You can loop an MP4 into a continuous YouTube live stream from a Linux VPS in India by enabling live streaming on your channel, retrieving its RTMPS server URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room, and running FFmpeg at real-time speed. The VPS does the work after you disconnect from it; your local computer does not need to stay on. The steps below use a compatible file and a template command, not a tested deployment. Your actual ingest URL, key, FFmpeg build and VPS network limits determine whether it works as-is.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- A Linux VPS with FFmpeg. Choose a provider and plan that permit sustained outbound streaming traffic. The available guidance does not establish a suitable India provider, bandwidth allowance, egress rate or price; check the provider’s current transfer and fair-use terms yourself.
- An MP4 with rights cleared for live use. Owning a file or having permission to upload it does not necessarily give you all the rights required to stream its audio and video worldwide.
- Enough sustained outbound capacity. The VPS must send the stream continuously at its configured media bitrate, with extra headroom for network variation. Confirm the provider’s sustained egress conditions before relying on the server.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streams. Its encoder guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and for RTMPS stereo audio, 128 Kbps audio bitrate and 44.1 kHz sampling. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that any MP4 can be passed through unchanged. See YouTube’s encoder settings and RTMPS ingestion requirements.
Set up YouTube Live and get the stream key
- Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and follow the encoder setup flow. If this is your first live stream, allow for YouTube’s channel eligibility and setup requirements before planning a launch. The general steps are in YouTube’s live-stream setup guide.
- Choose the encoder streaming workflow and copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. The exact values must come from your Live Control Room; do not substitute a guessed endpoint. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to retrieve them.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of public scripts, shared screenshots, command histories and logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before continuing.
- Use the RTMPS server address provided for the stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP through SSL/TLS; the secure ingestion documentation describes the connection requirements.
Prepare FFmpeg and the MP4
Connect to the VPS over SSH and install FFmpeg using the package manager for your Linux distribution, or use an FFmpeg build supplied by your provider. Package names and versions vary by distribution. Check the installed build and available options with ffmpeg -version and the relevant local help output, such as ffmpeg -h full; option availability can vary by build.
Inspect the MP4 before choosing stream copy. The file needs compatible video and audio streams, timestamps and frame structure for the selected YouTube ingest path. FFmpeg’s -c:v copy and -c:a copy avoid re-encoding, but they do not convert unsupported codecs or repair every timing issue. If copy mode fails or YouTube reports an incompatible stream, encode to a configuration supported by YouTube’s current encoder settings instead. A file without audio may also need an audio track; do not assume that every ingest path accepts video-only input.

Run a continuous loop with FFmpeg
For a compatible file, this is the basic command structure:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv
"rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"Replace input.mp4 with the file path on the VPS and replace the example URL with the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. This is a template, not a tested command: the actual URL format and whether stream copy works depend on your YouTube stream settings and file.

-rereads the input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as the server can process it. FFmpeg describes this as useful when output flow speed matters, such as live streaming. It does not make an unsupported MP4 compatible.-stream_loop -1loops the input indefinitely. Put input options before the input they apply to; put output options before the output URL.-c:v copy -c:a copycopies the video and audio streams without re-encoding. If YouTube or FFmpeg rejects the file’s codecs, timestamps or stream layout, use a suitable transcode configuration instead.-f flvselects the output container used for this RTMP-family workflow. Confirm the resulting stream is accepted by YouTube’s RTMPS ingest and monitor stream health.
See the FFmpeg command-line documentation for option behavior. Avoid putting a live key into a script that other users can read or into logs that are shared. For production, use a restricted configuration or secrets mechanism appropriate to your VPS and make sure diagnostic logging does not expose the key.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start a test stream with representative video motion and audio, following YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators while FFmpeg is running. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health during an event.
- Confirm that video and audio remain synchronized and that playback continues through a loop boundary. A successful FFmpeg process alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Stop the test and review any FFmpeg errors or YouTube warnings before scheduling a longer broadcast.
Keep the VPS process and YouTube’s stream-health status under observation. A process supervisor such as systemd can restart FFmpeg after some process exits, but it cannot guarantee recovery from every network, VPS or YouTube ingest failure.

Keep FFmpeg running on the VPS
For a long-running service, run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd rather than relying on an interactive SSH session. Configure restart behavior, restrict access to any file containing the stream key, and capture logs safely. Monitor both the process and YouTube’s stream-health dashboard; restarting FFmpeg is not proof that the stream has recovered.
Set up the service using the systemd documentation for your Linux distribution and verify its behavior with a controlled stop and restart before relying on it. Exact unit-file settings depend on the operating system, user, file location and security model; no single unit can be assumed to fit every VPS.

Account for YouTube archives and copyright
Long broadcasts may not be archived
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a recording matters, preserve a separate copy or plan shorter sessions around the viewing experience. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Looping does not make copyrighted media safe
YouTube’s terms require creators to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may replace the image, interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed material may require the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s live-stream terms and its copyright enforcement guidance before looping music, performances, films or other third-party material.

Common problems and what to check
