FFmpeg can send a prerecorded lesson loop, camera feed, or generated slate to YouTube Live, but reliable 24/7 streaming takes more than a running command: you need a suitable source, a continuously available host, enough sustained upload capacity, health monitoring, and a tested recovery plan. YouTube supplies the ingest URL and stream key; for a standard H.264 starting profile, use RTMPS, constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval, AAC audio, and a bitrate that matches your resolution and actual connection.
How do I stream a video to YouTube Live using FFmpeg?
The workflow is: prepare your source, create or schedule a live event in YouTube Live Control Room, copy its server URL and stream key, configure FFmpeg to encode and publish to that destination, then verify the preview and stream-health indicators. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes copying the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s stream settings.
- Choose what FFmpeg will read. It may be a local video, a playlist, a camera input, or a generated graphic. Input options and looping behavior depend on the source and FFmpeg build.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event.
- Protect the key. Treat it like a password that grants publishing access. Do not expose it in screenshots, public scripts, logs, or a source-control repository. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live settings and update the encoder configuration.
- Configure FFmpeg. Set the source input, video and audio encoders, bitrate and keyframe settings, output container, and YouTube RTMPS destination. The exact command depends on the source, installed FFmpeg build, and chosen codec, so there is no single safe universal command for every setup.
- Test before relying on it. Send a test with motion and audio similar to the actual lesson stream. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages in Live Control Room, and keep monitoring after it is live.
At a high level, the publishing chain is input → encode and mux → RTMP(S) output to YouTube’s server URL and stream key. FFmpeg documents RTMP publishing in its protocol documentation. YouTube recommends RTMPS; Google describes it as RTMP transmitted through an SSL connection in its RTMPS ingestion guide.
What FFmpeg settings should I use for YouTube Live?
For a conventional standard-dynamic-range H.264 stream, use the settings below as a starting profile, then check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance for your selected resolution and codec. YouTube’s published bitrates are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain them.

The two H.264 bitrate examples are YouTube platform values, not a measurement of Indian broadband or a promise of stable delivery. Leave upload headroom beyond the encoded stream’s total bitrate, including audio, and test at the time and on the connection you intend to use. A connection that briefly reaches a target speed may still be unsuitable if it fluctuates or is shared.
In FFmpeg, keep the configuration conceptually separated: the input section identifies the source; video/audio options select encoding and rate control; GOP or keyframe options set the interval; and the output section selects the streaming format and destination. Avoid putting the stream key in a command file that is committed or shared. A secret store or protected environment is safer than a public or broadly accessible script.

How can I loop a video 24/7 on YouTube?
For a prerecorded lesson, FFmpeg must read the video repeatedly while publishing a real-time live output. The precise input and looping flags depend on the file, playlist, timestamps, and FFmpeg build; a loop option that works for one input type may not behave as expected for another. Test the full loop before scheduling a continuous broadcast, including the transition from the end of the file back to its start.
- Check that the source has the intended audio track, aspect ratio, frame rate, and duration.
- Watch the loop boundary for silence, a black frame, a timestamp jump, or an abrupt lesson transition.
- Confirm that the output is paced in real time rather than being sent as quickly as the file can be read.
- For multiple lessons, validate playlist order and what happens if a file is missing or unreadable.
Camera feeds and generated slates require different input handling from prerecorded files. The YouTube side remains the same: use the current event’s server URL and key, and verify the resulting preview and health status.

How do I keep an FFmpeg livestream running if the connection drops?
A continuous broadcast needs an always-on machine or service, stable sustained upload, monitoring, alerting, and a recovery procedure that has been tested. A successful FFmpeg process only shows that the process is running; it does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream or that viewers can see it.
Plan for the host and connection
A computer in your home is exposed to local power, router, ISP, and device-restart failures. Hosted compute can move some of those dependencies away from home, but it still needs administration, network capacity, and a recovery plan. The official platform guidance does not identify a best computer, cloud provider, ISP, or India-specific network configuration.

Monitor and recover
- Check YouTube Live Control Room stream-health indicators and messages during operation.
- Set up a way to notice a failed encoder, lost network connection, or unhealthy incoming stream; define who responds and how.
- Test what happens after a brief network interruption and after restarting the host. Some source loops, timestamps, and reconnect behavior may require additional FFmpeg options or an external supervisor.
- Do not assume that a restart strategy is reliable until it has been exercised with your actual source, encoder, host, and YouTube event.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Its official documentation establishes ingest and encoder settings, not a universal FFmpeg restart command or a guaranteed 24/7 uptime method.

YouTube’s encoder workflow says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that statement as a guarantee that a continuous broadcast lasting longer than 12 hours will produce a complete archive. If preserving the lesson matters, plan separate local recording or deliberate shorter scheduled sessions, and verify YouTube’s current behavior for your event before depending on an archive.
