stop settings in Live Control Room.
