Start by finding out whether the problem is a fixed offset, drift that grows over time, or a sync jump at each loop boundary. Those symptoms have different causes, so there is no reliable one-flag fix. Probe the source timestamps, check that each input loops as intended, test the joins, then validate a private or unlisted YouTube stream over time.
Identify what kind of sync problem you have
Watch and listen near the start of a test stream, after a longer interval, and immediately after a loop boundary. Record whether the audio-video relationship changes, and when. This is a diagnostic distinction, not proof of a particular cause; the input files and logs are needed to identify the actual fault.
| Observed symptom | What to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Audio is consistently early or late by roughly the same amount | A fixed initial alignment difference between the input timelines. |
| Sync gets progressively worse over time | Inconsistent timing, source clocks, or durations. Compare timestamps and endpoints rather than assuming an offset will fix it. |
| Sync jumps at each repeat | Loop seeking, keyframe placement, or a discontinuity at the loop seam. |
Capture the inputs and inspect their timestamps
Record the exact setup
Before changing the command, save the full FFmpeg command with the YouTube stream key redacted, the output of ffmpeg -version, the operating environment, and whether audio and video are in one muxed file or separate inputs. Note the approximate time when sync first changes and whether that time matches a loop boundary.
Probe each source
Run this once for each input file, replacing source.mp4 with its path:

ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format -of json source.mp4
Record each audio and video stream’s codec, time base, start time, duration, frame rate, and (for audio) sample rate. Check whether timestamps are monotonic and compare the audio and video start and end times. If the sources have separate files, probe both; matching nominal frame rates or sample rates alone does not establish that their clocks or timelines align.
These measurements help distinguish an initial timing difference from a growing discrepancy or a bad loop join. Without the files, probe output, and FFmpeg logs, it is not possible to identify which one is responsible in a particular stream.
Make sure every repeating input is actually looped
-stream_loop is an input option. Put it immediately before the -i for the input you want to repeat. Use -stream_loop -1 for an infinite loop. For example, a single muxed file can be supplied like this:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i source.mp4 ...
The ellipsis is not a usable command: retain the output, encoding, and YouTube destination options from your working setup. Do not copy a stream key into logs or publish it.
Separate audio and video inputs
Looping a video input does not automatically make a separate audio input repeat. If both should repeat, set the loop option before each respective -i, for example:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i video.mp4 -stream_loop -1 -i audio.wav ...
Decide whether the audio and video should restart together or follow different cycles before configuring them. Independent loops can create a seam or timing relationship you did not intend; test the boundary rather than assuming that two infinite loops will remain aligned.

Test the loop seam before changing timestamp flags
Stream-copy looping depends on being able to seek back to a valid point in the source. Non-seekable raw H.264 and video that does not start on a keyframe can cause a repeat not to behave as expected. Test several joins locally and inspect both playback and timestamps.
- If the seam is bad, changing timestamp flags alone may leave the underlying join problem intact.
- If the source cannot be sought reliably as used, prepare a seekable intermediate or re-encode as appropriate, then test the new file’s joins.
- Compare stream copy and re-encoding only after identifying whether the fault is at the join or throughout the timeline. Re-encoding can alter timing and adds processing work; stream copy avoids that processing but does not repair a defective source seam.
A third-party long-stream guide describes a workflow that copies video while re-encoding audio and reports slow drift under one live re-encoding setup. Treat that as a troubleshooting lead, not a universal prescription: it does not show that all transcodes drift or that one audio/video pipeline is best for every source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse timestamp and frame-sync options only for the symptom they address
Fixed offset: measure before using -itsoffset
FFmpeg’s -itsoffset shifts an input’s timestamps by a duration. It may help when measurements show a fixed lead or lag, but it is not a general remedy for drift that accumulates or a discontinuity at each loop. Apply it only to the input whose timeline needs shifting, and verify the result at the start and later in the stream. Do not guess an offset from one moment if sync changes over time.

Growing drift: examine the timelines and clock relationship
FFmpeg documents input synchronization as depending on source timestamps derived from the same clock for expected results. It makes no input sync adjustment if either input lacks a starting timestamp. If drift grows, inspect the source timestamps, starts, durations, and endpoints first. A constant timestamp shift cannot correct a mismatch that continues to accumulate.
Frame-sync modes: confirm the installed build’s behavior
FFmpeg’s documented video sync modes include passing frames through with their timestamps, or dropping and duplicating frames to meet a requested constant frame rate. Variable-frame-rate behavior passes timestamped frames or drops frames to avoid duplicate timestamps; automatic mode selects based on muxer capability. A muxer may further modify timestamps.
Use the current per-stream or output option syntax documented for your installed FFmpeg build. Inspect the behavior rather than applying a frame-sync mode blindly: dropping or duplicating video frames is not proof that an audio clock or loop seam has been corrected.

Validate the YouTube stream over time
- Run a private or unlisted test stream using the same inputs and command structure intended for the live loop.
- Check playback near the beginning, after an extended period, and across multiple loop boundaries. Compare those observations with the FFmpeg log and the source probe data.
- Confirm the output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and other encoder settings against YouTube’s current live encoder guidance before publishing. Numeric limits are not included here; check the current official guidance rather than relying on copied command lines that may be outdated.
- When the test passes, keep a redacted copy of the validated command and note the FFmpeg build used. If you change the source, build, or timing options, test again.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Audio is out of sync by a steady amount from the start | Input start times and initial alignment. | Compare probed starts; test a measured timestamp shift only if the offset is fixed. |
| Sync worsens the longer the stream runs | Timing or clock differences, stream durations, and timestamp behavior. | Compare starts and endpoints, check monotonicity, and confirm whether inputs have valid starting timestamps. Do not treat a fixed offset as a drift correction. |
| Sync changes abruptly at every repeat | Seeking, keyframes, or the source’s loop seam. | Test joins locally. If stream copy cannot seek cleanly to a valid point, prepare a suitable intermediate or re-encode and retest. |
| Video repeats but separate audio does not | Loop option placement. | Put -stream_loop -1 before the audio input’s own -i if that audio should repeat. |
| Timestamp adjustments appear to have no effect | Input option placement or missing start timestamps. | Check the option’s position relative to its input and inspect the probe output; FFmpeg makes no input sync adjustment if either input lacks a starting timestamp. |
| Stream-copy output breaks at the join | Seekability or keyframe access at the loop point. | Test the source’s joins locally; timestamp flags alone may not fix an invalid seek or bad seam. |
Or let it run in the cloud

- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream continues from the cloud with your computer off.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
