How to Add Multiple Videos to a Continuous YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To play several videos in one continuous YouTube live stream, assemble them into a single outgoing feed with an encoder or production workflow, then send that feed to a YouTube live event. YouTube Studio creates the event and provides its connection details; its documented live-stream workflow does not describe a control that automatically turns an ordinary channel playlist into a live broadcast.

How the continuous stream works

Think of the live broadcast as two connected parts: YouTube is the destination, and an encoder produces and sends the video feed. Put the videos in sequence in the encoder or another production workflow that can play them as one feed. A regular YouTube playlist is for viewers to watch videos on YouTube; it is not, by itself, a live-stream queue.

YouTube supports software and hardware encoder workflows. The exact way to add local files, order them, loop them, or transition between them depends on the encoder you choose. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains how to connect an encoder, but does not give product-specific instructions for building a multi-file playlist in every encoder. Confirm those controls in the current documentation for your chosen software or hardware.

Before you begin

  • Check that your channel is eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Follow the eligibility prompts shown for your account. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
  • Choose an encoder that can play your videos in the intended order and send a continuous feed to YouTube. Check that it supports an ingestion protocol available for your event, and test that it handles your video and audio as expected.
  • Have your video files ready and check that you have the rights needed to use their video and audio in a livestream.
  • Plan how you will monitor the broadcast and respond if the encoder or connection stops sending video.

Set up and start the stream

  1. Build the video sequence in your encoder. Add the intended files in order and configure any looping or transitions the encoder supports. Preview the full sequence, including the change from one file to the next, and check audio before going live. The specific playlist controls vary by encoder.
  2. Create or schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. For a new live stream, use the Stream tab; to schedule a broadcast, go to Manage > Schedule Stream. YouTube’s event setup provides the connection information the encoder needs. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder. Find them in Live Control Room and enter them in the matching server URL and stream key fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it in a public recording or screenshot. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  4. Select a supported ingestion protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted version of RTMP. Use a protocol supported by both the event setup and your encoder. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion; it has higher latency than RTMP and requires specific segment settings, so use it only when your workflow calls for it and the encoder supports the required configuration. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.
  5. Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed, then check picture, audio, and the first video before the public start. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder streaming tips.
  6. Start and end the event deliberately. For a scheduled stream, start the event from Live Control Room after the preview appears. At the end, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder feed according to the workflow shown in Studio.

Choose an encoder workflow that fits the job

Do not choose solely by whether an encoder can send a signal to YouTube. For a multi-video broadcast, check the whole path from file playback to stream recovery:

  • Can it play the specific local video files in sequence?
  • Can it loop the sequence or transition between files the way you need?
  • Does it support the ingestion protocol and settings required by the YouTube event?
  • Can your computer or production setup run it for the full broadcast without interrupting playback or the outgoing feed?
  • Can you detect a dropped connection and restart or recover the stream?

YouTube’s HLS guidance lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. That does not establish a particular playlist workflow inside OBS; check OBS’s current documentation for the file sequencing and looping behavior you need.

Copyright, archives, and live-stream checks

Having a file available does not necessarily give you permission to broadcast its music, footage, or other material. Check the rights for every video and audio track before streaming, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for your channel and content. Do not assume that a continuous stream or a playlist changes how those rules apply.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need a replay, verify the current archive behavior and settings in Studio and plan the event length accordingly. YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: check that the stream URL and key match the event in Live Control Room, that the key has not been replaced, and that the selected protocol is supported by both YouTube and the encoder.
  • The preview appears, but a video does not advance: inspect the encoder’s file order, playback, and loop settings. YouTube receives the encoder’s produced feed; it does not advance an ordinary channel playlist on the encoder’s behalf.
  • Video or audio is missing in the preview: check the encoder’s selected file and audio source, then preview the sequence locally before starting the event.
  • The stream becomes unstable or drops: monitor stream health in Live Control Room, check the encoder and connection, and restore the outgoing feed if it stops. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends monitoring stream health; recovery steps depend on the encoder and your setup.
  • The broadcast has more delay than expected: check whether the event is using HLS. YouTube documents higher latency for HLS than RTMP; select the protocol appropriate to your workflow and supported by the encoder.
