You can run a 24/7 YouTube music stream with OBS if your computer, power and internet connection can stay available, your upload speed can sustain the chosen bitrate, and you have the rights to broadcast every track. Set up a YouTube broadcast in Live Control Room, connect OBS with a private stream key, test the stream at the actual location, and plan for YouTube’s archive limit: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
What you need before starting
A continuous OBS stream depends on more than a fast speed-test result. The streaming computer must keep encoding and sending video, the connection must remain stable to YouTube’s ingest server, and the audio must be cleared for live use and any replay. In India, service quality, routing, power and plan terms vary by address, so there is no single upload-speed threshold that can be recommended for every creator.
- A computer capable of running OBS continuously, connected to a reliable network.
- A YouTube channel with live-streaming access enabled. Complete any activation steps YouTube Studio currently presents before your planned launch; eligibility and activation prompts can change.
- A music playlist and visual that you have permission to use in the livestream and, if relevant, its archive.
- Enough sustained upload capacity for the selected video bitrate, plus headroom for normal connection variation and other household traffic.
- A plan for power, network or encoder interruptions, and a separate archive if preserving the complete program matters.
How to stream music 24/7 on YouTube with OBS
1. Create the YouTube broadcast and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule a broadcast and choose the encoder workflow so YouTube provides the connection details.
- In the stream settings, use RTMPS where available. It is YouTube’s encrypted extension to RTMP.
- Copy the stream key into OBS only through OBS’s streaming configuration. Treat it like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Do not show it in screen captures or publish it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Leave Live Control Room open so you can see the incoming preview and stream-health indicators when OBS connects.
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS delivery, CBR, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. For the simplest broadly supported setup, choose H.264 video with AAC audio.
2. Measure upload capacity where the stream will run
- At the streaming computer and intended location, run several upload tests at different times, including the time of day the broadcast will usually be live. Look for a stable sustained result, not just the best single reading.
- Check your local ISP plan terms for sustained-upload, data-use or fair-use conditions. Ask the provider about the specific service address if those terms are unclear.
- Choose an output bitrate comfortably below the upload capacity that remains stable in your tests. Leave room for ordinary household use and variation; if the selected bitrate consumes nearly all available upload, small changes can cause dropped frames or a disconnect.
- Where practical, connect the PC to the router with Ethernet rather than relying on Wi-Fi. This is a practical setup preference, not a YouTube or India-specific requirement.
YouTube advises creators to choose a quality that can produce a reliable stream on their internet connection and to test with realistic audio and motion. Its published encoder settings specify stream bitrates, not a guaranteed ISP speed for Indian households. Your connection’s route to YouTube, congestion, plan limits and local conditions matter, so validate the actual path instead of treating a national speed figure as a guarantee.

3. Set OBS video, output and audio
In OBS, open Settings > Video and choose a canvas and output resolution that suit the visual and the tested connection. For a static album cover or gentle visualizer, 30 fps is generally a sensible starting point; use 60 fps only if the visual needs it and the connection can sustain the added load. Do not upscale a small source just to select a larger output.
Then open Settings > Output, select the Streaming section, and use Advanced output mode if needed to expose encoder controls. Select an H.264 encoder available on your system, set rate control to CBR, and match the bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen resolution and frame rate. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Encoder names and hardware availability differ by computer, so select an H.264 option your machine can run stably.
| Output target | YouTube recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, not minimum ISP speeds or guarantees of uninterrupted service. Match the row to the actual resolution and frame rate rather than borrowing a bitrate from a different output. YouTube’s H.265 and AV1 tables use minimum and maximum ranges rather than the same H.264 recommendation column; do not mix those values. Check YouTube’s live encoder guidance before launch in case its recommendations change.
For audio, use AAC or MP3. YouTube lists 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps for stereo audio. In OBS, verify the active audio source and mixer meter, and avoid clipping. If the music player is captured through desktop audio, mute alerts and unrelated system sounds; a dedicated media source or controlled audio routing reduces the risk of notification sounds reaching the stream.

4. Build a loop that OBS can sustain
Add the artwork or other permitted visual in an OBS scene, then add the music source. A media source can play a file or playlist depending on the source configuration; enable looping where appropriate and verify the transition from the last item back to the first. For a continuous playlist, check that every file is readable and that transitions do not leave long silences or unexpectedly expose another desktop window.
Set the scene and audio levels, then keep the production simple enough to recover if something fails. A static image is less demanding than animated graphics, but encoding still consumes computer resources continuously. Disable sleep and automatic shutdown for the streaming computer, and check that planned operating-system updates or restarts will not interrupt the broadcast. Do not assume OBS will resume correctly after a reboot without testing that exact recovery path.
5. Test privately and watch stream health
- Connect OBS to YouTube using the stream key and start with a private or unlisted test broadcast.
- Use the same audio processing, visual movement, scene transitions, output settings and network path intended for the public stream.
- Listen for clipping, silence, unexpected desktop sounds and sync problems. Check the OBS status area for dropped frames or disconnections, and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health status.
- Let the test run long enough to expose instability rather than relying on a brief successful connection. If you change bitrate, resolution or frame rate, repeat the test with that combination.
- Only make the broadcast public or start the scheduled program once the preview and audio are correct.
OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of a network issue between the computer and the ingest server. Its troubleshooting guidance also notes that firewall or security software can interfere with the connection. If the test shows recurring trouble, reduce output bitrate or resolution, inspect the PC-to-router link and security software, and contact the ISP about the service path instead of repeatedly restarting at the same settings.
How much upload speed do you need in India?
There is no verified India-wide upload-speed number that guarantees a 24/7 YouTube stream. Start with the bitrate for your chosen YouTube output, then confirm that your location can sustain it with headroom. For example, YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 30 fps is 10 Mbps of video bitrate; that does not mean a plan advertised at 10 Mbps upload is sufficient, because the encoder needs a stable path and other traffic or variation can consume capacity.

