There is no set of three router changes that can guarantee flawless 4K streaming. Start by checking whether the streaming device has a stable connection that meets the service’s recommendation; then review three router settings that can affect Wi-Fi performance: WMM, the band your device uses, and channel selection and width. If buffering also happens over Ethernet, the router’s Wi-Fi settings may not be the cause.
First, find out whether Wi-Fi is the problem
Netflix recommends a stable connection of 15 Mbps or higher for UHD/4K playback. That is Netflix’s recommendation, not a universal requirement for every streaming service or a target for the Wi-Fi link rate shown by your router. Netflix also notes that factors beyond connection speed can affect picture quality. Check the guidance for the service you use and test the connection on the TV or streaming device if it offers a network test. Netflix’s video-quality guidance and buffering troubleshooting steps can help you interpret the result.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. If the TV or streaming device and router have Ethernet ports, connect them directly and retest. A better result over cable points toward a Wi-Fi coverage or interference issue; buffering over both connections suggests you should also check the service, device, or internet connection.
- Update and restart. Install available software updates for the playback device, then restart it and your network equipment if the problem continues.
- Check for competing use. Downloads, video calls, and other streams can consume capacity while you watch. Retest when the connection is less busy before changing advanced settings.
Three router settings worth checking
Router menus and defaults vary by manufacturer and model. Some recommendations below may already be enabled, so check the current setting before changing it. Use the router maker’s instructions for the exact menu path, change one setting at a time, and retest playback after each change.
1. Leave WMM enabled
WMM means Wi-Fi Multimedia. Apple Support says, “WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia) prioritises network traffic to improve the performance of a variety of network applications, such as video and voice,” and recommends leaving it on. Look for WMM or Wi-Fi Multimedia in the router’s wireless or advanced Wi-Fi settings. If it is already on, leave it alone; turning it off is not a useful first step for troubleshooting video.

2. Match the Wi-Fi band to the TV’s location
Wi-Fi bands trade reach against potential speed. A faster band is not automatically the better choice if the signal has to cross several walls to reach the TV. Both the router and streaming device must support a band for it to be an option.

| Band | What to expect | When to try it |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Typically reaches farther and handles obstacles better, but offers less throughput and has fewer non-overlapping channels than 5 GHz. | Try it when the TV is distant from the router or separated by walls and a higher-frequency band has a weak signal. |
| 5 GHz | Generally offers faster throughput and more non-overlapping channels than 2.4 GHz, but has shorter range and passes through obstacles less well. | Try it when the TV is relatively close to the router and the device supports 5 GHz. |
| 6 GHz | Can perform strongly nearby with compatible Wi-Fi 6E equipment, but has shorter range; older devices may not support it. | Use it as a nearby option only when both the router and streaming device support 6 GHz and the signal remains strong at the TV. |
If your router lets you give each band a different Wi-Fi network name (SSID), distinct names can make it easier to see which band the TV is using and test alternatives. Keep the band that provides a stable result at the TV’s actual location, rather than choosing based on the band’s headline speed. Intel’s Wi-Fi 6 overview discusses band characteristics; available bands depend on the router and client device.
3. Use sensible channel and channel-width settings
A crowded or unsuitable Wi-Fi channel can contribute to interference. Apple recommends automatic channel selection when available. For 2.4 GHz, it recommends a 20 MHz channel width; for 5 GHz and 6 GHz, it recommends Auto or all widths. A wider channel can offer higher throughput, but it is more susceptible to interference, so widening it is not automatically an improvement.

Menu names vary, and a router may choose channels and widths automatically. Unless you have a specific reason to tune them, start with the manufacturer’s recommended defaults rather than guessing a channel. For Apple’s guidance on channel and width choices, see its router recommendations.

Quality of Service (QoS) features can prioritize selected traffic or devices, but the best setting depends on the router and how its implementation handles your network. TP-Link documents ways to prioritize streaming on some routers, while its troubleshooting guidance also suggests disabling QoS to check whether it is reducing speed. That is a reason to test, not a universal instruction to turn QoS on or off.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Note the existing QoS setting and any device or application priorities.
- If buffering happens when other people or devices are using the connection, try the router’s documented streaming-priority option.
- Retest under comparable conditions. If performance worsens, restore the original setting; if needed, test with QoS disabled as a separate change.
- Keep the configuration that gives the better result on your router, or restore the original if the difference is unclear.
QoS menu names and steps are model-specific. Follow the instructions for your router rather than applying another manufacturer’s interface directions. TP-Link’s guidance is available in its QoS setup instructions and speed troubleshooting advice.

Use this order when buffering continues
- Run the streaming device’s network test, if available, and compare its result with the streaming service’s published recommendation.
- Check whether the device is connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Where supported, compare playback over a direct Ethernet connection.
- Update the TV or streaming device, then restart it and the network equipment.
- Check that WMM is enabled, test a suitable Wi-Fi band, and review channel and width settings against your router maker’s guidance. Change only one setting before each retest.
- If the router offers QoS and symptoms coincide with competing traffic, compare its streaming-priority setting with QoS disabled, recording the original configuration.
- If the service test remains below its recommendation or buffering occurs over both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, contact your internet provider or investigate the streaming service and playback device before replacing Wi-Fi hardware.
