How to Make a Non-Stop Kirtan Radio Stream on YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep kirtan playing continuously on YouTube, send an authorized audio playlist and a visual—such as a still devotional image—to YouTube Live through an encoder. YouTube provides the live-stream workflow, but a genuinely unattended, non-stop broadcast also needs a reliable way to feed the playlist, recover from failures, and monitor the stream. Most importantly, you must have the necessary rights to stream both the music and the specific recordings.

Before you start: check channel access and music rights

Make sure the channel can livestream

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility and enable livestreaming well before your intended launch. See YouTube’s livestreaming setup guidance.

Clear the music before building the stream

You need the necessary rights for the music you broadcast. Treat the composition and the particular sound recording as separate things to check: a traditional or devotional song may still have a protected arrangement, performance, or recording. A song being religious, old, or freely available to watch on YouTube does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it.

Ask the relevant rights owners for written permission covering YouTube livestreaming and, if you plan to leave a replay available, the archive as well. Ask whether the channel must be allowlisted in Content ID. YouTube warns that even licensed material can be interrupted if the channel is not on the owner’s allowlist. Its live-stream copyright guidance explains how matching content can trigger a warning, a placeholder, temporary interruption, or termination.

YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary worldwide rights for Live Content, including music licensing rights. Those platform terms are not legal advice about which licenses apply to a particular recording or country.

Choose how the audio and visual will reach YouTube

For a produced broadcast, YouTube’s encoder workflow can send a feed containing external audio and video. For an audio-first kirtan radio stream, that could be an authorized prerecorded mix paired with a still image or a simple looping visual. A microphone is only needed if you are capturing singers or instruments live; it is not required for a prepared prerecorded mix.

A one-time encoder setup does not, by itself, make a broadcast non-stop. Plan how the playlist will continue, who will check the feed, and what will happen after a power, network, or encoder failure. YouTube’s guidance explains how to send and monitor a live feed, but does not certify a particular unattended playlist or restart system, or promise uninterrupted operation.

Set up the YouTube livestream with an encoder

  1. Enable livestreaming. In YouTube Studio, check the channel’s livestream eligibility and complete any verification or activation steps. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  2. Create the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Choose the stream’s audience and other details carefully, including whether you intend to keep a replay.
  3. Prepare the program. Load only audio you are authorized to stream into your playlist or playback source. Add the still image or visual in the encoder. If you are capturing live performers, connect and test the audio equipment; otherwise, a microphone is unnecessary.
  4. Connect the encoder. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream in Live Control Room into the corresponding encoder fields. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s address/password for sending the feed. Keep it private; reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
  5. Configure the outgoing feed. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s compatible settings include H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, no longer than four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported. Select a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain rather than choosing the highest possible setting. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates.
  6. Preview and test. Start sending the feed and check the Live Control Room preview before going live. Test with audio and movement representative of the actual program. Confirm that the image, sound, and playlist transitions behave as expected.
  7. Start and monitor. Go live from the encoder or Live Control Room as applicable to your setup. Watch stream health and messages while the broadcast is running, and verify that viewers can access it.

Choose a bitrate your connection can hold

YouTube publishes different bitrate ranges for different resolutions. Use its current table rather than treating one bitrate as right for every setup: the stream’s total bitrate must fit within the available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom. In other words, do not plan to use all of your measured upload capacity for the broadcast. Run a representative test on the connection you will actually use, and reduce the stream bitrate or resolution if the feed is unstable. YouTube’s encoder settings page provides the resolution-specific recommendations, while its network, encoder, and stream-health guidance covers bandwidth and monitoring.

Plan for continuity, not just a successful launch

A non-stop broadcast depends on more than pressing “Go live.” Decide in advance how the playlist will continue and how someone will respond if the stream stops. YouTube advises testing the encoder, previewing in Live Control Room, monitoring stream health, and testing backup failover if you have configured it. Its documentation does not establish that any specific encoder or automation method will run unattended without interruption.

  • Decide who is responsible for monitoring the broadcast and responding to warnings.
  • Test the playlist for gaps, unintended silence, and transitions before scheduling a long stream.
  • Plan what happens after a power or internet outage, encoder crash, or YouTube disconnect.
  • If you configure backup failover, test that it works before relying on it.
  • Confirm whether your music permission covers an archived replay as well as the live broadcast.

Why YouTube may interrupt a kirtan livestream

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including other live broadcasts. If it detects a match, it may show a placeholder and warn the streamer; if the content remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. Permission from a rights owner does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted. Resolve rights and allowlisting questions with the relevant owner before going live; do not assume an interruption means the underlying music is automatically cleared or uncleared.
