A VPS keeps the encoder running away from your home computer; it does not, by itself, guarantee uninterrupted delivery.
Choose a streaming setup that fits the show
A headless VPS running FFmpeg is a practical choice for looping a file or playlist. It avoids managing a graphical desktop, but you will need to configure the command line, validate the output, and arrange logs, restarts, and health checks.
A GUI encoder such as OBS on a VPS with a desktop can suit a show that needs scene switching, overlays, or hands-on control. It also adds desktop management and may require more server resources. Check that the provider supports the graphics and encoding workload you plan to use; no universal OBS-on-VPS resource requirement is established.
For either approach, compare VPS options by sustained outbound-transfer policy, CPU performance for your chosen encoding mode, storage, network region, access to logs and monitoring, and total cost. Suitability depends on your resolution, whether the server must encode or can pass through compatible media, and the provider’s terms. There is no universal CPU, RAM, or price recommendation for this workload.

Prepare the podcast media and YouTube stream
Check the content and format
- Use episodes, music, artwork, and other material you have permission to stream. YouTube’s copyright rules still apply to prerecorded content.
- Choose what viewers will see: a static image, visualizer, recorded video, or a sequence of episodes. Confirm that the audio and video play correctly and that loops or transitions behave as intended.
- Check the source files and proposed output against YouTube’s current encoder settings for codec, audio, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Those settings can change, so use YouTube’s resolution-specific guidance rather than copying an old command unchanged.
Create or select the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select the stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown there into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- If you schedule the stream, follow the additional Live Control Room steps YouTube shows for that scheduled broadcast. Starting the encoder sends the feed to YouTube; check the Live Control Room status and the watch page before treating the stream as live.

Configure FFmpeg and YouTube ingest
FFmpeg can read local media and send a live output to a network destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over an SSL connection; use it when supported by your encoder. Configure the stream to match YouTube’s current guidance: its settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select the bitrate for the actual output resolution from the current table rather than relying on a generic bitrate.

See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Google’s RTMPS delivery guidance. FFmpeg’s muxer documentation includes an RTMP example using a FIFO muxer to continue real-time processing through temporary failures and attempt recovery. Treat that as an option, not a guarantee: recovery behavior can depend on your installed FFmpeg version and the interruption, and it cannot guarantee YouTube will resume the same broadcast.
Run the encoder continuously and test it
- Install FFmpeg on the VPS, place the authorized source media where the service can read it, and configure the output with the YouTube ingest URL and stream key. Keep credentials out of public scripts, repositories, and logs.
- Run the command under a service supervisor such as systemd, or an equivalent tool. Configure startup after reboot, a restart policy for process failure, and persistent logs so you can inspect what happened.
- Before leaving it unattended, test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Confirm the picture and sound in the YouTube player, review stream-health messages in Live Control Room, and check that the playlist or loop advances as expected.
- Keep an independent check of delivery and playback. A running FFmpeg process does not prove that viewers are receiving a healthy, advancing stream.

Monitor three different kinds of uptime
- Process uptime: Is FFmpeg or the GUI encoder still running? A supervisor and service logs help identify crashes and restarts.
- Transport health: Is the encoder continuing to send data to YouTube? Check encoder output and YouTube’s stream-health status.
- Viewer playback: Is the YouTube player actually advancing with usable audio and video? Check the watch page independently rather than assuming a healthy local process means a healthy broadcast.

Plan for archives, bandwidth, and failures
Do not rely on one 24/7 broadcast as a complete archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a promise that a single continuous 24/7 stream will produce one complete VOD. If a complete archive matters, make an independent recording or divide the programming into manageable stream segments. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Budget for continuous server and network use
An always-on broadcast uses server capacity and outbound network transfer continuously. The amount depends on the selected resolution and bitrate, encoding workload, source-media storage, and the VPS provider’s egress rules. Confirm those limits and the total recurring cost with the provider before committing; a headline server specification does not establish that sustained outbound traffic is included.
Diagnose common symptoms
