For a prerecorded video looping to YouTube from an Indian VPS, start with H.264 video, AAC stereo audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Set resolution and bitrate to YouTube’s recommendations, then verify that the VPS can encode the video and sustain the upload. RTMPS is preferable when supported by the installed FFmpeg build and selected YouTube ingest endpoint. These settings are a starting point—not a promise that a particular VPS or network route will stay up continuously.
Recommended YouTube settings by resolution
YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations are platform guidance, not independent VPS performance measurements. Select a format your source, encoder, and outbound connection can sustain; a lower reliable setting is preferable to a higher setting that repeatedly drops frames.
| Output | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Its general encoder guidance calls for progressive video, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection in transit. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
FFmpeg command for a prerecorded video loop
This template reads an MP4 at real-time speed, loops it indefinitely, encodes 720p30-compatible H.264 at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps example rate, and encodes stereo AAC. It does not resize or otherwise normalize the source video, so check the actual output format before relying on the command.

-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
The 60-frame GOP at 30 fps corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval. The output container and destination URL form must match the selected ingest endpoint and your FFmpeg build. Replace the example destination with the exact stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, logs, and shell history. YouTube explains where to manage stream settings and credentials in Manage live stream settings.
Choose the bitrate and frame rate your VPS can sustain
The command’s 8 Mbps video rate is an example for 720p30, not a universal setting. For 1080p30, use YouTube’s 14 Mbps H.264 recommendation only if the source, CPU, and VPS egress can sustain it. If not, step down to a supported format such as 720p30. YouTube advises choosing a reliable quality for the available connection, testing upload speed, testing representative motion and audio, and checking stream health.

Do not assume that setting a bitrate makes an input conform to a resolution or frame rate. Confirm the encoded output’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, particularly if you use stream copy rather than re-encoding. The example uses libx264 to encode; CPU capacity and the selected preset affect whether a VPS can keep up.
When not to use -re
-re controls how quickly FFmpeg reads an input and is appropriate here for a prerecorded file being sent in real time. If the input is an actual live capture or live network stream, do not add it blindly: FFmpeg cautions against using low read rates with real-time capture inputs. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the installed version and input type.

Recovering from a temporary output failure
A basic FFmpeg process may exit after a publishing failure. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can continue real-time processing and attempt output recovery after temporary failures. This example illustrates the documented recovery options; it still needs to be configured and tested for the actual input, output, FFmpeg version, and bitrate.
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
"$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
FFmpeg documents this FIFO pattern as an attempt to recover from temporary output failures, retrying after a wait. It does not guarantee that YouTube will preserve one uninterrupted public event after a disconnect, and it does not replace process supervision, monitoring, or testing. Protocol reconnect options may also be available, but applicability depends on the protocol and build. See FFmpeg’s formats and muxer documentation and protocol documentation.

What an Indian VPS does—and does not—tell you
The relevant platform settings do not establish an India-specific bitrate, ingest address, best provider, or route quality. A server’s location alone does not prove that its connection to YouTube can sustain a stream. Before committing to a 24/7 workload, verify the provider’s actual service terms and test the selected server and route to YouTube.
- Confirm sustained outbound capacity and any data or traffic limits.
- Check CPU capacity under the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and preset.
- Review provider terms for continuous streaming and any applicable network restrictions.
- Understand what happens during maintenance, restart, or network interruption.
- Run a real test from that VPS to YouTube and inspect stream health; do not infer reliability from a speed test alone.
VPS providers cannot be ranked on these criteria without provider-specific terms and measurement evidence.

Setup and monitoring checklist
- Verify that the YouTube channel is eligible to live stream, then create or configure the stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the current stream URL and key from the stream settings and protect the key as a credential.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate that the VPS can encode and upload reliably.
- Configure the matching YouTube bitrate recommendation, supported codecs, stereo audio settings, CBR, and two-second keyframes.
- Test with representative movement and audio before making the stream public; review the Live Control Room preview.
- Monitor YouTube stream health and messages, playback quality, FFmpeg process status, CPU, network, and disk space if recording locally.
- Test recovery deliberately and check how the stream returns in Live Control Room.
YouTube advises testing before going live, monitoring stream health and messages, checking the preview, and continuing to monitor audio and video quality. Its live streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.