For an Indian connection, check the actual upload at the installation address over multiple periods, confirm data and fair-use conditions, and test to YouTube through the same router and computer you will use live. A speed test measures a moment and destination, not a promise that the YouTube ingest path will remain stable all day. If OBS shows dropped frames, lower the bitrate first and test again; a smaller stable stream is generally more useful than a higher-quality stream that repeatedly stalls.
Keep the computer, power and connection running
OBS is a do-it-yourself, on-premises setup: the computer and network path at your location are part of the broadcast. For unattended operation, decide who or what will notice and respond to a stopped stream, power loss, internet outage, encoder crash or YouTube rights warning. A UPS sized for the PC and router, or a backup internet path, can be considered as resilience measures, but neither guarantees 24/7 uptime. Match any backup to the actual equipment and likely interruption you are trying to cover.
For a long-running setup, check OBS and YouTube status periodically, keep the computer’s cooling and storage in good condition, and test your recovery procedure before relying on it. OBS may report dropped frames when the network path is unstable; if the encoder itself is overloaded, simplify scenes or reduce the output workload and verify again. Avoid assuming that a stream will restart itself after every kind of failure.
Can YouTube archive a 24-hour livestream?
Do not rely on YouTube to produce a complete archive of one 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours may be automatically archived, and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If a dependable replay matters, keep a local recording and plan shorter scheduled broadcasts rather than assuming one continuous day-long stream will become a complete YouTube VOD. Confirm that your channel’s current workflow supports the transitions you plan; YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a universal restart cadence.

A local recording also gives you a copy if the platform archive is incomplete or unavailable, but it needs enough disk space and its own monitoring. Check the recording after a test, including that the audio is present and that the file can be opened. If local preservation is essential, plan storage around the length and format of the recording rather than treating the YouTube archive as your only copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you play copyrighted or royalty-free music in a YouTube livestream?
Only use music for which you have rights covering the specific broadcast and replay. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the creator to have necessary rights, including music rights. Its live copyright checks scan streams for third-party content, and a match can lead to replacement audio, interruption or termination of the broadcast.
Before adding a track, check the written terms for each relevant use:
- Live transmission, not just ordinary uploaded videos.
- Archived VOD or replay, if the stream will be saved or recorded for viewers.
- Monetization, territories and the particular YouTube channel.
- Continuous playback, playlists, edits, visualizers or other intended presentation.
- Any Content ID allowlisting requirement or process.
“Royalty-free,” a free download, buying a track, or having a license for standard YouTube videos does not by itself establish permission for a continuous livestream and its archive. YouTube says a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel. The owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; YouTube’s wording is: “If your channel isn’t added to their allowlist, your live stream can be interrupted even if you’ve licensed the content.” Keep license records and confirm any allowlisting before going live.

YouTube identifies its Audio Library as a source of copyright-safe music, but check the applicable terms for each track and the use you intend. A description stating that music is royalty-free does not prevent Content ID detection. Creator Music licensing and revenue-sharing tracks are not available for live streams under YouTube’s guidance, so they are not a solution to livestream licensing; YouTube says expansion beyond US creators in the YouTube Partner Program is pending.
Will a 24/7 music stream be monetized?
Continuous uptime does not guarantee YouTube Partner Program approval or revenue. YouTube applies monetization policies to livestreams as well as other formats. Its July 15, 2025 policy notice clarified “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and describes repetitive or mass-produced output as ineligible; reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement. YouTube’s examples include collections of songs from different artists that can violate reused-content policy even when the creator has permission to use them.
Music rights and monetization eligibility answer different questions: permission may resolve a copyright issue, but it does not establish that a channel offers enough original value for monetization. Original compositions, meaningful curation, distinctive visuals or commentary can contribute to a channel’s own creative value, but none guarantees approval. Review the current YouTube monetization policies for the channel as a whole before investing in a format on the assumption it will earn revenue.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| OBS shows dropped frames or repeated disconnects | Unstable or insufficient network path to the ingest server | Lower bitrate or resolution, check the local link and router, test wired Ethernet, and investigate firewall/security software or the ISP path. |
| YouTube receives no signal | Wrong or exposed stream key, incorrect connection setup, or a blocked connection | Confirm the key and server details in YouTube Studio and OBS; replace a key if it was exposed; check security software and the OBS connection status. |
| Stream connects but looks unstable or buffers | Bitrate too high for sustained upload, or encoder/network load | Use the matching YouTube bitrate guidance, reduce output demand and repeat a realistic test from the intended location. |
| Audio is silent, clipped or has alerts mixed in | Wrong OBS source, unsuitable mixer level or uncontrolled desktop audio | Check the active source and meters, listen during a test, lower levels that clip, and mute unrelated system sounds. |
| A track is muted or the stream is interrupted | Third-party content detection or missing channel allowlisting | Verify the license covers live and replay use, contact the rights owner about allowlisting, and remove content without confirmed rights. |
| The 24-hour broadcast has no complete YouTube archive | The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance | Keep local recordings and structure future broadcasts as shorter sessions if archive availability matters. |
| Broadcast stops after a power or computer event | OBS or the network device lost power or did not recover as expected | Check power and restart behavior in a controlled test; consider a correctly sized UPS or backup connection as optional safeguards. |
