Yes. If your channel and stream are eligible for monetization, you can select automatic mid-roll ads in YouTube Studio. YouTube chooses when to offer those ads, so you do not have to insert each break yourself. An ad opportunity is not a guarantee that every viewer will be shown an ad.
How automatic ads work on a continuous stream
With automatic mid-rolls enabled, YouTube’s system selects opportunities at natural breakpoints. Viewers can see ads at different times, and some may not be served an ad at all. If no ad is served, that viewer continues watching; viewers who see an ad return to the live stream when it ends or when they skip it.
YouTube says ad delivery depends on factors including the slot, advertiser demand, and viewer experience. Its help documentation puts the distinction plainly: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.”
Choose how mid-roll timing is controlled

These are YouTube’s descriptions of its controls and potential, not a prediction of a particular channel’s revenue. YouTube reported that channels enabling live automatic mid-rolls had over 20% average uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. That platform-wide comparison is not a promised result for an individual stream.

Turn on automatic mid-rolls in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live, then start or schedule the stream.
- In the Live Control Room, open Edit → Monetization.
- Turn monetization on for the stream, then select Automatic for mid-roll ads. Choose low, medium, or high frequency if that control is available.
- Review the settings before the stream continues. YouTube’s interface can change, so use the current monetization controls in the Live Control Room if labels differ.
For monetized channels without rights management, YouTube also provides channel-level defaults for future live streams. Enabling monetization automatically enables pre-roll and display ads when the stream is eligible; the mid-roll choice controls how breaks during the stream are handled.
Eligibility and situations that affect delivery
- Your channel must be monetized, and you must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module to earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams watched on YouTube’s Watch Page or embedded through the YouTube player.
- Age restriction and advertiser-friendly content rules can limit or prevent monetization.
- Ads are turned off for a live stream embedded on an external site with autoplay, according to YouTube’s live monetization guidance.
- Turning on a mode creates opportunities, not guaranteed impressions. A slot may go unfilled, and not every viewer will necessarily see an ad.
Reduce interruptions during important moments
YouTube says automatic mode limits ad disruption to channel members, temporarily pauses mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snoozes mid-rolls for all viewers during high-engagement moments. In the Live Control Room, Delay ads postpones automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. Manually placed breaks may still display during that delay.

If you prefer to trigger manual breaks, YouTube’s live-stream help also names the Elgato Stream Deck with the YouTube plugin as an optional hardware control. The documentation does not specify compatible models. A Stream Deck is not required for automatic ads and does not replace the automatic setting.
