To keep a YouTube broadcast running while its cloud host is maintained, prepare and test a separate backup encoder or managed encoding path before the maintenance window. A provider’s live migration can reduce disruption to a supported VM, but it does not guarantee continuous video delivery to YouTube. Confirm the handoff in the YouTube player and monitor stream health—not just the VM.
Choose a backup path before the maintenance window
Your backup must be independent of the host being maintained and correctly configured for the intended YouTube event. A second VM alone is not failover: the encoder, event destination, stream credentials, network path, and handoff behavior all need to work together.
- Self-managed backup VM: gives you control over the encoder and handoff, but you are responsible for configuration, monitoring, and rehearsal. Keep it separate from the primary VM and avoid sharing a single critical dependency that maintenance could interrupt.
- Managed cloud encoding or broadcast service: can reduce the amount of infrastructure you operate. Check YouTube event compatibility, failover behavior, monitoring, latency, bandwidth, and cost for your specific workflow; a service being listed among YouTube-verified encoders does not establish a failover guarantee.

Prepare the YouTube event and both encoders
- Identify the exact maintenance event. Check the affected VM, provider notice, host-maintenance policy, machine type, storage/root-volume setup, and any configuration limits. Do not assume all provider maintenance is transparent.
- Set up the backup encoder and destination. Configure it for the intended YouTube event using the encoder’s supported connection method. YouTube describes stream keys as connection credentials; store them securely and keep them out of logs and public scripts. The exact setup and handoff depend on the encoder and whether the event uses RTMP or HLS.
- Check capacity for both feeds. If your design sends primary and backup feeds simultaneously, verify that the network can carry both. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom and says to count the primary plus backup bitrate in the calculation (YouTube streaming tips).
- Preview and rehearse. Start the encoders as appropriate for the scheduled event, preview in YouTube Live Control Room, then stop the primary encoder and verify that the player rolls over to the backup. YouTube’s failover test guidance explicitly recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming the player switches.
- Check the viewer-facing result. Confirm the watch page is accessible, stream health is acceptable, and both audio and video continue through the handoff. YouTube recommends previewing the stream and monitoring health; a running VM is not proof that viewers are receiving a good feed (YouTube encoder settings guidance).
- Verify your archive. If you are keeping a local recording, confirm that it is actually growing before the maintenance window.
Use provider maintenance behavior as one layer, not the whole plan
Google Cloud Compute Engine
Supported VMs configured with a migrate host-maintenance policy can move to another host. Google says minimum disruption is typically much less than one second, while also warning that disk, CPU, memory, or network performance can briefly decrease. Some machine types and configurations—including VMs with GPUs and other listed configurations—do not support live migration. Check the current live migration documentation for the exact VM and settings before relying on it.

For supported VMs set to migrate, Google documents a maintenance metadata notice 60 seconds before migration, subject to conditions: the metadata key must have been queried since the last migration. That short, conditional notice may help trigger a response, but is not a substitute for a tested backup (Google Cloud maintenance notices).
AWS EC2
AWS distinguishes network maintenance, which can briefly interrupt connectivity, from power maintenance, which can take an instance offline and reboot it. Available actions depend on the scheduled event and instance configuration; AWS describes options including waiting, stop/start for eligible EBS-root instances, or launching a replacement for instance-store-root cases. Review the actual event and current EC2 scheduled maintenance guidance rather than applying one blanket action.

Run the maintenance handoff carefully
- Watch provider event notices and monitor the primary and backup encoder processes, resource use, and network state.
- Confirm that the backup is healthy under the handoff method you rehearsed before moving or stopping the primary.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room and the public watch page during the change. Use viewer-facing audio and video, plus YouTube stream health, to judge continuity.
After maintenance, avoid an unnecessary second transition
Confirm that the primary VM and encoder have recovered. If the backup is carrying a stable program, decide whether to fail back during the live event or leave the backup active until it ends; an unnecessary second handoff adds risk. Afterwards, review stream health, logs, and archive integrity, and record the actual failover time and any observed gap for the next rehearsal.
