Start by checking the encoder preview: if the video is black there, fix the file, scene, media source or encoder before changing YouTube settings. If the preview and local recording show the picture but viewers see black, check YouTube’s Live Control Room health messages, the outgoing stream settings and the encoder’s internet connection. A successful connection to YouTube does not prove that video is being sent.
Find where the picture disappears
Work through these checks in order. This separates a problem in the prerecorded video or encoder from an ingest problem at YouTube or playback trouble affecting viewers. The exact cause depends on your encoder, file and health messages; no single setting fixes every black screen.
- Check the encoder preview. Confirm the intended scene is active, the prerecorded media source is visible and playing, and that source is routed into the scene being sent to YouTube.
- Check a local recording or archive. If the preview and local file are both black, focus on the file, source, scene, routing or encoder. If they show the picture, move to the YouTube health and outgoing-configuration checks.
- Inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room. Read the health indicator and each timestamped error. Fix the specific reported issue rather than changing unrelated settings.
- Compare viewer reports. Ask whether the problem affects one viewer, several people on one shared network, or viewers on different networks. That pattern helps distinguish a playback or local-network problem from an encoder-side issue.
This is a diagnostic sequence, not a guarantee: configurations vary, and YouTube’s guidance covers livestream troubleshooting broadly rather than every prerecorded-file setup.
If the encoder preview or local archive is black
Verify the media source and scene
- Make sure the media source points to the intended video and that playback has started. A source that is stopped, hidden or not routed into the outgoing scene will not produce picture.
- Confirm the correct scene is active and that the video source is visible within it. Check the outgoing scene itself, not only a source preview or another scene.
- Check the file by playing it outside the encoder. If the file itself has no picture, resolve that before troubleshooting YouTube.
Check the encoder and its output
YouTube recommends inspecting the stream directly in the encoder, checking encoder errors and CPU load, and reviewing a local archive for audio or video problems. Update the encoder to its latest version. If the source and archive appear sound but the encoder output remains faulty, YouTube says trying another encoder may help.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not treat a connected RTMP session as proof that the encoder is transmitting video. Audio can reach YouTube while the video source is absent or misrouted.
If OBS shows video but YouTube is black
Use the same local-versus-ingest split even if you use OBS: confirm the picture is in the active outgoing scene and in a local recording, then inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room. Exact menu names can differ by OBS version and operating system, so use the relevant source, scene and output controls in your installed version rather than relying on a menu path that may not match.

If the local outputs show video but YouTube reports a missing video stream, unsupported format, resolution mismatch, frame-rate problem or keyframe-frequency issue, adjust the outgoing configuration to address that message. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as ingest protocols, H.264, H.265 and AV1 as video codec options, and AAC or MP3 for audio. Do not switch codecs blindly when YouTube has not reported a related issue.
Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Live Control Room displays stream errors beside a health indicator, with timestamps. YouTube describes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate; use the actual message and time to identify when the fault began. Its error reference includes absent audio or video streams, unsupported formats, bitrate or resolution mismatches, frame rate and keyframe interval.

- Missing video: Recheck that video is present in the encoder’s outgoing stream, not merely visible in a source preview.
- Unsupported format or settings: Compare the reported issue with the encoder’s outgoing video and audio configuration. Change only the setting implicated by the error.
- Resolution or frame-rate mismatch: Match the stream output to the selected ingest configuration rather than assuming the file’s properties are accepted unchanged.
- Keyframe warning: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
For current published encoder options and recommendations, see YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s stream errors reference.
If the encoder and YouTube preview look healthy, but viewers see black
Use the spread of reports to narrow the issue. One viewer reporting black video points first toward that viewer’s device or connection. Several viewers on the same shared network may point to that network. Reports from viewers on different networks can implicate the encoder even if the creator’s local preview looks fine.

When the encoder output appears healthy, YouTube recommends checking outbound internet strength; contact your internet service provider if the test indicates a connection problem. Do not change the media source or codec solely because one viewer has a playback issue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the prerecorded setup before the next broadcast
- Use the actual prerecorded file and the scene intended for the live stream.
- Run a test with both audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, so the media source is actively exercised.
- Check the encoder preview and a local recording, then monitor YouTube stream health and timestamped messages during the test.
- If a fault appears, note its location and the exact health message before changing settings; then repeat the test to confirm the correction.

Optional: dedicated hardware for scheduled prerecorded playout
If you need a hardware-based workflow rather than an existing computer encoder, YouTube’s encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus with PlayToStream for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. It is a specialized workflow option, not a general repair for a bad source, scene routing, unsupported settings or connection problem. See YouTube’s encoder directory.
Or let it run in the cloud
