To stream prerecorded gameplay as a YouTube Live broadcast, create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into encoder software, and have that software play your video file. Start the encoder, check the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live. YouTube handles the live-stream destination; your encoder—not YouTube—plays the prerecorded video.
Before you start: check that your channel can livestream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. You must be at least 16 to livestream. Check these requirements before configuring an encoder; see YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Create the YouTube stream and get its key
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go live for an immediate broadcast. To prepare a future event, open Manage → Schedule stream. Add the title, visibility and other event details. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains this workflow.
- Open the stream in Live Control Room. Copy both the stream URL and the stream key displayed for that stream. They belong together: the URL is the ingest destination, and the key identifies which YouTube stream should receive the encoder’s feed.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password; do not show it in screenshots, tutorials or public chat. YouTube allows stream settings, including a custom key, to be reused. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in every encoder using it. See YouTube’s stream-settings guidance.
Enter the key in your encoder and select the gameplay video
- Open the encoder’s stream settings. If it offers YouTube as a service, choose it and enter the stream key. If it requires manual configuration, paste the YouTube stream URL into the server or URL field and the key into the stream-key field. YouTube’s instruction is to enter its server URL and key in the encoder.
- Load the prerecorded recording. Use the encoder’s media, playback or playlist controls to select the gameplay file. The precise controls, supported file formats, looping options and scheduling behavior vary by encoder. Consult that software’s documentation; YouTube Studio does not itself play a video file automatically.
- Check the outgoing feed. Confirm the selected file is the intended recording and that its video and audio are playing. Match the encoder session to the correct scheduled stream if you created one.
Test the feed, then go live
- Start the encoder early enough to send its feed to YouTube. YouTube recommends starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event so you can prepare and check the stream.
- Wait for the video preview in Live Control Room. Verify the picture, audio, title, visibility and scheduled event before starting the public broadcast.
- Check the network upload capacity. YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, if the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate is 10 Mbps, aim for about 12 Mbps available upload bandwidth. The connection must sustain the feed; a network interruption can break the stream. See YouTube’s encoder recommendations.
- When the preview is correct and you are ready for viewers, click Go live in Live Control Room.
Choose an ingest protocol only if your encoder needs it
RTMP is the ordinary encoder workflow in YouTube’s general instructions. HLS is an alternative for compatible encoders and specific cases, including HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP. HLS has higher latency because it sends the stream in segments, and it requires specific segment and playlist settings. Do not switch to HLS as a general quality upgrade; use it when your encoder and use case require it. Details are in YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.
End the broadcast and know what YouTube archives
End the stream in YouTube, then stop the encoder from sending content. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same automatic archiving outcome for a stream lasting 12 hours or more. See its encoder instructions.

Troubleshoot a stream-key or playback problem
- YouTube does not receive a feed: Confirm the encoder is running and sending, the correct scheduled stream is selected, and the stream URL and key are a matching pair. Check channel eligibility as well.
- The key stopped working: It may have been reset. Copy the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder before reconnecting.
- YouTube receives a feed, but the video is wrong or blank: Check the encoder’s media selection and playback state. File loading is encoder-specific, so consult that encoder’s documentation for supported formats and playback controls.
- The preview has no sound or the wrong audio: Check the file’s audio and the encoder’s selected audio source or track, then verify the preview before going live.
- The feed drops or becomes unstable: Test the actual upload connection and leave YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom. If the connection is interrupted, reconnect the encoder and confirm the preview is back before continuing.
- The stream is not ready at the scheduled time: Start the encoder early, inspect the Live Control Room preview and resolve issues before clicking Go live.
