Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can host a continuous YouTube Live feed from a Mumbai-region cloud VM by running FFmpeg on the server and sending its output to YouTube over RTMPS. For a prerecorded video, FFmpeg can loop the file; YouTube supplies the ingest URL and stream key. This is a self-managed setup, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: the VM, encoder process, source file, network path, or YouTube connection can fail.
Choose the right streaming setup
The simplest architecture for one continuous feed is video file or generated feed → FFmpeg on a VM → YouTube Live over RTMPS. FFmpeg encodes or sends the feed; YouTube receives it and broadcasts it to viewers.
- Use direct FFmpeg on a VM when you need one outbound rendition and are prepared to manage the server, process, monitoring, and recovery.
- Consider a managed live-transcoding service if you need managed transcoding, multiple renditions, or remote distribution. That is a different service model, with its own configuration and charges.
Google Cloud lists Mumbai as asia-south1 for its Live Stream API. That confirms a location for that managed API; it does not prove that every VM family is available there. In your chosen provider’s console, verify that the exact compute family and networking you need can be deployed in Mumbai. Google’s location guidance also recommends weighing latency, cost, resilience, and proximity to other cloud resources: Google Cloud Live Stream API locations.
Prepare the YouTube live stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use. Follow YouTube’s current account and live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- In the stream settings, reveal and copy the RTMPS stream URL and stream key. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; explicitly choose the secure RTMPS destination. Keep the key private, and do not paste it into a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions.
- Check the stream’s privacy and scheduling settings before testing. A short private or unlisted test helps confirm that the endpoint, key, audio, video, and stream health are correct before a public broadcast.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried inside TLS; its secure ingestion uses port 443. The destination and key belong to the particular YouTube stream, so do not rely on example values. The protocol details are in YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide, and the stream resource’s ingestion fields are documented at YouTube Live Streams API.

Deploy a Mumbai VM and install FFmpeg
Select and configure the VM
Create a VM in a Mumbai region only after confirming the selected operating system image, compute family, and required network access are available there. No universal instance size is established for this workload: CPU needs depend on whether FFmpeg must transcode, plus the source and output resolution, codec, and frame rate. Benchmark the actual stream on the VM you select rather than assuming a generic CPU or RAM minimum.
Allow outbound access to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest endpoint on port 443. Plan secure access to the VM and a protected way to supply the stream key. Avoid placing a real key in a world-readable file or a command that could be exposed in process listings or logs; use an appropriately restricted configuration or secret-handling method for your operating system and deployment.

Install FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg using the package manager for the VM’s operating system. Google Cloud documentation gives sudo apt install ffmpeg as an example for a suitable Debian/Ubuntu environment; package availability and version depend on the image. Check the installed version and confirm that it supports the input and output codecs you plan to use.
Set encoder parameters and test the feed
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, the current main table lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate; use the value for the correct codec and resolution in YouTube’s live settings guidance, and ensure the VM has reliable upload capacity for the chosen bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Loop a prerecorded file with FFmpeg
AWS’s FFmpeg example demonstrates the relevant loop pattern: read in real time with -re, repeat the input indefinitely with -stream_loop -1, encode as needed, and send to an RTMPS destination. It is an example to adapt, not a YouTube-specific command or production guarantee. Replace the placeholders below with the RTMPS URL and stream key copied from your YouTube Live Control Room, and adapt codec and bitrate settings to your file and YouTube’s current guidance.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This illustrative command sets a 1080p30-style H.264 bitrate and a 60-frame GOP for a 30 fps output; it does not resize the input, so it is not a complete resolution-conversion recipe. Confirm the file’s dimensions, frame rate, audio format, and FFmpeg build, and adjust or remove options that do not fit the source. Keep credentials out of saved command history and logs. The FFmpeg loop and RTMPS pattern is shown in AWS’s FFmpeg streaming example; AWS notes that example parameters need production tuning.

Make the process recoverable and observable
A continuous-stream goal requires more than leaving FFmpeg in a shell. Arrange for the process to start after a VM reboot and restart after an encoder crash; retain logs securely and monitor for a missing source file, encoder exit, upload failure, and YouTube stream-health alerts. Test reboot and process-restart behavior before relying on it. The exact service manager, container configuration, monitoring, and recovery design depend on the chosen OS and provider; a restart policy alone cannot fix a bad stream key, exhausted disk, corrupt source, or persistent network failure.
A single VM and ingest connection remain single points of failure. A second encoder or failover design may reduce some risks, but needs its own testing and should not be treated as automatic continuity. YouTube can also disconnect an ingest session, so include an operator procedure for checking the Live Control Room and restarting or correcting the source when automated recovery does not restore a healthy feed.

Understand managed-service limits and total cost
Do not confuse a self-managed FFmpeg process publishing from a VM with Google Cloud’s managed Live Stream API. Google documents that an active API live session lasts 24 hours and that a channel may be restarted after 24 hours in the active streaming state. That stated limit applies to the managed API; the cited documentation does not establish the same 24-hour limit for direct FFmpeg publishing from a VM. It also does not prove that a VM-based stream will remain uninterrupted.
For a direct VM, estimate the full workload rather than treating compute as the only cost. Include VM hours, outbound data transfer at the selected bitrate and duration, storage, and any other provider charges. There is no like-for-like price without a provider, VM SKU, region, bitrate, and schedule. Google’s managed API has separate region- and resource/output-dependent charges, including charges for active channels and started distribution endpoints; see its Live Stream API pricing page. That is not a price quote for a basic VM.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded uploads live, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to operating an encoder VM: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The stream runs at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera encoder. Visit StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
