You can run a continuous YouTube radio stream from a VPS by storing your audio or playlist on the server, sending it to YouTube Live with an encoder such as FFmpeg, and configuring a service supervisor to restart the encoder if it exits. The VPS keeps the process independent of your home computer, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting: you still need rights to the media, adequate sustained outbound capacity, monitoring, and a recovery plan.
How the setup works
The path is: source audio or playlist → encoder process on a VPS → YouTube Live ingest → viewers. An encoder reads your media and sends a live feed to the YouTube endpoint using the stream key from Live Control Room. For a radio-style broadcast, this can be audio-led, or include a still image or other video if your chosen setup supplies one.
A VPS in India is a server-location choice, not a guarantee of a particular route, latency, capacity, or reliability to YouTube. YouTube’s channel and encoder requirements apply; the available guidance does not establish an India-specific streaming rule or identify a best Indian VPS provider.
Before you start: channel, rights and server
Enable YouTube live streaming
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube requires streamers to be at least 16. First-time encoder live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before you plan to launch. See YouTube’s eligibility requirements and encoder setup instructions.

Confirm music and other content rights
Being able to play a track does not mean you can rebroadcast it. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the content provider to hold necessary rights for use of the live content on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights, and to satisfy territory requirements. The licenses needed depend on the catalog, use, territories, and whether you also need rights for replay or an archive. YouTube’s terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the YouTube live-stream terms and establish rights for your actual catalog and audience before streaming.
Choose a VPS for the workload, not just its location
Before paying, check the provider’s current India-region availability, sustained outbound transfer terms, CPU allocation, support, backup options, and service terms. A process that passes through already-encoded media without changing it has different CPU demands from one that encodes, resizes, or changes frame rate. These are workload distinctions, not a benchmark for any specific VPS. No provider’s current India capacity, price, or performance is established here, so test your actual files and stream from the plan you intend to use.
Set up the YouTube stream and protect its key

In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and retrieve the stream URL and stream key using YouTube’s encoder setup process.

Configure the encoder on the VPS to send to YouTube’s provided endpoint. Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it for encrypted transport. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

Treat the stream key as a password. Store it in a protected configuration mechanism available only to the service account that needs it. Avoid putting it in public screenshots, shared command histories, or logs. YouTube explains stream key settings.

Place the audio files or playlist where the encoder process can read them. Confirm file permissions and paths under the account that will run the unattended service, not only under your interactive login.
Choose a stream format and bitrate
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you actually plan to send. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds. Its recommended bitrate changes with codec, resolution, and frame rate.
For H.264, YouTube’s published recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. For stereo audio, its recommended bitrate is 128 Kbps. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not minimum VPS specifications or guarantees of viewer quality. For an audio-led stream, select the audio settings appropriate to the feed and any video component rather than assuming a video bitrate is required for audio alone.

- CBR: configure constant bitrate in the encoder, as YouTube’s encoder guidance requires.
- Keyframes: target two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Transport: choose RTMPS when the supplied endpoint supports it.
- Capacity: verify that the VPS can sustain the full outgoing bitrate, with headroom for network variation. A provider’s advertised transfer allowance alone does not establish sustained throughput.
Run the encoder continuously and recover from failures
Configure your encoder to read the source media or playlist and send the output to YouTube’s endpoint with the protected stream key. A recent VPS tutorial describes a looping FFmpeg pattern; it is one possible implementation, not official YouTube guidance or a tested guarantee. Commands and options depend on your operating system, FFmpeg build, media format, and whether you are remuxing or re-encoding, so validate them against your environment rather than copying a command blindly.
For unattended operation, use an operating-system service supervisor or equivalent restart strategy to bring the encoder back after a process failure or server reboot. Inspect logs after a restart: automatic process restart alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a valid feed, the source is still readable, or audio is playing. Keep a way to check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and review provider and system alerts where available. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health in its encoder guidance and live-stream tips.
Test before making it public

Start with a private or unlisted test if that suits your channel and use case.

Confirm the feed appears in YouTube’s preview, audio is audible and correctly leveled, and any video component displays as intended.

Check YouTube’s stream-health status and warnings while the VPS is sending data.

Restart the encoder or VPS during a controlled test. Confirm the service supervisor starts the process again and that the feed returns; check the logs and YouTube preview rather than assuming a running process means a healthy stream.

Test the playlist transition and any looping behavior with your actual media. Check for gaps, unintended silence, or a process that exits at the end of a file.
Decide between one long stream and shorter sessions
A single broadcast is simpler for continuity, but YouTube’s archive and DVR behavior impose an important trade-off. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If preserving a replay matters, keep a separate local recording backup and consult YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance. Shorter scheduled sessions may suit some channels, but YouTube does not require session splitting, and splitting does not guarantee an archive.

Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a live stream: check channel verification, eligibility, restrictions, and whether first-time live activation is still pending. Activation can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: verify the endpoint, stream key, network access, and that the key belongs to the intended stream. Keep the key private when checking configuration or logs.
- Stream health reports unstable or insufficient input: compare the actual outgoing bitrate and format with YouTube’s encoder guidance, then check sustained VPS outbound capacity and network behavior. Do not infer stream capacity solely from a monthly transfer allowance.
- The audio stops or the playlist ends: check source paths and permissions under the service account, playlist order, loop settings, and encoder logs. Test end-of-file behavior before relying on unattended operation.
- The encoder exits and stays down: inspect the service supervisor’s restart policy and logs, then verify that it can read the media and access the network after restart. A supervisor cannot fix a bad stream key or missing source file.
- You need a replay but no archive appears: a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Preserve a separate recording if replay is important; do not assume a long live broadcast will become a complete archive.
- A track triggers a rights issue or restriction: pause or change the content only in a way consistent with your licenses and YouTube’s terms. Confirm the rights and territory scope for every track; technical access to a file is not a license to rebroadcast it.
Costs and operating trade-offs
Your recurring costs depend on the VPS provider and plan, storage and transfer terms, and whether you need backups or paid media rights. No current India VPS price or provider comparison is established here. Compare total monthly cost and terms against the stream’s real encoding workload and required archive strategy. Remuxing pre-encoded material can reduce the need for CPU-intensive re-encoding, but limits what you can change; re-encoding offers more control over output format and resolution while requiring the VPS to perform that work.
