How to Schedule a 24/7 Radio Livestream on YouTube

Scheduling creates the YouTube event page, but an encoder must send the continuous radio feed. Here’s how to set up, test, and monitor it.

To schedule a 24/7 radio livestream on YouTube, create a scheduled event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then connect an encoder that continuously sends your radio audio (and any video) to YouTube. Scheduling creates the event and its watch page; it does not generate or keep the live signal running.

Decide how the station should appear on YouTube

YouTube treats the scheduled broadcast and the incoming stream as separate resources. The broadcast is the event and watch page; the stream is the feed sent by your encoder. A broadcast is bound to a stream, and YouTube documents reusing a stream for multiple broadcasts—including a continuous 24/7 feed alongside a separate event such as an interview. Google’s LiveBroadcasts documentation describes that arrangement.

Choose the structure that fits your programming:

  • One continuous station page: Keep a single feed running if listeners should have one persistent place to tune in.
  • Separate scheduled programs: Create distinct event pages when each show needs its own title, scheduled time, promotion, or replay.
  • Continuous feed plus special events: Keep the station stream and create separate broadcasts for occasions such as interviews. YouTube’s documentation supports this pattern, but does not prescribe one structure for every station.

Recurring scheduled events are not the same as an uninterrupted signal. If you want one continuous public page, plan for a continuous encoder connection and someone or something to monitor it.

Schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio

  1. Check channel readiness and open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then choose the encoder workflow. YouTube’s guide to creating and scheduling a live stream covers the Studio process. Confirm that live streaming is available for your channel before planning the event.
  2. Create the event. Enter a title, scheduled start time, and privacy setting. The Studio workflow presents these choices; the API documentation lists title, scheduled start time, and privacy status among the fields used to create a scheduled broadcast. See liveBroadcasts.insert.
  3. Choose stream behavior. Review the event’s auto-start, auto-stop, latency, and DVR controls. Auto-start and auto-stop govern how YouTube handles the broadcast; neither supplies an encoder feed. DVR lets viewers pause and rewind while the stream is available. For a radio feed without live interaction, stable playback is generally more important than targeting the lowest latency: YouTube notes that low latency can affect buffering and smoothness, and may matter less when the creator is not interacting with viewers. Consult the current YouTube live settings before choosing.
  4. Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube says stream keys are like a password and address. Do not publish or share it; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Configure and test the radio encoder

Your encoder must provide the actual program continuously. That can be a live audio source or a prepared playlist, depending on your setup. YouTube’s live settings guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio and says incoming streams are transcoded for viewer devices. It does not establish a radio-specific bitrate, so use the current YouTube encoding settings rather than relying on an invented universal bitrate prescription.

  1. Set the encoder’s destination to YouTube, then paste the server URL and stream key from the scheduled event.
  2. Set audio and video parameters supported by your encoder and source. Follow YouTube’s current encoding guidance for the selected format; do not assume a setting suitable for one audio source or network is suitable for another.
  3. Run a private test before going public. The API lifecycle guide says a private test phase requires monitor-stream preview enabled and auto-start disabled. In Studio, check the incoming preview and stream health, and verify the event is accessible as intended. The broadcast lifecycle guide explains testing and state transitions; YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend previewing and monitoring audio and video.
  4. Start the encoder first and wait for the feed preview or health indication in Live Control Room. Then start the scheduled broadcast, or let the selected auto-start behavior do so. Confirm playback from the channel or event watch page, not only from the encoder’s local preview.

For a station that must stay online around the clock, the encoder needs a continuous source, a dependable connection, and operational monitoring. A computer running an encoder is one possible setup; YouTube’s cited guidance specifies no particular computer model or minimum hardware.

Plan for archives, monetization, and music rights

Replays and archives

Do not assume a single 24/7 transmission will produce a complete automatic replay. YouTube Help guidance verified on October 3, 2026 says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. If a complete replay matters, plan separate recording or shorter broadcast segments and check YouTube’s current archive guidance before relying on a particular behavior.

Ads and monetization

YouTube provides ad and mid-roll controls, but automated ads require channel eligibility for monetization. A 24/7 radio stream is not automatically eligible and is not guaranteed to serve ads. Check the current monetization controls and your channel’s eligibility in YouTube Studio.

Copyright and reused content

Only stream audio and visuals you have the rights to use on YouTube. A track being available to listen to elsewhere, or having permission to play it in a venue, does not by itself establish that you can rebroadcast it. Review rights for every recording, composition, artwork, and other material in the feed, and keep permission records. YouTube may apply copyright controls to live streams; review its copyright guidance and channel monetization policies, including reused-content rules, before building a station around recordings you did not create.

Studio scheduling or API automation?

Approach Best fit What it involves
YouTube Studio Manual setup by a creator or station operator Schedule the event in Live Control Room, copy the connection details, and start the encoder.
YouTube Live Streaming API Developers automating repeatable event workflows Create broadcasts and stream resources, bind them, and manage broadcast states such as testing, live, and completed. See the Live Streaming API and its lifecycle guide.

Studio is the direct path for a manually scheduled broadcast. The API adds repeatability and integration options, but requires managing the separate resources and their lifecycle; it is not a shortcut around the need to send a live feed.

Troubleshoot a scheduled radio stream

  • The watch page exists, but playback is offline: Scheduling made the event, but no usable feed is reaching it. Start the encoder, check its destination URL and key, and confirm that the broadcast is bound to the intended stream.
  • The encoder is sending, but Studio shows no preview: Recheck the server URL and stream key, then inspect the encoder’s connection status and the event’s stream health. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
  • The event does not start when the encoder connects: Check the auto-start setting and the broadcast’s current state. Auto-start is a control, not a replacement for a running encoder; start the event manually if that is how it is configured.
  • Listeners report buffering or choppy playback: Review stream health and the encoder’s outgoing connection. If audience interaction is not central to the radio format, avoid choosing a lower-latency mode without a need for it; YouTube notes the trade-off with buffering and smoothness.
  • The replay is missing or incomplete: Check the stream duration and current archive guidance. YouTube’s cited Help information covers automatic archiving for streams shorter than 12 hours, not a complete archive of one longer 24/7 session.
  • A song is claimed, blocked, or interrupted: Check the rights for that recording and composition and review YouTube’s copyright notices. Replace or remove material you are not authorized to broadcast; do not assume a radio format exempts a stream from copyright enforcement.
