Brazil’s presidential rivals Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro were due to hold final campaign events on Saturday, October 3, a day before the scheduled first round. Polling described in contemporaneous previews pointed to a close contest and the possibility of a runoff on October 25—but this is a pre-election account, not a report of the result.
Who is running, and when do Brazilians vote?
Incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro are among the registered presidential candidates, according to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE). The TSE recorded 12 presidential candidacies for the 2026 election.
The TSE calendar scheduled the first round for October 4 and a possible second round for October 25. AFP put the number of registered voters at nearly 160 million; the TSE separately said more than 155 million voters were expected to go to the polls. Those figures use different wording and should not be treated as interchangeable exact counts.
What were the candidates doing on the final campaign day?
AFP reported that Lula was due to hold a rally in the city of São Paulo, while Flávio Bolsonaro was taking part in a motorcycle rally elsewhere in São Paulo state. AFP identified São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro as important battlegrounds in Brazil’s southeast.

Why was the race described as close?
AFP said polls suggested neither candidate was likely to win the first round and described the two as statistically tied in a possible runoff. An Associated Press preview on October 3 also pointed to a possible second round if no candidate received more than half the vote.
These were pre-election assessments, not results. AFP’s report did not identify a pollster, field dates or poll figures, so it does not support a more precise account of the candidates’ standing. Brazil’s first round was still scheduled for October 4 at the time of those reports.

How did the campaign messages differ?
| Candidate | Campaign themes described by AFP |
|---|---|
| Lula | Brazilian sovereignty amid pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump |
| Flávio Bolsonaro | Hardline security policies, fiscal austerity and the cost of living, alongside criticism of Lula’s competence |
This is a summary of AFP’s account of campaign messaging, not a comprehensive comparison of the candidates’ platforms or a detailed record of their policy proposals.
What were voters saying?
AFP’s interviews illustrated the competing concerns, but individual comments are not representative polling. Lula supporter Adriana Lima, an early childhood educator, called him “the only president who cared about the people.” She also objected to Trump treating Brazil “like their backyard.” Accountant and Lula supporter Tiago Lorureto characterized the choice as “a choice between democracy and barbarism.”

At Flávio Bolsonaro’s event, packaging-company owner Marcelo Peressim spoke about financial pressure: “We work almost 24 hours a day to have a good life and provide a good life for our families… yet there’s never any money left over for us to do anything,” he said. In Rio de Janeiro, care companion Patricia Catherina de Sousa, whom AFP described as undecided the day before voting, said: “It’s a really hard decision to make because it involves our country, our future, you know?”

AFP reported that Flávio Bolsonaro was under investigation over financing for Dark Horse, a biopic about his father, with funding attributed to jailed banker Daniel Vorcaro. AFP also said Vorcaro was under investigation in a wider financial scandal and that the matter had prompted a public feud in Brazil’s Supreme Court. These are reported investigations, not findings of guilt.
