If podcast audio is out of sync with the picture on YouTube Live, first find out whether the mismatch is already present in your encoder preview or local recording. If it is, correct the affected source in your encoder—delay audio when it is early, or delay the image when it is early. If the local output is aligned, investigate the stream connection and viewer playback instead. YouTube’s stream-latency setting changes how long delivery takes; it is not a lip-sync control.

First distinguish lip sync from stream latency

Audio/video sync describes whether the voice matches the speaker’s mouth or visible action. Stream latency is the time between capture by the encoder or camera and display to a viewer. YouTube’s low-latency options affect that end-to-end delay and can involve a buffering trade-off; changing them does not correct a relative audio-to-picture offset. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

If viewers say the whole broadcast arrives late but the image and sound remain together, you are dealing with latency. If the voice is ahead of the speaker’s mouth, or follows it, diagnose sync instead.

Find where the sync problem starts

Compare the encoder preview and a local recording

Watch and listen in the encoder’s preview. If available, record a short local archive and check that too. YouTube recommends checking the audio and video sources routed to the encoder, encoder errors, CPU load, and the archive when troubleshooting a live stream. If the local output already has the mismatch, focus on the source routing or encoder before changing YouTube delivery settings. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide has further checks.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check whether it affects one viewer or many

Monitor the stream in Live Control Room and, if possible, on a separate viewer device. YouTube treats reports from one viewer as an indication to check that viewer’s device or internet connection; reports from viewers on separate connections point more toward the encoder. If affected viewers share a network, that network may be involved. These are clues, not guarantees.

Make a repeatable sync test

Use a short test with a clear visible movement and matching sound, such as clapping once in view of the camera. Compare the visible contact with the sound transient in the preview or recording, and repeat the test to avoid adjusting for a playback hiccup. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement like those planned for the stream (encoder settings and testing). A clapperboard is optional; it is not a repair and a hand clap is enough.

Correct a stable offset in OBS

Make one change at a time and check the result with another short recording. The required offset depends on the actual camera, microphone, interface, capture device, and routing; there is no universal millisecond value to copy.

If audio is ahead of the picture

  1. In OBS, open Advanced Audio Properties for the relevant audio source.
  2. Adjust Sync Offset (ms) to delay that audio source. OBS Project forum guidance describes this control for audio timing: OBS audio delay discussion.
  3. Record or preview another clap test and adjust in small increments until the sound and visible contact line up.

If the picture is ahead of the audio

  1. Identify the image source that needs to be delayed, such as the webcam.
  2. Add OBS’s Render Delay filter to that image source and adjust it while checking a fresh test. OBS documents this filter as a way to sync a webcam image with microphone audio: Render Delay filter.
  3. Verify the result in the preview or local recording, then check the stream from another viewer device.

Delay only the signal that is early. Avoid applying offsets to multiple sources without testing: that can create a new mismatch or make it harder to identify the original cause.

If audio keeps drifting out of sync

A stable offset can often be corrected with a constant delay. A mismatch that grows or changes over time is different; a single fixed offset may not solve its cause. Check whether the local archive also drifts. If it does, inspect source routing, encoder errors and CPU load, and make sure the encoder software is current. If the local recording stays aligned while the YouTube stream does not, inspect stream health and the outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide covers these checks, but does not prescribe one universal drift fix: troubleshoot a live stream.

If the local output is aligned, check delivery

  • Review YouTube’s stream health indicators and any encoder errors.
  • Run an upload-speed check and confirm the connection has headroom for the stream. YouTube advises sufficient upload capacity and headroom in its live-streaming tips.
  • If the connection appears faulty, YouTube recommends contacting the internet provider.
  • Do not use audience latency settings as a sync fix: they control delivery delay and the buffering trade-off, not the relative timing of voice and picture.

Common causes and fixes

What you notice Likely place to investigate Next step
Audio is ahead in the OBS preview and local recording Audio source timing or routing Delay the affected audio source with Sync Offset, then retest.
Picture is ahead in the local output Image source timing Try Render Delay on the affected image source and verify with a new test.
The mismatch worsens during the broadcast Source, encoder, CPU load, or delivery health Check whether the archive also drifts; then investigate the relevant local or delivery path.
Only one viewer reports a mismatch That viewer’s device or connection may be involved Compare with Live Control Room and another viewer device.
Many viewers on different connections report the issue Encoder output is a stronger possibility Recheck the local output, source routing, encoder errors, and CPU load.
Many affected viewers share one network The shared network may be involved Compare with viewers on separate connections and inspect stream health.
