How to Limit CPU Usage on a VPS Running a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To cap CPU usage for a 24/7 YouTube stream, apply a hard CPU quota to the systemd service or Docker container that runs FFmpeg or OBS. Use systemd CPUQuota= or Docker --cpus; CPU weights such as CPUWeight= and --cpu-shares only affect relative scheduling and do not impose a ceiling. A quota can make encoding fall behind, so monitor both encoder progress and YouTube’s stream health after every change.

Choose the control that matches how the stream runs

Set the limit on the service or container that owns the encoder process tree—not merely on a shell or wrapper that starts it. A CPU quota caps CPU time; affinity limits where work may run; a weight changes relative access when workloads compete.

Control Effect Hard CPU ceiling? Use it when
systemd CPUQuota= Caps CPU time for a service cgroup Yes FFmpeg or OBS runs as a systemd service
Docker --cpus or Compose cpus Caps CPU capacity for a container Yes The encoder runs in Docker
systemd CPUWeight= or Docker --cpu-shares Changes relative scheduling priority under contention No You want other workloads favored when CPU is contested
systemd AllowedCPUs= or Docker --cpuset-cpus Restricts the CPUs on which work can run No; it restricts placement, not CPU time You have a specific pinning or isolation need

Docker says containers have no resource constraints by default and can use as much CPU as the host kernel scheduler allows. Limits only take effect if the VPS kernel and runtime support them. In particular, Docker notes that rootless resource flags have requirements involving cgroup v2, systemd, and controller delegation. See Docker’s resource constraints documentation and the systemd resource-control manual.

Set a quota for a systemd stream service

systemd expresses CPUQuota= as a percentage of one CPU. For example, CPUQuota=20% allows at most one-fifth of one CPU’s time; values above 100% allow more than one CPU-equivalent. The right value depends on the VPS, encoder, video, and competing workloads—not on a universal safe percentage.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Find the unit that runs the encoder. Check your service configuration and process tree so the quota covers FFmpeg or OBS and its children.
  2. Edit the unit. In the service’s [Service] section, add a quota. For example:
    [Service]
    CPUQuota=150%

This is an illustration, not a recommendation for every VPS or stream.

  3. Reload systemd and restart the service. Use your distribution’s normal unit-file workflow so systemd applies the changed configuration. Then confirm the service is running.
  4. Observe before changing again. Record CPU use, encoder progress, and YouTube stream health. If the encoder falls behind or the stream becomes unhealthy, raise the quota or reduce the workload and test again.

A low cap may free CPU for other services, but it can also throttle the encoder enough to disrupt real-time output. The appropriate setting must be established on the actual VPS and stream.

Set a quota for a Docker stream container

Use Docker’s --cpus option for a hard limit. Docker documents --cpus=".5" as an example that limits a container to at most half of one CPU. In a Compose file, cpus sets the number of CPUs the service can use.

  1. Identify the encoder container. Confirm the container—not an unrelated proxy or helper—is the one running FFmpeg or OBS.
  2. Set the CPU limit. Add --cpus=<value> to the container’s run configuration, or set cpus in the Compose service. Docker also supports equivalent CFS quota and period controls.
  3. Recreate or restart the container as appropriate. Make sure the new configuration is in effect before judging its impact.
  4. Check runtime metrics and stream health. Use docker stats to view live CPU, memory, and network I/O, and monitor encoding progress and YouTube’s health indicators.

Do not substitute --cpu-shares for --cpus: shares are a relative weight, not a ceiling. Review Docker’s resource constraints guide for the available flags and platform requirements.

Measure whether the stream is keeping up

A CPU graph alone cannot tell you whether the encoder is producing output fast enough or whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Establish a baseline before applying a cap, then test with representative video and audio and keep monitoring while live. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

  • For containers, docker stats provides live container CPU, memory, and network I/O metrics.
  • FFmpeg’s -stats_enc_pre and -stats_enc_post options can write per-frame information before encoding and as encoded packets are received. Use available FFmpeg progress or statistics to diagnose whether encoding is keeping pace.
  • Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators as well as local encoder progress. A process that remains running is not proof that the live output is healthy.

Use a measured sequence: identify the deployment and encoder, note baseline resource use and progress, set a cautious ceiling, observe the actual stream, and adjust the cap or workload from those observations. CPU generation, resolution, frame rate, codec, filters, and concurrent jobs all affect the result, so no single quota can be promised to work for every VPS.

Check encoder settings and separate CPU from bandwidth

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Requirements and recommended bitrate vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so check YouTube’s current table for the output you actually use: YouTube live encoder settings.

If encoding cannot keep up, reducing resolution or frame rate can reduce the workload, but it also changes what viewers receive. Verify the resulting quality and stream health rather than assuming one setting is best for every VPS. A larger CPU allocation can help only if CPU capacity is the bottleneck.

CPU and outbound bandwidth are separate constraints. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and leaving 20% upload headroom in its live streaming tips. Lowering CPU use will not fix an undersized network connection; check both the chosen stream bitrate and actual outbound capacity.

Common CPU-limit problems and fixes

  • The limit seems to have no effect: Check that it is applied to the unit or container that owns the encoder, and verify the host’s cgroup and runtime support. A wrapper shell or unrelated service may not cover the encoder’s process tree.
  • The stream starts lagging after the change: The quota may be too low for the current encoding workload. Raise it, or test a lower resolution or frame rate, then check encoding progress and YouTube health again.
  • Other work still competes for CPU: A weight such as CPUWeight= or --cpu-shares is relative; it does not guarantee a maximum. Set a quota if you need a ceiling.
  • CPU looks acceptable but YouTube reports a problem: Check outbound bandwidth, bitrate, and stream-health indicators. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; CPU and network limits need separate diagnosis.
  • You expect GPU encoding on a generic VPS: Do not assume a GPU is present or usable. Availability and FFmpeg support depend on the host and configuration. Hardware acceleration can also involve data-copy overhead; consult the FFmpeg documentation and verify the actual setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

It does not stream from a camera.

  • Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month.
