First find out whether the stream is stopping for the church’s operator, for viewers, or both. The cause may be the church’s upload connection, the encoder or its audio/video sources—or a viewer’s own device or internet connection. Use YouTube’s Live Control Room and the checks below to narrow it down before changing settings at random.
Start by finding out who is affected
Ask whether the operator sees a problem in the encoder or Live Control Room, or whether only viewers are reporting errors. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance uses the pattern of reports as a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee:
- One viewer has trouble: Ask what they see and whether they can reproduce it. If the operator and other viewers can watch normally, check that viewer’s device and connection first.
- Several viewers on the same connection have trouble: Investigate that shared network. Their common connection may be the problem even if the church’s stream is healthy.
- Viewers on different connections report the same interruption: Check the encoder and stream health at the church.
- The operator also sees the stream stop or degrade: Start with the encoder, its input sources and the church’s outgoing internet connection.
Use viewer and error information in Live Control Room alongside reports from people watching on different networks. A report from one person alone does not establish that the church’s broadcast has stopped for everyone.
Check the encoder and the video and audio sources
YouTube recommends checking encoder status before assuming the internet connection is at fault. Follow the video signal from its source through the encoder to the stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Update the encoder software. Confirm that the software is current, then look for error messages when the stream starts or drops.
- Inspect the encoder preview. If the preview freezes, breaks up or loses sound, investigate the camera, audio feed, routing or encoder load. The problem may be present before the signal reaches YouTube.
- Check CPU load. High load can interfere with encoding. Close unnecessary applications or reduce the encoding workload if the encoder is struggling.
- Review a local recording. Check whether the archived file has the same audio or video fault. A defect in the recording points toward the source or local encoding path; a healthy recording with a disrupted YouTube stream makes the outgoing connection worth checking next.
If the encoder preview and local recording look healthy but YouTube playback is disrupted, test the church’s outbound internet connection. YouTube advises contacting the internet service provider if a connection test finds a problem; if the issue continues, report it to YouTube. For software that signs in to YouTube directly rather than using a stream key, YouTube directs users to the software vendor’s support team.
Measure upload capacity and leave room for variation
A church sends its live video outward, so download speed alone is not the relevant measure. Run an upload speed test from the same location and network used by the encoder, preferably under conditions similar to service time. A result from another room, another connection or a quiet time of day may not reflect the capacity available during the broadcast.

YouTube’s streaming tips say that total outgoing stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommend leaving 20% headroom. The available upload capacity can also be reduced when other people or devices share the connection. Account for every outgoing stream, including a backup stream if the setup sends one; do not compare only the primary encoder’s bitrate with the internet plan’s advertised speed.
If upload capacity is unstable or too close to the total bitrate, reduce competing network use during the service, test a wired connection if the encoder currently uses Wi-Fi, or lower the stream’s resolution or bitrate. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is one optional way to test a wired connection; it is not a guaranteed fix for a fault whose cause has not been identified.

Choose encoder settings that fit the connection
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance varies by codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264, the undated current recommendations include these examples:
| H.264 video setting | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s encoder-setting guidance, not a diagnosis or a guarantee that a particular church connection will be stable. Use YouTube’s full table for other codec, resolution or frame-rate combinations rather than extrapolating from these examples. If the measured upload connection cannot reliably support the current setting with headroom, test a lower resolution or bitrate and check the result in Live Control Room.

YouTube recommends CBR encoding and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. It also recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Check that the encoder’s protocol and settings match YouTube’s current guidance and the configuration supported by the encoder.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reset a stream key only when the error points to it
A stream-key issue is relevant when a third-party encoder reports an error starting the stream. In that case, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends creating a new stream key and updating the encoder with it. Do not reset the key as a general response to every interruption during a service; a mid-stream drop may instead involve the connection, encoder or source.

You can review stream keys and related live-stream options in YouTube’s live stream settings guidance. If the encoder connects by signing in directly and does not use a stream key, contact that software’s support team for its connection-specific troubleshooting.
Rehearse the whole service setup and test a fallback
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use rehearsal time to test the complete path from the church’s sources through the encoder to YouTube.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before the service.
- Confirm the stream can be opened from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.
- Verify that the local archive file is growing.
- Monitor stream quality while the test is running, not just at the moment it starts.
- If using a backup encoder, rehearse failover: YouTube describes stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup.
Perform a failover test during rehearsal, not in the middle of a service with an unsuspecting audience. A fallback that has never been tested may not be ready when the primary stream fails.
Common symptoms and the next check
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Only one viewer reports an error | Ask whether the operator and other viewers can reproduce it; check the affected viewer’s device and connection. |
| Viewers on the same network report trouble | Investigate that shared network and whether competing use is affecting it. |
| Viewers on different networks report the same problem | Inspect encoder errors, preview, CPU load, local recording and Live Control Room stream health. |
| Encoder preview or local recording is faulty | Check camera and audio sources, routing, encoder load and software version. |
| Encoder and local recording look healthy, but YouTube playback is disrupted | Measure outbound upload capacity from the encoder’s network; contact the ISP if a connection test finds a problem. |
| Third-party encoder reports an error starting | Check the stream key and, if appropriate, create a new one and update the encoder. |
| Problem persists after these checks | Report the issue to YouTube, or contact the encoder vendor if the software connects directly without a stream key. |
