What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If audio gradually falls further out of sync with video during a long ambient YouTube livestream, first determine whether the mismatch is already present in the encoder or local recording, or appears only in YouTube playback. Then check OBS and active audio-device sample rates, inspect stream health and encoder errors, and retest long enough to compare sync near the beginning and later in the run. A fixed offset needs a different diagnosis from drift that accumulates over time.
First distinguish a fixed offset from accumulating drift
Compare a recognizable sound and its matching visual near the beginning of the stream with the same kind of cue later. If the audio is displaced by roughly the same amount both times, the problem is more consistent with a fixed sync offset. If the gap grows as the stream continues, investigate sample-rate or clock consistency, changes in the source, and the encoder path.
This comparison is a diagnostic starting point, not a formal YouTube threshold. YouTube’s latency guidance describes capture-to-playback delay, not a test for cumulative drift: YouTube’s live-stream latency options.
Trace where the mismatch first appears
Compare the program at successive points in the chain: the audio and video being sent by the encoder, a local recording or archive if your setup makes one, and the resulting YouTube playback. This helps separate a source or encoder problem from an issue that appears later in streaming or playback.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Already out of sync in the encoder output: investigate the routed audio and video sources, active devices, and encoder condition.
- In sync in the encoder or local archive but out of sync on YouTube: check stream health, encoder messages, and the outbound connection before changing source timing.
- No local recording available: use the encoder preview or output and YouTube playback as comparison points; avoid assuming the cause based on playback alone.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the sources routed to the encoder, encoder condition and CPU load, a local archive, and the outbound internet connection: Troubleshoot live-streaming issues.
Check OBS and audio-device sample rates
If you use OBS, compare its audio sample-rate setting with the format used by every active audio device in the stream. Pay particular attention to setups with multiple devices, since a mismatch between formats is one plausible cause to test. An OBS community support discussion describes mismatched device sample rates as a possible source of drift over time or distortion; that is a troubleshooting lead, not proof that every long-stream sync problem has the same cause: OBS community discussion of audio going out of sync after a few hours.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound. It also recommends audio bitrates of 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1 surround. These are encoder recommendations, not a guaranteed cure for drift: YouTube live encoder settings. YouTube’s stream-error guidance also flags incorrect audio sample rates and channel counts: Fix live-stream errors.
Monitor stream health and encoder messages
Before changing several settings at once, check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and note any warnings or errors. Test the setup before going live, then monitor health messages during the stream. YouTube also advises checking audio and video quality continuously: YouTube live-streaming tips and encoder and stream-health guidance.

- Record what the stream health panel reports when the mismatch is noticed.
- Review the encoder’s own status and error messages, including CPU load and whether the intended sources are routed to it.
- Compare the encoder output, local recording if available, and YouTube playback to see where the mismatch begins.
- Change one relevant setting at a time, then repeat the comparison. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped.
Do not treat latency as a drift correction
YouTube defines latency as the time between capture and playback for viewers. Lower-latency options can increase buffering; normal latency is described as suitable for non-interactive streams. An ambient stream is generally non-interactive, so normal latency may be appropriate when viewer interaction is not time-sensitive. Changing latency affects delay and buffering trade-offs; YouTube does not document it as a repair for audio/video drift that accumulates over time. See YouTube’s latency options.
Retest long enough to expose the problem
A brief test may look synchronized even when the mismatch emerges only later. After a change, compare a section near the beginning with a later section under the conditions in which the problem normally occurs. YouTube recommends testing a stream, but does not prescribe a specific test duration for cumulative audio drift; choose a run long enough to make the early-versus-late comparison meaningful rather than relying on an arbitrary fixed number of minutes.

Common symptoms and what to check
| What you notice | What to investigate |
|---|---|
| Audio is offset by about the same amount throughout | Look for a fixed source delay or sync offset rather than treating it as accumulating drift. |
| The mismatch grows during the run | Check sample-rate consistency across OBS and active audio devices, and compare encoder output with local recording and YouTube playback. |
| Encoder or local recording looks right, but YouTube playback does not | Review stream health, encoder messages, and the outbound connection. |
| Warnings mention audio format or channel configuration | Verify the live encoder’s sample rate and channel count against the intended audio setup. |
| Sync changes after switching latency options | Remember that latency settings trade capture-to-playback delay against buffering; they are not documented as a cumulative-drift fix. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your ambient stream uses uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video, supports any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This changes where the stream runs; it does not diagnose or guarantee a fix for sync issues in your source files.
