To run Indian music continuously, you need three things: recordings and compositions you have permission to stream, playlist automation that keeps supplying tracks, and a delivery destination such as an Icecast or Shoutcast server or YouTube Live. A practical audio-only setup is rights-cleared files → Liquidsoap → Icecast/Shoutcast → a web player. A YouTube stream adds a video layer and YouTube’s live-content checks. Settle the rights for the exact recordings, works, territories and platforms before you start: playlist software and a platform’s music catalog do not grant rebroadcast permission.
1. Clear the music rights before building the stream
Indian music can involve distinct rights in the sound recording and in the underlying musical and literary works, including lyrics. Permission for one component does not automatically clear the others. Before scheduling a track, establish who controls each relevant right and obtain written permission that covers your intended continuous online use.
Record the terms for every track
Maintain a rights record alongside your audio library. For each recording, note the recording owner or administrator, the composition and lyric rights holders or administrators, the permission or license, its term and territories, the permitted platform, attribution requirements, reporting obligations, and any instructions for Content ID allowlisting. Keep copies of the agreements and correspondence so you can verify a track’s status when the playlist changes.
The Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) describes its role in relation to musical and literary works in the repertoire it represents; it does not clear sound recordings it does not own or administer. Its licensing pages list streaming categories, but you must confirm that a proposed use and catalog fall within the relevant permission. IPRS reported ₹742.1 crore in total collections and ₹602.4 crore in digital streaming income for FY 2024–25. Those are organization-wide figures, not a forecast of an individual station’s revenue or proof that a particular song is licensed.

Do not assume a radio or listening license covers internet rebroadcast
PPL India describes its radio broadcast license as applying to terrestrial stations. That description does not establish that the license covers an independent internet-only stream, YouTube, or a website player. PPL advertises a library of more than 1.04 crore songs across multiple Indian languages, but a catalog listing is not blanket online permission. Treat it as a place to check rights, and ask the relevant rights holders or administrators to confirm the exact online use in writing.
Buying a song or subscribing to a service for personal listening does not, by itself, establish permission to publicly rebroadcast it. The relevant question is whether your written grant covers the recording and works, the continuous online stream, the particular destination, your territories, monetization if any, and whether you may retain or replay archived copies.
2. Choose the destination and understand the three-part setup
For an audio-only station, the basic chain is:
Rights-cleared audio files or playlist → Liquidsoap playlist automation and fallback → Icecast or Shoutcast → compatible player or website
Liquidsoap can select tracks from playlists, shuffle or play them in order, reload a changing playlist, and send audio to Icecast or Shoutcast. The listening player is the audience-facing endpoint; the automation process and audio server are the parts that keep the source playing and deliver it.

Audio server versus video platform
- Self-hosted audio delivery: An Icecast or Shoutcast server can provide a stream URL for a website or compatible player. You manage the server, monitoring, connectivity and audience capacity.
- YouTube Live: Adds a video feed and platform discovery, but also makes the channel dependent on YouTube’s account, live-stream rules and music enforcement. Liquidsoap’s current site describes taking a live video feed, such as RTMP from OBS, and sending output to YouTube Live; that technical capability is not a rights clearance or a guarantee that YouTube will accept the stream uninterrupted.
Decide based on whether you need audio only or video, your expected audience, encoding load, operational skills, bandwidth, monetization model, archive behavior, territory coverage and rights-holder requirements. The available documentation does not establish a universal hardware requirement, bitrate, capacity estimate or cheapest option; those depend on the deployment and audience.
3. Build a playlist that rotates while the station runs
Prepare a clean, rights-cleared library
- Store only files you have cleared for the intended use, and associate each file with its rights record. Remove or quarantine tracks whose permission has expired or whose platform or territory terms do not match the stream.
- Make a playlist from the approved files. Keep a backup copy of the playlist and configuration so an accidental edit or server failure does not erase the station’s schedule.
- Choose the rotation deliberately. A shuffled playlist changes the sequence, but depending on configuration it can repeat tracks. Playing a defined list in order and looping it makes the cycle more predictable. If you need to avoid frequent repeats, test the chosen configuration against the size and length of your catalog rather than assuming shuffle guarantees variety.
Configure Liquidsoap to load and refresh the playlist
Liquidsoap’s documentation describes playlist sources, ordered playback, shuffling, reload settings and outputs to Icecast or Shoutcast. Its cookbook includes an example that shuffles a remote list and reloads it every ten minutes, allowing an operator to update the list while playback continues. That interval is an example, not a universal requirement. Check the syntax and behavior against the Liquidsoap version you install: the documented examples span stable and 2.3.3 documentation.
Test changes with a small approved playlist before relying on them for a continuous station. Confirm that the process reads the intended list, that new entries appear after a reload, that tracks play in the intended order or randomized mode, and that the audio server receives a usable signal. Do not deploy a configuration solely because a snippet for another Liquidsoap version looks similar.
4. Keep playback alive when a playlist item fails
A 24/7 design needs a path for missing, invalid or unavailable playlist content. Liquidsoap’s quickstart demonstrates using a safe fallback source; configure a known-good fallback item or alternate playlist so a broken primary source does not leave the output silent. Test the fallback by temporarily making the primary input unavailable in a controlled environment.

