How to Make a 24/7 Sleep-Sounds Stream on YouTube with Separate Audio and Video

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can build a 24/7 YouTube sleep-sounds stream in OBS by looping a visual file and adding your sleep audio as a separate source. Connect OBS to YouTube Live with your stream URL and private stream key, then check that both files keep playing together. The trade-off is that your computer, power, internet connection and local files must remain available while you stream.

What you need before you start

  • OBS Studio and a visual file to show during the stream.
  • A separate sleep-sounds audio file in a format supported by OBS Media Source, such as MP3, AAC, OGG or WAV. OBS Media Source also supports video files including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. See the OBS Project media-source documentation.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
  • A computer and internet connection capable of staying on and sending the stream for as long as you need it.

Use only sound and visuals you are authorized to stream. A file that plays locally is not automatically cleared for a public broadcast or archived replay.

Set up separate looping video and audio in OBS

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the sleep-sounds broadcast. Name it so it is easy to identify if you later add other scenes.
  2. Add the visual file. In the Sources panel, choose + and select Media Source. Create or select a source, then browse to the visual file. Enable Loop in the source properties. If the visual is a sequence of files, choose VLC Video Source, create a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; the OBS documentation specifies matching 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
  3. Add the audio as its own source. Choose + and add another Media Source, then select the sleep-sounds file. Configure that source’s playback and looping behavior for your intended setup. OBS supports common audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV.
  4. Arrange and check the scene. Confirm the visual fills the canvas as intended and that the audio source is audible in OBS. Preview the complete scene long enough to verify that both files start and continue through their loops. Also check behavior after switching scenes or restarting OBS. Separate sources are independently configured; OBS documentation does not guarantee that their loops will stay synchronized or restart in lockstep.
  5. Keep source files available. Leave the files at stable paths and avoid moving or renaming them while OBS is configured to use them. A local stream depends on OBS being able to read those files continuously.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast you want to use.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key provided there into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes the key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and enables YouTube to accept it; keep it private and reset it if you believe it has been exposed. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  3. Start streaming in OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast. Confirm that the intended image and audio reach YouTube, not just the local OBS preview.
  4. Monitor the broadcast after it starts. A local setup relies on the computer, power, network, upload connection and media files remaining available. Prevent automatic sleep or shutdown if the stream is meant to continue, and have a plan to notice and respond to interruptions.

Plan for replays and long-running broadcasts

YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours. It warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, keep a local recording backup and plan deliberately around this threshold. A restart can create a separate broadcast; do not promise viewers that a single watch page will remain uninterrupted across separate broadcasts. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

YouTube distinguishes a broadcast, which is an event or video, from a stream, the audio-video feed sent to YouTube. Its API guide illustrates a 24/7 feed continuing while a separate broadcast is created for a subset event, but that example does not establish automatic 24/7 session management for every creator. See YouTube’s broadcast life-cycle guide.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide use of live content on Google services, including music rights from artists, labels, publishers and other participants. The content must also comply with Community Guidelines and applicable laws. Use original, licensed or otherwise authorized sound and visuals, and check that permission covers live streaming, territories and any replay you intend to keep. YouTube’s terms are at YouTube Terms of Service.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A detected match can lead to a placeholder image, warning, interruption or termination. Even licensed third-party material may require the channel to be added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. Keep license records and confirm any required allowlisting before going live. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright issues.

Local OBS or cloud playout?

OBS gives you direct control over source composition and scenes, but your computer and connection are part of the broadcast infrastructure. A hosted playout service can run prepared files without keeping your personal computer online; confirm the provider’s current storage, stream limits, platform support, restart behavior, cost and rights requirements before choosing. Vendor descriptions are not independent evidence of uptime.

For a YouTube-only cloud option, StreamNeo is #1 to consider: it runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • No audio reaches YouTube: Check that the audio source is enabled and audible in OBS, then confirm the Live Control Room preview. Make sure the selected source points to the intended file.
  • The visual or audio stops at the end: Reopen the relevant Media Source properties and verify its loop setting. For a playlist, verify that it is a VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist enabled and that VLC is installed.
  • A source becomes unavailable after restarting OBS: Check whether the file was moved, renamed or placed on storage that is no longer connected. Update the source path and preview the scene again.
  • Audio and video drift or restart at different times: Separate sources are not documented as synchronizing their loops in lockstep. Test the complete scene for the intended duration and adjust the media arrangement if the mismatch is unacceptable; do not assume the sources will self-correct.
  • YouTube shows a copyright warning or interrupts the stream: Review the matched material, verify the rights for live use and replay, and check whether the rights owner requires Content ID allowlisting. Do not restart with the same disputed material until you have resolved the rights issue.
  • The replay is missing after a long broadcast: YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording backup and design any restart or archive plan before the stream reaches that threshold.
  • The stream goes offline when you leave: In a local OBS setup, check power, sleep settings, internet stability, OBS status and file availability. If you do not want a home computer and connection to be dependencies, consider cloud playout.
