The computer running FFmpeg and its internet connection must stay available; YouTube can interrupt a live broadcast, and streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived. This guide shows the setup, a command template, the settings to check, and a cloud alternative.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has not had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can remain on and connected for the length of the broadcast. FFmpeg’s documentation does not establish a specific minimum computer configuration; YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started.
- An audio recording or music track, and optional artwork, that you have the rights to stream.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for your video and audio bitrate, plus headroom for variation.
Do a short private or unlisted test before relying on the setup. The command below is an illustrative template, not a tested command; check your installed FFmpeg build, source files, and YouTube’s current ingest settings.
Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and choose the encoder option.
- Open the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key exactly as shown. The stream key is the credential that lets an encoder send video to your channel; keep it private.
- Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest where available. The URL format varies, so use the value YouTube gives you rather than copying a sample address.
- Open Live Control Room during your test. Wait for the preview and confirm the stream is accessible before making it public.
Prepare the audio and visual
Audio
Use a clean, properly cleared ambient recording. In the example command, FFmpeg loops one audio input indefinitely. If your source has a long silence, abrupt ending, or mismatched start and finish, those flaws will repeat continuously, so listen through the loop boundary before streaming.
Still image
A still image is optional, but a YouTube live stream needs a video feed for this example. Use artwork or a simple background that you are permitted to use. The command loops a PNG image at 30 frames per second; it does not scale it, so prepare artwork at the resolution you intend to send or add an appropriate scaling filter and verify the resulting output.

Copyright and Content ID
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A match can replace the image, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. Having a license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: a rights holder may also need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Confirm both your permission to use the material and any channel allowlisting requirements with the rights holder. YouTube explains this in its copyright guidance for live streams.
Send a looping stream with FFmpeg
Replace the input filenames and output placeholder with your own files and the ingest URL and key from YouTube Studio. Keep -stream_loop -1 before the audio input it applies to: FFmpeg defines -1 as infinite looping. Input options apply to the next input, so option placement matters.

The output string is a placeholder, not a usable YouTube address. Check your FFmpeg build for the listed encoders and run a short test before going live.
Choose matching resolution and bitrate
The example’s 3 Mbps video bitrate is only an illustrative 720p-class starting point if you configure the output for that resolution. The command as written does not scale the artwork or guarantee a particular output resolution. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include these values; select the resolution and bitrate together using its current encoder settings.

For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3, 128 kbps, and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. The example uses AAC at those audio settings. Its video uses H.264, constant bitrate settings, and a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps, giving a two-second keyframe interval.
Check the encoder settings
- Video: H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube’s guidance says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. The example uses AAC.
- Transport: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommendation. Use the server URL provided in your stream settings.
- Upload capacity: YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Allow for both audio and video bitrate and normal network variation rather than planning to use every bit of measured upload capacity.
- Latency: Ambient broadcasts usually do not depend on live audience interaction. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; the exact tradeoff for a particular setup is not established here.
Test and monitor the broadcast
- Start with a private or unlisted stream and confirm that the Live Control Room preview appears.
- Listen for clean audio, check that the image is present, and watch for encoder or connection warnings.
- Test long enough to check that the audio loops without a gap or abrupt transition.
- Once live, continue monitoring sound, picture, and connection quality. YouTube advises creators to continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.
Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says a live stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed complete replay. Keep a local copy of material you need to preserve, and plan separately for durable recordings rather than relying on YouTube’s archive.

Troubleshoot common problems
- No preview in Live Control Room: Check that FFmpeg is still running and that the output uses the exact server URL and stream key from the selected YouTube stream. Verify the channel is eligible to live stream.
- FFmpeg rejects an encoder or option: The installed build may not include the requested encoder or may differ in option support. Check the installed FFmpeg documentation and build, then test with a short private stream.
- Video looks soft, stretched, or the wrong size: The sample command does not scale the image. Prepare artwork at the intended dimensions or add a scaling filter, then confirm the actual output resolution in the test.
- Buffering or unstable quality: The connection may not sustain the selected bitrate. Recheck measured upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and lower the resolution and bitrate together if needed.
- Stream stops after a content match: Review the rights for the audio and image and ask the rights holder whether channel allowlisting is required. A license alone may not prevent a Content ID interruption.
- No complete replay appears: Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Preserve a separate local recording if a complete archive matters.
