YouTube documents encoder-based streaming with a stream URL and stream key, and recommends RTMPS. Running that encoder on a VM is a practical architecture assembled from those documented components, not a turnkey Google service or a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Whether it is affordable or available for your chosen configuration in India requires checking current region, VM, and network pricing.
Which Google Cloud option can send a stream to YouTube?
Compute Engine VM with an encoder
This is the clearest route for the question. YouTube accepts a feed from an encoder configured with YouTube’s ingest address and stream key. A Compute Engine VM can host the encoder and prerecorded media, then send the feed to YouTube. The combination is an architectural inference; the reviewed Google Cloud information does not describe it as a managed, one-click YouTube relay.
For continuous operation, you must arrange the media loop, keep the encoder process running, recover it after a failure, monitor the stream, and secure the stream key. Neither the VM nor this design guarantees 24/7 uptime.
Google Cloud Live Stream API
This is a different workflow. Google describes the Live Stream API as accepting live SRT or RTMP input and producing HLS or DASH outputs saved to Cloud Storage. The reviewed product overview does not document publishing those outputs directly to YouTube. Do not treat the API as a direct YouTube destination; a separate publishing or relay component may be needed.

How to set up a VM-based prerecorded stream
These steps describe the architecture, not a tested deployment recipe. Exact VM settings, encoder commands, and bitrate depend on your file, desired output, current Google Cloud availability, and YouTube’s current encoder guidance; the information available here does not establish universal values for them.
- Check the channel first. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Confirm that the channel can go live before paying for cloud resources.
- Choose a Compute Engine VM and region. Confirm in current Google Cloud documentation and pricing tools that your required machine type is available in the region you intend to use. For an India-based operation, verify the actual region and configuration rather than assuming a particular location or price.
- Make the video available to the VM. Store or transfer the prerecorded file where the encoder can read it. Check that the VM has enough storage and that the media remains accessible for the full run.
- Install and configure an encoder. Set its input to the prerecorded video and configure it to keep sending a feed for the intended duration. Set the output to YouTube’s ingest URL and use RTMPS, which YouTube recommends. Follow YouTube’s current encoder instructions for resolution, bitrate, and other output settings; there is no single evidence-supported setting for every source file and channel.
- Copy the stream key securely. Enter the key in the encoder’s stream configuration. Treat it as a password: anyone who obtains it could transmit to that stream. Do not put it in public scripts, logs, or shared configuration.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Confirm that the encoder is sending and that YouTube receives the feed before leaving the VM unattended. Check both the video and audio, not just that a process appears to be running.
- Design for recovery and monitoring. Continuous operation needs process supervision, encoder restart, monitoring, and a plan for network interruptions and media access failures. These are engineering requirements to plan for, not uptime features guaranteed by Google Cloud or YouTube.
- Estimate the recurring bill before launch. Include VM compute, storage, and outbound internet traffic at your chosen bitrate and operating hours. Validate the VM’s outbound capacity and current egress charges; calculate costs for any redundancy separately.
What YouTube access, copyright, and monetization rules mean
Being able to connect does not make every stream eligible
YouTube requires the channel to be verified and free of live-stream restrictions during the prior 90 days. Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and YouTube can restrict a channel’s ability to livestream.

You need rights for the content and territories
YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for rights and legal compliance. They state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Owning a video file by itself may not establish rights to its music, footage, performances, or use in every territory.
Content ID can interrupt even a licensed stream
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder; if the material continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A licensed stream can still be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID.

Monetization review is a separate question
On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified that its former “repetitious content” policy is named “inauthentic content” and covers repetitive or mass-produced material. The policy applies to live streams. Repeating a stream does not automatically make a channel ineligible, but monetization review considers whether the actual content is original, materially varied, and valuable to viewers.
What to check about cost and 24/7 reliability in India
A 24/7 VM incurs ongoing compute and networking costs, and the amount depends on the selected machine, region, bitrate, and traffic. The available information does not establish a current India-specific region choice, VM configuration, or total monthly cost for an individual stream. Check current Google Cloud availability and pricing for your exact configuration, then calculate outbound traffic using your bitrate and hours online. Do not apply Live Stream API pricing to a Compute Engine VM encoder: the API’s pricing is based on active-channel time and input/output resolution, with each distribution stream charged as an additional output.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. That is an archive detail, not evidence that streams longer than 12 hours are prohibited or that a 24-hour stream will be archived. Plan separately for whether you need an archive and verify YouTube’s current behavior for your broadcast.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that the encoder is using the YouTube ingest address and the correct stream key, and that the channel is eligible to go live.
- The stream stops when unattended: Check whether the encoder process exited, the VM restarted, the media became inaccessible, or the network connection failed. Add supervision, monitoring, and a recovery plan rather than assuming the VM will keep the process alive.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: Check for third-party content matches and whether you have the necessary rights. If you have a license, ask the rights owner about allowlisting your channel in Content ID.
- The stream runs but costs more than expected: Recalculate compute, storage, and outbound traffic using actual operating hours and bitrate. Check the current egress charges and VM pricing for the selected region and machine type.
- The broadcast ends without the archive you expected: Do not infer archiving for a stream longer than 12 hours from YouTube’s under-12-hour archive statement. Verify current archive behavior and plan for a separate recording if needed.
