First confirm that the station and rights holders permit retransmission to YouTube, including any archiving or monetization; a publicly playable station URL is not permission to rebroadcast it.
Before you start: check rights and access
Get permission from the station and relevant rights holders before streaming. Confirm that permission covers the music and recordings, the territories where viewers may watch, the planned duration, YouTube distribution, and any archive or monetization. YouTube’s live terms place responsibility on the provider to hold the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation, including music rights, and contemplate archived content. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
YouTube’s terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” A station’s Indian location, a working player, or successful playback in FFmpeg does not establish that a particular broadcast is authorized in India or elsewhere. Confirm territorial coverage directly with the station and rights holders; this is a practical permissions check, not legal advice.
- A station-approved still image or other visual asset you have rights to use.
- A direct, FFmpeg-readable audio-stream URL and any provider-approved access details.
- An eligible YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours; see YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- An installed FFmpeg build that supports the input format and the chosen video encoder.
Find and test the station’s actual audio stream
A station website or player URL may be a web page rather than the media endpoint. It may instead use HLS, redirects, authentication, or another delivery method. Ask the station for its approved stream URL and access method. Test that URL with your installed FFmpeg before configuring YouTube, and confirm that FFmpeg can identify a demuxable audio stream and its format. Do not work around access controls or repeatedly reconnect if the provider disallows it.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol supports reconnect controls for network errors, streamed input, end-of-file, and selected HTTP errors, but not every endpoint accepts repeated connections or works without required headers or authentication. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and the help for your installed build.
Enable YouTube Live and get the stream credentials
- Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that it meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements. If this is the channel’s first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a live stream and select the encoder workflow. Follow the current interface to obtain the stream’s server URL and stream key. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, place it in a public script repository, or share a command containing it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Live Control Room.
Use the protocol and server URL YouTube provides for that stream. Do not guess or hard-code an ingest endpoint.

Prepare the image and run an FFmpeg relay
The following is a command pattern, not a tested command for a particular station. Replace every placeholder, use an authorized image, and check option and encoder support in your local FFmpeg build. It assumes input 0 is a directly readable audio stream and input 1 is a still image. The image supplies the video track required by this image-based approach; audio alone is not enough for this command pattern.
ffmpeg
-reconnect 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1 -reconnect_streamed 1
-reconnect_on_network_error 1 -reconnect_on_http_error 4xx,5xx
-reconnect_delay_max 30
-i 'https://STATION-AUDIO-STREAM-URL'
-loop 1 -framerate 30 -i 'station-artwork.jpg'
-map 1:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -tune stillimage -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE-INGEST-URL/STREAM-KEY'
Input-specific reconnect options precede the station input so they apply to it. Replace the final destination with the server URL and key from Live Control Room, using the exact format YouTube supplies. If your build does not include libx264, choose a supported encoder compatible with YouTube’s guidance. If the input is not a direct audio URL, determine the correct approved endpoint and adapt the input rather than assuming this command will read the station’s web player.

Match YouTube’s encoder guidance and test the broadcast
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264 as a video codec option, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding; it recommends RTMPS. For stereo audio, its recommendation is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. The command uses AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as an illustrative audio configuration. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular station endpoint or FFmpeg build will work. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, and validate the actual stream in Live Control Room.
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream if available for your setup.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview and check that both video and audio arrive. Confirm that the still image is the intended asset and that audio is audible and not distorted or silent.
- Begin the public broadcast only after verifying the preview and permission scope.
- Keep monitoring the preview and live player, especially after a source interruption or encoder restart.
Plan bandwidth and recovery
YouTube advises that available upload capacity exceed the total stream bitrate and recommends 20% headroom. Leave capacity for other traffic on the connection, and monitor whether the host can sustain the outgoing stream. YouTube also recommends testing and continuous monitoring; see its streaming tips.

The reconnect flags in the example can help FFmpeg retry a station input after selected failures, including an end-of-file condition useful for endless streams. They do not guarantee uninterrupted playback. A station may reject repeated connections, change its endpoint, or require approved headers or authentication. YouTube may also stop receiving the encoder output. Keep an operator able to inspect logs, verify the station source and network, and restart or correct the process when automated retries do not recover it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg cannot open the station URL: Check whether it is a player page rather than a direct media endpoint, whether it redirects, and whether the station requires an approved authentication method. Ask the station for its direct stream details.
- Audio plays locally but YouTube has no video: The command requires a still-image video input. Check that the image file exists and that the video mapping is present.
- FFmpeg reports an unknown option or encoder: Options and encoders depend on the installed build. Consult local FFmpeg help; if
libx264is unavailable, select a supported compatible video encoder. - YouTube does not connect: Re-copy the server URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream, verify the supplied protocol, and keep the key private. Do not substitute a guessed destination.
- The broadcast starts but drops or stutters: Check the station endpoint, FFmpeg output and network capacity. Ensure upload capacity exceeds total stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; reconnect settings can help but are not a continuity guarantee.
- The stream is blocked, claimed, or unsuitable for archiving: Stop and resolve rights with the station and relevant rights holders. Technical success does not grant retransmission, territorial, archive, or monetization rights.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded recordings live around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than taking a live camera feed, and it does not remove the need to hold broadcast rights for the content.
