Keep requests in a moderated queue, not on an automatic path to playback. Set clear chat rules, assign trusted moderators, use YouTube’s review and rate controls when needed, and verify music rights separately: a viewer request or an approved chat message does not authorize you to play a track.
Set up a request policy before going live
Write a short policy viewers can follow and moderators can apply consistently. State what details to include, how requests are handled, and what will be rejected. For example:
- Ask for the song title and artist in one message.
- Explain whether requests are queued, chosen at the moderator’s discretion, or not guaranteed to play.
- List prohibited content and how viewers should flag repeated or abusive requests.
- Say that a chat request is not a promise of playback; tracks must be cleared for the stream separately.
This is your channel’s workflow, not a YouTube-mandated request format. YouTube’s live-chat guidance says messages can be up to 200 characters and that URLs, special characters, and HTML tags are not allowed. Its current guidance also sets a limit of 11 messages every 30 seconds; platform limits can change. See YouTube’s live-stream guidance.
Choose chat controls that fit your audience and workload
In YouTube Studio, open the live control room and review the live chat moderation settings before the broadcast. The exact controls available can depend on the channel and stream setup. YouTube documents held-message moderation, blocked words, slow mode, subscriber-only chat, and live commentary mode in its Moderate live chat guidance.

Assign moderator roles and define who can act
Choose trusted people and make the division of responsibility explicit: for example, who reviews requests, who removes disruptive chat, and who may change channel-level settings. YouTube describes a moderator as someone trusted to help build a positive, safe community experience.

YouTube distinguishes standard moderators from managing moderators; managing moderators have more options. Moderators can remove messages, time out users, or hide users. YouTube lists timeout choices from 10 seconds to 24 hours in specified intervals. Check YouTube’s live-chat moderation tools for the current actions and available timeout intervals.
A continuous stream needs coverage across its active hours, but YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a staffing ratio. Set coverage according to your actual request and moderation volume, and make sure someone with the right permissions can respond when chat becomes difficult to manage.

Run requests through review, not directly to playback
- Read the message against your policy. Check that it includes enough information to identify the song and follows your conduct rules.
- Record the request. Keep a queue or log with the song, artist, requester, decision, and rights status. YouTube does not prescribe a song-request queue feature; this is an operational record you maintain.
- Check rights independently. Only move a song to the playable list if you have established the necessary rights and any required platform arrangements.
- Tell the viewer what happened. If a request is declined or cannot be cleared, use a brief, consistent explanation rather than implying it may play later.
- Keep chat enforcement separate. A valid request can still violate chat rules through spam or harassment; a well-behaved request can still lack music clearance.
Separate chat approval from music rights
Can viewers request copyrighted songs? They can ask in chat, but the request does not give your channel the right to broadcast the track. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A match may trigger a warning and placeholder image; continued use can interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube’s explanation is at Copyright issues with live streams.
Having a license may not, by itself, prevent an interruption. YouTube says a channel with a license for third-party content may need to be added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. Confirm the permission and allowlisting requirements with the rights holder before adding a track to the rotation. A moderator approving the message is not a rights check.

Respond to spam and disruptive requests
- Repeated requests flood chat: turn on slow mode or tighten participation settings, then process requests at a pace moderators can handle.
- Potentially inappropriate messages appear: review held messages, adjust the moderation level, and add relevant terms to the blocked-word list.
- A viewer ignores the rules: remove the message, apply a timeout, or hide the user as appropriate to the behavior.
- Moderation actions are inconsistent: clarify the written policy and who is allowed to change settings; give moderators a shared way to record decisions.
Held messages remain hidden unless a moderator shows them, so an unattended review queue can leave legitimate messages unseen. Subscriber-only chat and stricter controls can also reduce participation; choose them for a clear moderation reason, not as a substitute for rights clearance.
If YouTube interrupts the stream
- Open YouTube Studio and check the dashboard for the interruption reason and any copyright notices or strikes.
- Identify the matched content and remove it from the live rotation while you investigate.
- If you have a license, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist, then confirm that the change is in place.
- Do not put the track back into rotation until the rights issue is resolved. Follow YouTube’s instructions shown in Studio for the specific interruption.
