To keep gaming highlights playing continuously on YouTube, send a prerecorded playlist or video feed to YouTube Live through an encoder—or use a cloud service built for continuous prerecorded streams. For a do-it-yourself setup, prepare a rights-cleared playlist, enable live streaming, create a stream in YouTube Live Control Room, enter its stream key in an encoder such as OBS, then preview and monitor the broadcast. Long streams need a separate archive plan: YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Choose how the highlights will reach YouTube Live
The right setup depends on whether you already have video files, need to capture a console, or want a feed that runs without a computer at home. An encoder turns video into a format YouTube can receive; YouTube describes encoder streaming as suitable for gameplay and overlays, and says encoders can be software or standalone hardware. A capture card is not required for PC gameplay or every console workflow. Decide based on where the footage lives, how much automation and scene control you need, your computer and upload connection, and whether you need a complete local archive.
Set up a continuous highlights stream yourself
1. Check rights before assembling the playlist
Confirm that you have the rights needed for every game clip, music track, overlay, and third-party element in the broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility for necessary rights, including music licensing, on the creator. Permission to show gameplay does not necessarily clear a game’s soundtrack or other embedded third-party material. Keep records of permissions and licenses, and check the relevant publisher’s rules for the particular game.

2. Enable live streaming and check eligibility
Your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming tips and encoder instructions.
3. Prepare a feed and choose an encoder
Arrange your cleared highlights in the order you want them played and decide how the feed will repeat. With a local setup, use encoder software such as OBS to play or assemble the feed and send it to YouTube. If the source is a console, choose direct console streaming or route its output into a PC workflow; use a capture device only when that route requires one. Check compatibility with your console, computer, ports, resolution, frame rate, and HDR needs before purchasing equipment.

4. Create the event and connect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create or select a stream, then set its title, description, visibility, category, and other applicable options. Choose settings that accurately describe the continuous highlights broadcast.
- Create or select a stream key in Live Control Room, then enter that key in the encoder’s YouTube connection settings. The key lets the encoder send its feed to your channel; treat it like a password and reset it if it is exposed.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Use the preview to check picture and sound before making the event public or sharing it.

5. Test and monitor the broadcast
- Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm the event is accessible with the intended visibility.
- Listen for missing, distorted, or unexpectedly loud audio; check that the playlist advances and loops as intended.
- Monitor the local computer and network throughout a locally encoded stream. For an always-on broadcast, plan a routine for checking that the feed is still live and responding when it stops.
- If you need a local recording, verify that it is actually being saved and can be played back. YouTube recommends checking local archive files as part of stream preparation.
- When ending a broadcast, stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube, and confirm the final state in Live Control Room.
6. Make a separate plan for the archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the full broadcast matters, record locally or divide the schedule into shorter sessions; do not rely on a complete YouTube archive for an uninterrupted 24/7 stream. 7. Review monetization separately from streaming
A stream can be technically live without being eligible for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and discuss reused content, including clips and compilations. Its July 15, 2025 policy notice clarified the inauthentic-content policy and said the reused-content policy did not change. A compilation of existing highlights may raise review questions; no particular amount of commentary, editing, or looping guarantees approval.

Troubleshoot common continuous-stream problems
