You can run a black-screen rain stream by having FFmpeg generate a black video feed, pair it with a rain recording you have the right to use, and send the encoded output to YouTube’s ingest server. YouTube supplies the stream URL and key; FFmpeg supplies the audio and video. The command below is a template, not a tested, universal recipe: adjust it for your FFmpeg build, audio file, connection and broadcast duration.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s eligibility and live-streaming tips.
- FFmpeg installed on the computer or host that will run the stream. The available inputs and command-line behavior can vary by build and operating system; consult the FFmpeg documentation.
- A rain-audio file you are licensed or otherwise permitted to stream. Rights for one recording do not establish rights for another; YouTube advises creators to confirm the rights to their audio and video.
- A stable upload connection that can sustain your chosen stream bitrate for as long as you plan to broadcast.
If you have not streamed from the channel before, enable live streaming early rather than waiting until broadcast time. YouTube says initial activation may take up to 24 hours.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter the Live Control Room.
- Create or select an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed by YouTube; these are the destination details FFmpeg needs. YouTube’s walkthrough is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Treat the key like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, repository or chat. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- For the first test, choose an unlisted or private broadcast in the Live Control Room. You can select the intended privacy setting after checking the preview and audio.
Build the black-screen FFmpeg command
FFmpeg can create a synthetic black video input with the color source, accept your rain recording as another input, map the picture and audio, encode them, and publish to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. The official FFmpeg command documentation and filter documentation describe the underlying inputs and filters. This example shows the structure only; it is not verified as runnable unchanged on every system.
ffmpeg [video-input-options] -f lavfi -i "color=c=black:s=1280x720:r=30"
[audio-input-options] -i "rain-audio-file"
[mapping-and-encoding-options]
-f flv "rtmps-or-rtmp-ingest-url/STREAM_KEY"
Replace the bracketed sections with options appropriate to your FFmpeg build and the settings you choose. Replace rain-audio-file with the path to your recording, and replace the final destination with the ingest URL and key shown in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private. Use RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends it to encrypt the feed in transit.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The color input produces a continuing black picture, but the command must also receive audio and encode a live feed. A black preview alone does not prove the rain sound is present. Check both locally and in YouTube’s preview before making the broadcast public.
Choose encoder settings
Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations as a baseline, then verify stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends H.264 video with constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. The exact bitrate and resolution should suit your content and a tested upload connection; consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions rather than assuming one bitrate fits every setup.

Test the stream, then decide how long it should run
- Start FFmpeg with the unlisted or private YouTube stream selected.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the encoder preview and inspect stream health. Listen for the rain audio and confirm the black picture remains active. YouTube recommends testing and continuously monitoring the stream.
- If the preview is healthy, use the intended privacy setting and keep monitoring the local FFmpeg output and YouTube’s stream health while broadcasting.
- Decide how the process should stop. The template does not specify a duration or stopping condition; do not assume it will end at a particular time. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on a longer continuous stream being archived as one video.
For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. Those lead times are useful even for an ambience stream: they leave time to catch a bad key, missing audio or an unstable connection before viewers arrive. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Choose latency for an ambience stream
Rain sounds usually do not require rapid chat interaction, so normal latency is a sensible starting point. YouTube explains that lower latency can help creators respond to chat faster, but may increase buffering. Choose lower latency only if quicker interaction matters enough to accept that tradeoff. See YouTube’s explanation of live-streaming latency.

Keep the stream running: local computer or cloud
With FFmpeg on your own computer, the machine and its internet connection must remain available for the intended broadcast. For unattended operation, compare a local machine with a remote host using practical criteria: can it stay online for the full duration, can its upload capacity sustain the bitrate, how will you monitor and restart the process, and what ongoing cost applies? The guidance here does not establish that any particular hosting provider is suitable or more reliable.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is not a camera-based live feed.

YouTube does not show an incoming feed
Check that FFmpeg is running, the destination uses the current stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, and the key has not been reset or copied incorrectly. If the key was exposed, reset it and update the command. Confirm the channel has live streaming enabled; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
The preview appears but there is no rain audio
Confirm the audio input points to the intended file and that FFmpeg is mapping it into the output. Listen to the local output if your setup allows it, then verify the YouTube preview. Check that the file itself plays and that the selected audio codec is AAC or MP3, as YouTube recommends.

The stream buffers, drops, or reports poor health
Check the upload connection and reduce the selected bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain it. Use YouTube’s stream-health indicators and test again. Confirm the encoder uses CBR and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds; YouTube recommends two seconds. A low-latency mode can increase buffering, so use normal latency for a non-interactive rain stream unless fast chat response is important.
The black image is not the intended size or frame rate
In the template’s color source, s=1280x720 sets the example frame size and r=30 sets its frame rate. Change these to the output you intend to send, and ensure your encoding settings and connection can support that choice.
The stream stops earlier or later than intended
The template deliberately leaves duration and stopping behavior unspecified. Decide how your FFmpeg process should stop and monitor it during the test; do not infer a broadcast length from the example command. For YouTube archiving, the documented automatic archive condition applies to streams under 12 hours.
Quick Recap
Before making a rain stream public
- Confirm you have permission to stream the specific rain recording; a black screen does not remove audio copyright obligations.
- Test privately or unlisted and confirm both the image and sound in the Live Control Room preview.
- Use settings your tested upload connection can sustain, and monitor stream health during the broadcast.
- Consider whether a continuous stream and its archive fit your channel. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours; it does not promise a single archive for longer streams.
