Leave room for the operating system and monitoring, then check peak memory and stream stability under a representative workload. If the VPS runs OBS, builds scenes, applies filters, renders browser overlays, or transcodes video, measure that actual workload before choosing an instance: CPU, GPU support, and network capacity may matter as much as or more than RAM.
Why the relay-versus-processing distinction matters
Forwarding an existing stream
In FFmpeg, stream copy forwards input packets without decoding or encoding them. That makes it suitable for a simple relay or some container changes, but it cannot apply frame filters. For this kind of setup, 2 GB is a practical test size rather than a published requirement. Check memory use instead of assuming the number will fit every operating system, monitoring stack, or relay configuration. FFmpeg documentation
Rendering or transcoding video
Transcoding decodes and re-encodes video, which FFmpeg describes as computationally expensive in most cases. OBS also uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes; more sources, filters, browser sources, and complex scenes increase the workload. Resolution and frame rate affect rendering and encoding performance too. A VPS that processes video therefore needs workload-specific testing, and more RAM by itself may not solve a CPU or GPU bottleneck. OBS encoding troubleshooting
How to size and test the VPS
- Define the job. Establish whether the VPS will only relay an encoded feed or will run OBS, render scenes, filter frames, or transcode. Include the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, sources, filters, and destination in the plan.
- For a simple relay, start with a modest test instance. Two GB of RAM is a reasonable initial estimate for testing a stream-copy relay, not a guaranteed minimum. Reserve headroom for the operating system and monitoring.
- Run a representative test. Observe peak memory, CPU, network throughput, and whether the stream drops or reconnects. Test for a period that reflects the workload you expect to run continuously; a short idle check cannot establish how the live service will behave.
- Scale for the measured bottleneck. If you process video, test the actual scene and encoding workload. OBS notes that CPU requirements vary substantially with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity, and that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee streaming will work. Hardware encoders can shift work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component when supported, but confirm that the chosen VPS exposes a suitable encoder rather than assuming it does. - Plan for operations. Set a monitoring and restart/reconnect approach that matches the observed workload and your reliability needs. The cited guidance does not establish a guaranteed RAM buffer or continuous-uptime target.
