To restart a YouTube gaming broadcast after a disconnect, enable Auto-start in YouTube Studio and enable reconnect or retry in your encoder, if it offers that option. These settings do different jobs: YouTube Auto-start begins the broadcast when it receives a feed; the encoder must reconnect and send that feed. If the encoder app crashes or exits, neither setting alone will relaunch it.
Choose the fix for the kind of interruption

YouTube does not establish one universal reconnect setting or behavior for every third-party encoder. Check the documentation for the encoder you actually use, then test the complete recovery path before relying on it.
Enable YouTube Auto-start and check the encoder connection
- Open the stream in YouTube Studio. Go to YouTube Studio, select Go Live, then choose an existing stream or create one.
- Turn on Auto-start. Find it in the stream settings and enable it. YouTube says that when Auto-start and Auto-stop are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder. Auto-start means YouTube can begin the broadcast when the encoder sends a feed; it is not an instruction to relaunch the encoder software.
- Verify the encoder’s server URL and stream key. In your encoder’s YouTube connection settings, confirm that it uses the URL and key for the intended stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover entering both. If the encoder reports a startup error, check whether the key is correct or needs refreshing, then update it in the encoder. Keep the key private.
- Enable reconnect or retry in the encoder, if available. Look in its streaming or connection settings and confirm what conditions trigger a retry. The option’s name and behavior vary by encoder; YouTube’s guidance does not define a shared third-party setting.
- Test privately or unlisted. Start a test stream and confirm the broadcast starts when the encoder sends its feed. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health and messages before and during a live stream. See its live streaming tips.
If your software signs in directly instead of using a stream key and it will not connect, YouTube directs you to the software provider for help. Reusing stream settings can also carry over choices such as Auto-start, so check the setting on the stream you plan to use rather than assuming it is enabled.
Reduce disconnects and verify recovery
- Match stream quality to your connection. Test upload speed and choose a quality the connection can sustain. YouTube recommends these steps for reliability; its encoder settings guidance also covers stream health.
- Test representative gameplay. Include typical motion and audio, then watch the stream health indicators and messages. A static menu or short connection check may not expose problems that appear during a real session.
- Test the failure you need to recover from. A brief loss of the incoming feed while the encoder stays running is different from an encoder process exit. Verify separately that reconnect works for the first case and that any relaunch or backup arrangement handles the second.
- For a backup encoder, test failover deliberately. YouTube describes stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable to check whether playback rolls over to the backup. This tests a configured backup path, not automatic restart by a lone encoder.
- Treat hardware purchases as diagnosis-specific. A wired network connection may be worth testing if the connection is unstable, but an Ethernet cable is not a restart mechanism. A UPS is relevant only when power loss is the cause; it does not relaunch streaming software.
Troubleshoot when the stream does not come back

Exact recovery time and whether the same live event or watch page continues after every failure are not established as universal guarantees. Verify those outcomes with your encoder and stream setup.
