You can keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded videos by sending a prepared video feed from an encoder to a YouTube livestream. YouTube provides the live stream, server URL and stream key; the encoder or a playout service must handle playback, looping and recovery. YouTube’s documented controls do not provide an endlessly looping video playlist by themselves.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A video or playlist you have the rights to stream, including the rights to music and other material it contains.
- An encoder or playout service that can send video to YouTube and keep playing or looping your files on the schedule you want. Confirm its loop and recovery behavior rather than assuming YouTube supplies them.
YouTube’s documentation describes encoder-based livestreaming, but does not make a format-specific ruling that every continuous stream of prerecorded videos is permitted or prohibited. Follow the general livestream rules and channel policies, and monitor your stream.
Set up the YouTube livestream
- Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Create a livestream or schedule one. Scheduling can make an upcoming stream available for promotion and reminders. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Choose stream settings. You can reuse stream settings, including a custom stream key. YouTube also documents auto-start and auto-stop controls. These affect starting and stopping a livestream; they are not controls for looping video files. See Manage live stream settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter both in the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to connect to your stream, so do not publish or share it unnecessarily.
- Configure the prepared-video feed. Select the video or playlist in the encoder or service, set the desired playback schedule and looping behavior, and confirm how it handles a finished file, a dropped connection and a restart. The YouTube encoder guide explains how to connect, but does not endorse a particular file-looping product.
- Start the encoder and check the live preview. Once YouTube receives the feed, it creates the stream’s watch page. Confirm the video and audio are working in Live Control Room before leaving it unattended.
- Review the stream after launch. Check for interruptions, copyright claims and policy issues. A scheduled stream or YouTube’s auto-start setting does not ensure the encoder will remain online.
Choose how to keep the videos playing
Encoder software on a computer
Software encoding is a supported way to send a feed to YouTube. You need a computer that stays powered on and connected, plus software that can play and loop the prepared files. Check whether the software can restart playback and reconnect after a network or application failure. If the computer sleeps, shuts down or loses its connection, the outgoing feed may stop.
Dedicated hardware encoder
A hardware encoder is an optional physical setup. YouTube says software encoders can be used and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events; that does not make hardware necessary for a basic prerecorded channel. Before buying, verify that the device supports the YouTube output you need, file playback and looping, scheduling, and recovery after outages. Managed cloud playout
A cloud playout service can keep the feed running without relying on a home computer, but its precise capabilities depend on the provider. Check that it supports YouTube, your intended video quality, playlists or looping, stream-key control, and recovery if YouTube or the service disconnects. Do not assume that every hosting service offers the same features.
Rights, originality and monetization
Secure rights for everything in the stream
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to livestream the video, music and other included material, as well as complying with applicable law and YouTube rules. Permission to use a track or video does not remove the need to follow YouTube’s other channel policies. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

Make the channel meaningfully original
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to the channel, not only to one livestream. Its July 15, 2025 update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material is ineligible for monetization. Reused content is a separate review: YouTube considers whether repurposed material has significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. Owning a video or having permission to use it does not by itself settle the reused-content question. Simply putting your videos into a continuous stream does not assure eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
Understand what monetization features do—and do not—promise
If your channel is eligible and monetization is enabled, YouTube lists livestream ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships as possible revenue options. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve, and these options do not guarantee that a particular always-on prerecorded channel will qualify. See YouTube’s livestream monetization guidance.

What YouTube handles and what it does not
- YouTube handles: the livestream connection and watch page, stream settings, scheduled streams, and documented auto-start and auto-stop controls.
- Your encoder or service handles: selecting and playing files, looping a playlist, maintaining the outgoing feed, and any restart or recovery workflow.
- Archive rule: YouTube states, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” This is an archiving rule, not a stated maximum stream duration. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
The official guidance cited here does not establish a built-in YouTube feature for indefinite file looping, guaranteed livestream uptime, or automatic restart after an encoder or network failure. Verify those capabilities with the system you choose.

The encoder cannot connect
- Check that the server URL and stream key were copied into the correct encoder fields.
- Confirm you are using the current stream key associated with the selected YouTube stream. If you reset or changed it, update the encoder too.
- Check channel livestream eligibility and restrictions in YouTube Studio. YouTube says a restriction cannot be bypassed by streaming from another channel; see Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.
The video stops instead of looping
The selected encoder or service may be set to play a file once, or its playlist may have ended. Check its playback and repeat settings, then confirm what it does when a playlist finishes. YouTube’s stream controls do not substitute for file-looping controls.

The livestream drops and does not return
Check the encoder’s network connection and whether the software or device is still running. Then confirm whether your encoder or service can reconnect and resume playback after an interruption. YouTube documents auto-start and auto-stop, but these settings do not establish automatic recovery from an encoder or network failure.
The stream is live but viewers see a problem
Inspect the Live Control Room preview and the encoder’s outgoing feed. Check the selected file, audio, playback position and playlist order. If the video or music triggers a rights issue, pause or replace the material and resolve the claim through YouTube’s applicable process.

The stream runs, but monetization is unavailable
Check channel eligibility and review the channel as a whole against YouTube’s inauthentic- and reused-content policies. A livestream format or ownership of the source videos alone does not establish monetization eligibility.
