To reduce CPU use in an OBS relaxation loop, start with one local Media Source with Loop enabled, simplify the scene, and test a compatible hardware encoder if your computer offers one. If needed, reduce output resolution or frame rate—but check the stream’s smoothness and detail after each change. There is no documented CPU-saving percentage for this setup, and the best settings depend on your computer, video file, and output target.
First, identify what is using resources
High CPU use does not by itself show whether encoding is the problem. OBS also uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes; its performance guide explains that “OBS needs GPU time and resources because it has to composite and render a scene.” A busy or overloaded scene can therefore be a separate issue from CPU encoding. Before changing settings, note CPU use and check whether OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload. Then make one change at a time and compare the same scene, video, and output settings. That makes it easier to see what helped without confusing a CPU change with a different bottleneck.
Set up a simple looping video source
- Add a Media Source: In your relaxation scene, add a local video through Sources → + → Media Source. Choose the file you want to play.
- Enable Loop: Open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. OBS will replay the file when playback completes. The OBS Media Sources guide describes the source options.
- Keep the scene lean: Remove sources that do not appear in the finished stream. Reduce demanding filters and browser overlays if you do not need them. OBS notes that sources can use resources even when they are not visible, so hiding an unnecessary source may not be enough.
- Use appropriately sized media: If the video is much larger than the resolution at which it appears, consider using a source closer to the output size. The actual impact varies by file and machine; compare performance and image quality rather than assuming a particular saving.
Media Source properties also include hardware decoding on systems and formats that support it. Try enabling it only as a test: availability and effect depend on the media file and hardware, and it is not a guaranteed CPU reduction. Close file when inactive can release memory when a source is hidden, but it may need to reload when shown again; it is not a general CPU fix for a loop that remains visible.

Try a compatible hardware encoder
A hardware encoder can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU or processor. In OBS, open Settings → Output and inspect the encoder options for the selected output mode. If a compatible hardware encoder is available, compare it with your current encoder using the same scene and output settings.
Which options appear depends on the operating system and hardware. OBS lists NVENC and AMD AMF on Windows and Linux, Intel Quick Sync on Windows and Linux, and VideoToolbox on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs; the cited OBS guide qualifies that streaming with VideoToolbox on Intel Macs is unsupported. Check the OBS hardware encoding guide and the options in your current OBS installation before choosing. A hardware option is not automatically the best choice for every computer or quality target.

Adjust resolution or frame rate only if necessary
If the scene and encoder are not enough, lower output resolution or frame rate as a tradeoff. Lower resolution can reduce encoder load; frame rate affects rendering and encoding, and 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps. For a mostly static relaxation video, test whether 30 fps looks acceptable before changing it. Lower resolution can reduce visible detail, while lower frame rate can make motion less smooth.
Use Settings → Video to review the base (canvas) and output (scaled) resolutions and frame rate, then change only the setting you intend to test. Test changes before going live
- Save your current settings or note them so you can revert.
- Make one change, such as simplifying the scene or switching the encoder.
- Run a test recording or test stream with the loop playing. OBS recommends testing settings before a real stream in its Quick Start Guide.
- Check CPU use, OBS’s rendering or encoding indicators, stream smoothness, and picture quality.
- Keep the change only if it improves the problem without an unacceptable quality tradeoff. Repeat for the next setting if needed.
OBS’s cited documentation does not publish a benchmark for CPU savings from this exact relaxation-loop setup. Results vary with OBS version, operating system, media format, encoder, output target, and scene.
Common problems and what to try
- CPU remains high after switching encoders: Check whether the scene is complex or whether the problem is rendering rather than encoding. Remove unneeded sources, browser overlays, and demanding filters, then test again.
- Hardware decoding makes no difference or causes trouble: Its availability and effect depend on the file and machine. Compare with the option off; keep the setting that behaves reliably.
- The stream looks less detailed or motion looks choppy: Restore the previous resolution or frame rate, or test a smaller adjustment. The lower workload comes with a possible quality cost.
- The source reloads after being hidden: Review the Media Source’s close-when-inactive setting. Closing it while inactive can release memory but may introduce a reload delay when it becomes active again.
- OBS still struggles after simplifying and testing: Check the OBS performance indicators and confirm the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity together. System requirements depend on that combination, not CPU use alone.
