How to Add New Songs to an Indian Music YouTube Stream Without Going Offline

Add a prepared OBS audio source or VLC playlist while keeping the encoder connected to YouTube—and check music rights before you play.

You can add songs to an encoder-based YouTube livestream without ending the broadcast: prepare an audio source or playlist in your encoder, then start it or switch to it while the encoder stays connected and streaming. In OBS, use a Media Source for a supported local audio file or a VLC Video source for a playlist. This keeps the technical feed running; it does not give you permission to play the songs.

Before you change anything on a live stream

Set up the songs, source, and audio levels before the public broadcast whenever possible. Keep the encoder connected to YouTube; in YouTube’s encoder workflow, stopping the encoder feed ends the connection. YouTube recommends testing the stream and checking the Live Control Room preview before an event. YouTube’s encoder setup and live-stream guidance explains the connection workflow.

  • Confirm that you have the rights needed for the songs, including for livestream playback and any archived replay.
  • Prepare the audio source or playlist in the scene that will be sent to YouTube.
  • Test that the song is audible in the stream output and balanced against any other audio.
  • Know how you will stop or replace a track quickly if YouTube flags it.

Add one song in OBS with Media Source

OBS’s Media Source supports local audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. The exact controls can vary with the OBS version and how your scenes are arranged; OBS’s documentation describes the source rather than one universal live-switch sequence. The Media Sources and Sources Guide pages cited here are dated 2022-01-11, so check the labels in your installed version.

  1. Open the OBS project that is already sending the live program to YouTube. Identify the scene currently on air; do not stop the encoder feed.
  2. Add a Media Source to the scene where you want the song to play, or prepare it in a separate scene that you can switch to. Select the local audio file you are authorized to use.
  3. Set the source’s playback behavior before going live. Check whether it should restart when activated and whether it should loop; choose settings that match whether you are playing a one-off track or repeating audio.
  4. Check the OBS audio mixer and stream output. Make sure the new source is not muted, that its level is appropriate, and that other audio sources will not unexpectedly overlap or disappear.
  5. Test playback and the transition in a private or unlisted test stream where suitable, and inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.
  6. During the broadcast, start or enable the prepared source, or switch to the scene containing it, while leaving OBS connected to YouTube. Monitor the output to confirm the song is playing as intended.

OBS’s guide to Media Sources lists supported source types and formats.

Queue several songs with an OBS VLC playlist

For multiple tracks, OBS documents a VLC Video source that can play a list of media items. VLC must be installed for this option. It is a playlist-based alternative to setting up one Media Source per track; neither approach is universally more reliable, and the choice depends on how you want to control playback.

  1. Install VLC if it is not already on the computer running OBS.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will carry the playlist, or prepare it in a scene you can switch to.
  3. Add the authorized media files in the order you intend to play them. Set loop or shuffle behavior in advance if you want either; verify the resulting sequence before going live.
  4. Check that playlist audio reaches the stream output, that other audio is mixed as intended, and that the source starts and transitions correctly in a test.
  5. When live, start or enable the prepared playlist source, or switch to its scene, without stopping the encoder feed. Watch the output and YouTube’s Live Control Room for warnings.

OBS describes the playlist option in its Sources Guide.

Music rights and YouTube Content ID

Keeping the encoder online solves a continuity problem, not a licensing one. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that they have all necessary rights for the live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies copyrighted material, a placeholder may replace the live video and YouTube may warn you to stop using the material. If it continues, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. An archived stream may also receive a Content ID claim after the event. Even if you have licensed the material, a live stream may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

  • Do not assume that buying or subscribing to a song, crediting its creator in the description, or getting permission from only one participant covers every right needed for a livestream.
  • Confirm that permissions cover the actual songs, intended territories, live use, and archived replay. If you plan to monetize, verify that this use is permitted too.
  • Ask the relevant rights owners or a qualified rights provider whether your channel needs Content ID allowlisting. A license alone may not prevent an automated interruption.
  • YouTube’s live Content ID matching feature is intended for eligible Content Manager partners with global rights and exclusive ownership. It is not a permission route for an ordinary streamer to play someone else’s music. See YouTube’s live Content ID matching guidance.

The available guidance does not establish a single India-wide licence or blanket permission for Indian songs. Confirm the rights for the specific repertoire and territories rather than assuming a general rule applies.

Troubleshooting a song change

What you see What to check What to do
The song does not reach the stream Whether the source is active, unmuted, and routed into the live scene and audio output. Enable or start the source, check the OBS audio mixer, and test the stream output again.
The playlist will not load Whether VLC is installed and the media items are available to the computer running OBS. Install VLC if needed, correct the file selection, and test the playlist before switching it on air.
The new song is silent or overlaps other audio Source levels, mute state, and whether other scene audio continues when you switch. Adjust the mix and test the transition; do not assume switching scenes will automatically manage every audio source as intended.
YouTube warns about third-party content The track currently playing and any Content ID warning shown in Live Control Room. Stop or replace the flagged material promptly. Continued third-party content can lead to interruption or termination.
A licensed track is still interrupted Whether the rights owner has allowlisted your channel in Content ID for the live use. Contact the rights owner or provider to confirm the permissions and allowlisting; a license does not necessarily establish allowlisting.

What happens to the replay

YouTube’s documented encoder workflow automatically archives streams under 12 hours when they are ended through YouTube. A live-use permission may not automatically cover the archive, so confirm replay rights as well as live rights. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.
