The loop repeats only while FFmpeg and its host remain running; it does not by itself provide automatic recovery or guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream.
Before you start: check the channel and the content
Confirm live-stream eligibility
YouTube’s general eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and rules before configuring an encoder.
Prepare the episode and visual
Make sure you have rights to every podcast episode, music bed, image, and other asset in the feed. Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; whether a particular catalog is cleared depends on your rights and licenses. Choose a still image or other visual that you are entitled to use. FFmpeg can combine that visual with the podcast audio, but the exact input options depend on the file formats and the FFmpeg build installed on your host.
Create the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or select a stream, then set its privacy, schedule, and metadata.
- Choose the encoder connection details shown for that stream: the stream URL and stream key. YouTube calls a stream key like the stream’s “password and address.” Keep it secret; do not expose it in a public command, screenshot, repository, or log. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and stream settings guidance.
Build an FFmpeg loop and send it to YouTube
Understand the input options
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinitely looping the following input. Put it before the input file it applies to: FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output. When reading file media for a live output, -re reads at the input’s native rate and can help pace packet delivery. Do not blindly throttle a true live capture or network source. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Use a command pattern, not a copied secret
There is no single safe command that fits every audio file, still image, installed FFmpeg build, or YouTube ingest URL. Use this as a structure and adapt the input and encoding options to your files and YouTube’s current Live Control Room details:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/podcast-audio.mp3 -loop 1 -i /path/to/cover.png
-c:v libx264 -tune stillimage -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 3M -maxrate 3M -bufsize 6M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -shortest
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_SERVER/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This illustrative pattern uses H.264 video at 30 fps with a two-second keyframe interval and AAC audio. The exact endpoint format varies: use the server URL and key format displayed for your stream, and avoid putting a live key in shell history or shared logs. A still image may need different looping or duration handling for your FFmpeg version and chosen inputs; verify that the output continues for the intended duration rather than ending when one input ends. If you pass the key through an environment variable or protected configuration, ensure your shell and process logs do not print it.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For a still-image podcast visual, a modest resolution is usually sufficient; select a bitrate that fits both YouTube’s current encoder table and your stable outbound capacity.
| Example H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not independent performance tests. Its table also lists minimum values and separate recommendations for other codecs. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when choosing output values because platform guidance can change.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start the encoder well before the stream is meant to be public. Watch the Live Control Room preview and confirm it receives a stable picture and sound.
- Check the channel’s watch page and a mobile device to confirm viewers can see and hear the stream as intended.
- Test your recovery plan by simulating a controlled encoder or network interruption before relying on it for an unattended run. YouTube advises testing failover; the behavior of your specific FFmpeg build, host, and restart setup still needs validation.
- If you are also recording locally, check that the archive file exists and plays correctly.
- Monitor audio and video continuously when the stream matters. Also monitor FFmpeg’s process status, host resource use, available disk space, and network path; these are operational checks, not an uptime guarantee.
YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom and accounting for both primary and backup stream bitrate where applicable. A network disruption can break the stream. Its guidance is at YouTube’s streaming tips and live-streaming tips. A wired network connection is an optional way to avoid relying on Wi-Fi, but YouTube does not specify a cable category or speed for this use.
Keep FFmpeg running—and plan for failures
Looping is not process supervision
-stream_loop -1 repeats an input only for as long as the FFmpeg process keeps running. It does not supply a supervisor, restart policy, network recovery strategy, or guaranteed uninterrupted YouTube ingest. For unattended operation, use a service manager or other process supervisor, configure alerts, and test the actual response to a dropped connection and process exit. Those choices depend on your operating system and deployment; neither FFmpeg’s cited loop documentation nor YouTube promises recovery for every interruption.

Choose where to run the encoder
| Approach | What it means for continuous operation | Trade-offs to assess |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg on a local machine | The process depends on that machine staying powered on and connected. | Simple to understand, but you manage the host, network, monitoring, encoding workload, and restarts. |
| Dedicated always-on host or server | Can support unattended operation, but the stream still depends on its configuration and network. | You choose and manage hosting, monitoring, restart behavior, bandwidth, and access to media and stream keys. |
| Hosted cloud service | Can reduce direct management of an encoder process, depending on the service. | Verify supported destinations, formats, recovery behavior, pricing, and key handling for the specific provider; these vary and should not be assumed. |
No approach guarantees 24/7 service. Compare options by expected recovery, operator skill, bandwidth stability, encoding workload, observability, cost, and control of stream keys and media.

YouTube’s encoder setup help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise that one event can run or be archived indefinitely. If you need recordings, decide how to handle segments and restarts, and verify the current behavior in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshooting a continuous FFmpeg stream
- YouTube receives no signal: Check the ingest URL, stream key, and selected stream in the Live Control Room. Confirm the key has not been rotated and that the command uses the current endpoint format.
- The stream starts, then ends: Check whether an input reaches its end and whether your image or audio duration options cause FFmpeg to exit. Confirm looping is placed before the intended input and test the full command with your actual files.
- Video or audio is unstable: Compare the configured codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current recommendations. Check encoder load and whether the output bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity.
- The stream drops during a network interruption: A loop option will not restore the connection by itself. Check process status and logs, then validate your supervisor or restart procedure and alerting.
- Viewers cannot hear the podcast: Check that the selected input contains the expected audio stream, that audio is mapped and encoded, and that the Live Control Room preview and watch page both have sound.
- The live stream has no usable archive: Check the event duration and current archive behavior in Studio. The documented automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not a single indefinite event.
Or let it run in the cloud
