On 2 October 2026, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) said unauthorized people accessed its identity and access management system, DTUBasen, and downloaded a large amount of data. DTU says information relating to as many as 200,000 current and former users may be involved, but it cannot determine exactly what was downloaded or how many people were affected. The figure is a possible maximum based on records in the system, not a confirmed victim count.
What happened at DTU?
DTU said a targeted cyberattack gave unauthorized people access to DTUBasen, which manages identity and access information. The university reported that DTU profiles were compromised and used to gain access, and that data dating back to 2003 was exposed. DTU said its incident-response team contained the attack and that it was investigating with external specialists. It reported the incident to the Danish Data Protection Agency and referred it to relevant authorities for further investigation. DTU’s notice, 2 October 2026 describes the incident.
DTU has not identified the attacker or reported how the initial compromise occurred. Its notice also does not establish the exact contents of the download, a final number of affected people, or confirmed misuse of the information. These remain unresolved while the investigation continues.
Does “up to 200,000” mean 200,000 people were affected?
No. DTU says DTUBasen contained records associated with approximately 40,000 active users and 160,000 former users. Those are approximate system-population counts, not confirmed numbers of people whose information was downloaded or misused. DTU says it cannot determine exactly how many people are affected. “Up to 200,000” describes the possible scale suggested by the records in the system; it does not mean all those people’s records were taken. Who may be affected, and what information could be involved?
DTU says the records may concern people who have had a relationship with the university since 2003, including current and former employees, students, guests, and external partners. Information associated with active users may include:
- CPR number and full name
- Home address and profile picture
- Work email, job title, office location, and other work-related information
- Registered next-of-kin name, relationship, and telephone number
DTU says home addresses, profile pictures, and next-of-kin details for former users are automatically deleted from DTUBasen after six months. CPR numbers and full names remain. This describes what the system may hold; it does not confirm which fields were included in the download. DTU’s information about potentially affected data.

What risks does DTU identify?
DTU warns that CPR numbers and other personal information could potentially be used for identity fraud or to make phishing and other fraud more convincing. Its notice warns of possible risks; it does not report confirmed identity theft, fraud, or other misuse arising from this incident. Be cautious even if a message or caller seems credible because they know DTU-related or personal details.
What should potentially affected people do?

Will DTU contact people directly?
DTU says it will notify current and former employees and almost all current and former students for whom it holds CPR numbers via e-Boks. The university holds CPR numbers for only a small number of guests and external partners, and does not hold CPR numbers for next of kin whose contact details may be stored. DTU published a public notice to reach people it cannot contact directly, so not receiving an e-Boks message does not by itself establish whether a person’s information was involved.
