You can run a Malayalam radio station on YouTube around the clock by sending a continuous audiovisual feed from an encoder such as OBS to YouTube Live. The essentials are an eligible, verified channel, a private stream key, a reliable internet connection and power, visuals you have permission to use, and rights for every recording and composition in the broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, so a music licence does not automatically prevent an interruption.
What you need before going live
- An eligible YouTube channel: YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the current requirements and activation flow in YouTube’s live-streaming guide; allow time for activation before your planned launch.
- An encoder: OBS Studio is one option. The encoder sends your feed to YouTube using a server URL and stream key.
- An audiovisual feed: An audio-led radio stream still needs video. Use station artwork, a schedule, a presenter camera, or a visual loop that the station is authorized to show.
- Sustainable internet and power: The connection and encoder must keep sending data continuously. YouTube advises a reliable connection and adequate outbound bandwidth; a wired connection may help where Wi-Fi is unstable. A UPS for the encoder and network equipment can help bridge brief power interruptions, but its runtime depends on the connected load.
- Music and other content permissions: Confirm rights for recordings, compositions, interviews, jingles, and visuals for live use and any replay or archive, in the territories where the stream is available.
Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Verify and check eligibility. Complete channel verification and confirm there are no live-stream restrictions. Follow the current activation prompts in YouTube Studio and schedule the launch only after the channel is enabled.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the current flow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream details supplied by YouTube. If you use a custom RTMP configuration, enter the server URL and key in the corresponding fields. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it, place it in a public document, or include it in screenshots.
- Build and check the scene. Add the station’s authorized logo, schedule, or other visual source, and configure the audio input from your station chain. Watch and listen to a private or unlisted test before the public launch. Make sure the visual does not disappear or freeze in a way that misrepresents the station.
- Start the encoder and follow Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that stream health is acceptable before selecting the control to go live. Keep Live Control Room available for monitoring.
- Record a local copy. Configure a separate local recording if you need an archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams over 12 hours may not be captured. This is archive guidance, not a stated maximum permitted duration. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Choose stable audio and video settings
YouTube currently recommends RTMPS for encoder streaming. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. For an audio-led station with a static or lightly animated visual, prioritize stable delivery over unnecessary resolution or frame rate. YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates include:
| Output | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not minimum requirements or measurements of your connection. The full codec and resolution tables are in YouTube’s encoder settings guide. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; it also lists 44.1 kHz stereo audio and 128 kbps stereo audio. Use settings your encoder supports and test the actual program feed before relying on it continuously.
Leave upload headroom rather than aiming to use all available bandwidth. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend about 20% spare capacity. That margin helps absorb normal network variation, but does not guarantee continuity during an outage. Test while the station’s usual network traffic is present, and monitor stream health in Live Control Room.

Make a 24/7 operation manageable
Plan for outages and recovery
A 24/7 stream depends on the encoder, power, internet service, and YouTube connection all continuing to work. Assign someone to monitor the stream, decide who responds to alerts, and document how to restart the encoder and reconnect the feed. Test recovery procedures before launch. A UPS may cover a short power interruption if sized for your actual devices and desired runtime; it cannot replace a dependable internet connection or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
Decide how to handle archives
If preserving a YouTube replay matters, schedule sessions shorter than 12 hours rather than assuming a continuous stream will be archived. Keep an independent local recording as a backup. Confirm that your permissions cover both live use and archived playback; a right to broadcast live does not by itself establish permission for a replay.

Keep a rights and operations log
Record the source and permission status of music, recordings, jingles, interviews, and visual material. Include territory, permitted use, dates, and any archive restrictions. Separately log stream start times, encoder settings, interruptions, and fixes. This makes it easier for the next operator to diagnose a problem or verify that a replacement track is cleared.
Music rights: the issue to resolve before launch
YouTube says that all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material from another live broadcast. A match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination. YouTube also says that if you have licensed third-party content for a stream, you should ask the owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A licence therefore may not, on its own, stop automated enforcement.

YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains matching and allowlisting. Its live-stream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary worldwide rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights, and to satisfy relevant territory regulations. These are platform terms, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
The licensing route depends on the station’s operating country, audience territories, repertoire, and existing agreements. Confirm permissions for both compositions and sound recordings, including archive use, with the appropriate rights holders or qualified local adviser. Do not assume that a song’s availability on another service or a station’s broadcast licence automatically covers a YouTube livestream.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
- YouTube does not enable live streaming: Recheck channel verification, age eligibility, and live-stream restrictions; complete any current activation steps and allow for the platform’s activation period.
- The encoder will not connect: Check that the server URL and stream key match the selected YouTube stream, that the key has not been reset, and that the network permits the encoder’s outbound connection. If a key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- Live Control Room reports poor stream health or the feed drops: Compare the encoder bitrate with available upload capacity, restore the recommended bandwidth headroom, and check for network congestion or instability. Reduce output quality if the connection cannot sustain the selected settings. YouTube’s streaming tips cover reliable connectivity and bandwidth planning.
- Viewers hear no audio or see a blank visual: Check OBS’s selected audio source and meters, confirm the station audio is reaching the encoder, and verify that the visual source is active. Review the test stream from a separate device, not just the production monitor.
- The stream is interrupted after music begins: Check YouTube notifications and the matching segment, then review the underlying permissions. If the material is licensed, ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting; do not assume restarting the encoder resolves a rights claim.
- A long broadcast has no YouTube replay: Streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Use your local recording, and plan shorter sessions for future broadcasts when a YouTube archive is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want an encoder computer and home connection to stay on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
There is no computer at home that has to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. This is a YouTube-only service for uploaded video, so it is not a substitute for a live microphone or camera feed. For a Malayalam music station, clear the rights for the uploaded recordings, compositions, and any replay use before adding them.
