YouTube’s general live-encoder guidance recommends those stereo settings; it does not establish a special bitrate optimized for sleep sounds.
Set the audio bitrate in FFmpeg
Use -b:a to set audio bitrate. In FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder, specifying a bitrate activates constant-bitrate mode. The k suffix expresses kilobits per second, so -b:a 128k sets the audio stream to 128 Kbps. Put the audio options with the output they configure.

-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"This is an illustrative output fragment, not a universal command: it assumes the input already has the intended audio and that video settings suit your source and stream. Replace the input, video settings, ingest URL, and key with your own. Keep the stream key private. The 4500k video bitrate is only an example; YouTube’s video recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s live encoder settings and FFmpeg’s codec documentation explain the relevant settings.
Choose the right settings for the audio you are sending

These are YouTube’s general live-encoder recommendations, not sleep-sounds-specific results. Stereo is the relevant recommendation for a typical stereo ambience stream. A higher bitrate cannot restore detail missing from the source, and the available guidance does not establish that 128 Kbps will audibly improve every sleep-sounds recording. YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS live streams and transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance if its recommendations may have changed since this article was published.

Handle a still image or separate audio file deliberately
If the sleep audio is in a separate file and the video is a still image, the example command above is not a complete still-image setup. Supply both inputs, create or loop the video input as needed, and map the intended streams explicitly. For example, a command using -map or complex filters should be checked to ensure its final output includes the intended audio stream; otherwise YouTube may receive video without sound. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation for input, mapping, and output syntax.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
YouTube’s setup guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and movement representative of the intended stream, then monitor stream health and messages in Live Control Room. YouTube’s setup instructions describe this check, and its Live Streaming API documentation identifies codec, bitrate, and sample-rate problems among stream-health diagnostics.

- Check FFmpeg’s output information to confirm the audio codec, sample rate, and channel count are what you intended.
- Confirm YouTube is receiving audio and that Live Control Room reports healthy ingest.
- Listen to the live output for clipping, silence, or an unexpected channel mix.
For a stream whose purpose is audible ambience, make sure the input actually contains that sound. A visually static scene is not a reason to lower the audio bitrate, and a silence-input workaround defeats the purpose of a sleep-sounds stream.
Troubleshoot common audio problems