Add operational safeguards
- Supervise the Liquidsoap and audio-server processes and configure a tested restart procedure.
- Monitor logs and set alerts for process failures, disconnected outputs and prolonged silence.
- Keep backups of the playlist, configuration and rights records, and test that you can restore them.
- Check the station after playlist updates and after restarts; automation does not remove the need to verify that audio is reaching the destination.
Liquidsoap’s fallback example is a software pattern, not a certification that a particular station will achieve 24/7 uptime. Continuity depends on the complete deployment, including the host, network, server and monitoring.
5. Confirm the destination’s music rules
For YouTube Live
YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can lead to a placeholder, interruption or termination. It also notes that licensed content may still be interrupted if the relevant rights owner has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID. Ask each relevant rights holder whether allowlisting is required and how to arrange it before you go live.
Allowlisting is a platform-side mechanism for licensed content, not a substitute for obtaining permission. Likewise, the presence of a track in a platform catalog does not prove that your continuous stream, territories, monetization or archived copies are authorized.
For a website or other online player
Ask rights holders or administrators to confirm the scope in writing for the specific player or service, territories, term, monetization and any archive or replay copies. IPRS’s and PPL India’s descriptions distinguish the scopes of their roles and licenses; neither description alone determines whether your particular catalog and proposed online stream are cleared.

6. Test the complete path before announcing the station
- Verify permissions: Check every scheduled recording and underlying work against your rights records and confirm any required attribution, reporting or allowlisting.
- Test rotation: Run the playlist long enough to observe the selected order, reload behavior and track transitions. Replace invalid paths or files before launch.
- Test fallback: Simulate an unavailable playlist source and verify that the approved fallback reaches the output.
- Test delivery: Listen through the same player or destination your audience will use. For YouTube, verify the live feed and check for platform interruptions; for self-hosted audio, verify the stream URL from an external connection.
- Test recovery: Exercise your restart and restore steps, and confirm that logs and alerts give enough information to identify a failure.
7. Troubleshoot common failures
The playlist is silent or a track is skipped
Check that the file exists at the listed path, is readable by the streaming process and is a valid audio input for your setup. Check Liquidsoap logs for a failed source or decode, then replace the bad entry or point it to a verified file. Confirm that the fallback is configured and tested rather than assuming an empty or invalid playlist will recover automatically.
Playlist edits do not appear
Confirm that you edited the list Liquidsoap actually reads, then check its configured reload behavior and logs. A remote-list example in Liquidsoap’s cookbook reloads every ten minutes, but your configuration may differ. Validate syntax for the installed version and use the documented reload settings for that version.
The audio server stops receiving the source
Check whether Liquidsoap is still running, whether its output connection to Icecast or Shoutcast is active, and whether the server is reachable. Review both processes’ logs, restore the connection or restart the failed process using your tested procedure, then verify the stream from a listener’s perspective.
YouTube interrupts or replaces the live stream
Review YouTube’s live-stream notice and identify the matched material. Confirm that the recording and composition permissions cover the stream, then contact the rights owner about any required Content ID allowlisting. Do not treat an allowlist request as proof that the underlying use is licensed.

The stream works locally but not for listeners
Check that the output is reaching the public endpoint, not only a local monitor, and test the listener URL from an external connection. Reassess the host, network and audience capacity against actual demand; the documentation does not give a universal bitrate or listener limit for every setup.
