Use two recovery layers: systemd can relaunch FFmpeg after it exits, while FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry certain output failures without ending the process. They address different problems; neither guarantees that YouTube will continue the same live event after a disruption.
Choose the right recovery layer
A restart policy and FFmpeg output recovery are not interchangeable. For a more resilient setup, you can use both, then test the complete path to YouTube rather than assuming a process restart means the live event resumed.
| Approach | Failure it addresses | Where recovery happens | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| systemd restart policy | FFmpeg exits or fails | Outside FFmpeg, in the service manager | Relaunching the process does not guarantee continuity of the YouTube event. |
| FFmpeg FIFO output recovery | Some temporary output failures supported by the muxer | Inside the running FFmpeg process | Support depends on the FFmpeg build, options and specific failure; test the exact setup. |
Prepare YouTube Live and your server
Get the correct YouTube connection details
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream URL and stream key shown for the event and encoder setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS. A stream key is a secret: YouTube describes stream keys as password-like, so do not put a real key in a public command, repository, screenshot or article. Use a protected service configuration or environment mechanism instead. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
Check encoder settings against the source and connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, HEVC and AV1; it supports up to 60 fps. For H.264 it recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations are 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Indian server or route can sustain them. Match codec, resolution and frame rate to the material, and choose a bitrate that the server’s sustained upload can handle. Check current recommendations at YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate page.

Verify the Indian server you intend to use
- Confirm the actual server region and whether its network route to YouTube is stable for your use.
- Check sustained upload capacity and hosting-provider egress terms, not just a headline port speed.
- If FFmpeg will re-encode, leave CPU headroom for the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate. If it only remuxes compatible input, the processing needs differ.
- Confirm your installed FFmpeg build supports the options you plan to use; documentation and local builds can differ.
No particular Indian host, region inventory or route performance is established here. Validate the specific provider and server with the actual stream.
Install FFmpeg as a systemd service
Create a service unit
The example below is a starting point, not a tested YouTube recipe. Replace the executable path and input/output arguments for your source and setup. Keep the key out of the unit file where possible; for a small deployment, a root-readable environment file is one option. The service manager’s environment-file mechanism and permissions vary by system, so check your distribution’s systemd documentation.

This illustrates the service structure, not universally suitable encoding flags. The input path, stream URL format and whether stream copy is valid depend on your media and YouTube’s current setup. If you need to encode rather than copy, use options appropriate for the source and verify the resulting feed in Live Control Room. Do not paste a real key into a shell command that may be saved in shell history or exposed in process listings.
Protect the key and enable the service
- Create a dedicated service account and a protected environment file, for example
/etc/ffmpeg/youtube.env. Store the required URL and key there using the variable names referenced by your unit; restrict the file so only root and the service configuration can read it. - Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.serviceand confirm that the service account can read the input file and execute FFmpeg. - Reload units and enable/start the service:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, thensudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Check status with
systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.serviceand inspect recent logs withjournalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager.
Restart=on-failure is a sensible starting policy: systemd attempts to restart a process that exits unsuccessfully. Use RestartSec=5 to add a short delay. Set Restart=always only if a manually stopped process should also return; that behavior may frustrate intentional maintenance. A January 2025 FFmpeg-user mailing-list post shows an individual example using Restart=always and RestartSec=5, not an official systemd guarantee or verified YouTube configuration: the example.

Optionally let FFmpeg retry output failures with FIFO
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery from certain output errors while the process remains alive. Its documentation includes this pattern for an RTMP output:
-f fifo -fifo_format flv -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 -max_recovery_attempts 0
In a command, place the FIFO options before the output URL, for example:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/input
-c:v copy -c:a copy
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 -max_recovery_attempts 0
"${YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"
-max_recovery_attempts 0 requests unlimited attempts in the documented configuration; it does not mean every error is recoverable or that the stream will remain uninterrupted. These options are version-dependent. Check your installed build’s help and the current FFmpeg full documentation for FIFO muxer support and option semantics. The FFmpeg command-line documentation covers general command behavior.
FIFO recovery handles only qualifying output failures that FFmpeg can retry; if the process exits, systemd is the layer that can relaunch it. Conversely, systemd may restart an exited process after an error that FIFO recovery could not handle, but that new connection still may not resume the same YouTube event.

Test the recovery before relying on it
- Start a test event using the intended input, codec, bitrate, server and stream key. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream health while the feed runs. Verify video, audio, resolution and frame rate, then confirm the event behaves as expected.
- In a test window, simulate a process exit and confirm systemd starts FFmpeg again. Review
systemctl statusand the journal for the exit reason and restart. - Separately test a temporary output interruption if you have a safe way to do so. Confirm whether FIFO recovery is available in your build, how it logs attempts and whether YouTube accepts the reconnected feed.
- Restore normal connectivity and watch the event through the interruption. Do not treat successful process recovery as proof of gapless playback, automatic event approval or continuation of a single event.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Service fails immediately | Bad unit syntax, executable/input path, permissions or invalid FFmpeg arguments | Read systemctl status and journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service; run the command interactively with a placeholder key and validate paths and options. |
| Repeated restart loop | Persistent input, authentication, network or encoding error | Inspect logs before increasing restart delays. Fix the underlying error; repeated restarts do not repair a bad key or unavailable input. |
| FFmpeg stays alive but output is lost | Transient network/output error not recovered by the active muxer configuration | Check FIFO support and option placement in the installed build, inspect logs, and test the same output path. systemd cannot relaunch a process that has not exited. |
| Stream fails to reconnect to the expected event | YouTube event lifecycle or encoder reconnection behavior differs for the configuration | Check Live Control Room and the event’s stream setup; the restart policy alone does not establish whether YouTube will accept the feed as continuation. |
| Unstable health, dropped frames or buffering | Insufficient sustained upload, overloaded CPU, unsuitable bitrate or route instability | Compare actual encode settings with YouTube’s guidance, reduce demands if needed, and verify server capacity and route under real conditions. |
| Authentication rejected | Wrong, stale or exposed stream key, or incorrect stream URL | Recheck Live Control Room details, update the protected configuration and restart the service; rotate a key if it has been exposed. |
