Start by checking the YouTube Live Control Room’s current server URL and stream key against the destination FFmpeg is using. For an SSL error or connection timeout, verify the RTMPS endpoint and FFmpeg’s RTMPS support before changing encoding settings. If FFmpeg connects but YouTube shows no ingest preview, investigate the output format and media stream separately: a working connection is not proof that YouTube accepts the video and audio.
The exact error and sanitized command matter. Without them, no single cause can be identified reliably. Use the steps below to locate the failing layer without exposing your stream key.
First identify where the failure occurs
Read the log around the first failure, not just the final line. Note whether FFmpeg fails while opening the output, reports a timeout or TLS/SSL error, connects and later stops writing, or appears to connect while YouTube shows no preview. These symptoms point to different layers: destination and credentials, transport, an ongoing write, or media ingestion.
Keep the complete FFmpeg log, the exact version/build output, and the command with credentials redacted. FFmpeg describes RTMP as multimedia streaming over TCP/IP. Its native URL syntax includes a server and optional port, application, and instance/playpath; the documented default RTMP port is 1935. YouTube’s stream-specific endpoint takes precedence over assumptions about a URL’s components or port. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

Check the YouTube server URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the stream you intend to broadcast.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from that stream’s settings. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; select or obtain the RTMPS URL if you are configuring RTMPS.
- Compare the copied destination and key character for character with the values FFmpeg actually uses. Check for an old URL, omitted or extra characters, whitespace, or a process still using a previous key.
- If the key is stale or may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg’s configuration. Do not post a live key in a public log, issue, screenshot, or support message.
YouTube describes stream keys as the encoder’s means of sending a feed to the right stream and accepting it. Its encoder troubleshooting guidance also tells users whose encoder fails to start to copy the key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder. A key change will help only if the running FFmpeg process is using the updated value.
Resolve RTMPS SSL errors and connection timeouts
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the TLS/SSL-protected extension of RTMP, and provides the stream’s RTMPS URL in Live Control Room. Use that actual endpoint rather than reconstructing the address or substituting an example hostname.

If FFmpeg reports an SSL error
- Confirm that the URL uses the RTMPS protocol and the exact RTMPS host/server supplied for this stream.
- If the URL appears correct and the SSL error persists, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to try specifying port 443. Keep the endpoint’s host and other URL components from Live Control Room; do not replace them with a documentation example.
- Check that the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. If the protocol is unsupported, changing video bitrate or codec flags will not fix the transport problem.
If FFmpeg reports “connection timed out” or “failed to connect to server”
- Verify the server URL and stream key against the current Live Control Room values.
- Confirm that FFmpeg supports the configured RTMPS protocol when using an RTMPS endpoint.
- If the endpoint and protocol are correct, investigate reachability using the exact error and controlled network diagnostics. The wording alone does not establish that a firewall, router, or cable is at fault.
YouTube’s recommended encoder settings and RTMPS instructions describe the platform-side checks. Follow the endpoint and port guidance there for the stream in question.
If connected, check whether YouTube accepts the media
A successful RTMP connection and a usable live video are separate checks. Once transport works, compare the outgoing streams and output format with YouTube’s current encoder guidance, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health.

Verify the output container and streams
FFmpeg’s RTMP publishing example uses -f flv. If YouTube receives a connection but does not detect the stream, confirm that the command produces an appropriate output format and includes the intended video and audio streams. In a 2022 FFmpeg-user discussion, a contributor suggested trying FLV after YouTube did not detect reported H.264 raw output. That is a case-specific suggestion, not evidence that FLV fixes every current ingest problem or an RTMP handshake failure.
If your command uses the tee muxer and the log reports automatic encoder selection or a codec setup error, inspect the output and explicitly select the necessary audio and video codecs where appropriate. A 2019 mailing-list example described missing useful codec defaults for a tee output and the need for audio codec selection; apply that diagnosis only when your own log points to the same kind of setup issue.

Compare codec, frame rate, keyframes, and bitrate
YouTube’s current settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS as protocols; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codecs; up to 60 fps; a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, with a maximum of 4 seconds; AAC or MP3 audio; and CBR bitrate encoding. Use the row for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate in that page rather than treating a single bitrate as universal.
For example, YouTube lists H.264 recommendations of 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not minimum internet-speed prescriptions. The settings page gives separate minimum figures; check the applicable row and distinguish the encoder’s stream bitrate from the connection capacity needed to sustain it.

When a stream disconnects after starting
Capture the timestamp and complete error where FFmpeg stops writing. A timeout during output shows that a write stalled or failed, but by itself does not establish whether the cause was the source, local network, route, or remote ingest. Avoid changing several unrelated settings at once; preserve the log and test one relevant change so the result is interpretable.
FFmpeg’s all-options documentation includes a pattern for continuing real-time processing after a temporary failure and retrying a stream every second. Retry behavior may help an application tolerate reconnection, but confirm the options and syntax against the installed FFmpeg version. It does not diagnose or repair the underlying link.
Common symptoms and next checks
| Symptom | Likely layer to inspect first | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Fails while opening output | Destination, credentials, protocol support, or output setup | Compare the current Live Control Room URL and key; read the first FFmpeg error. |
| “SSL error” | RTMPS endpoint, TLS support, or port configuration | Use the actual RTMPS endpoint; if it still errors, follow YouTube’s port 443 guidance. |
| “Connection timed out” before connection | Endpoint or protocol reachability | Verify server URL and RTMPS support before investigating network reachability. |
| Connection succeeds but YouTube shows no preview | Media/output acceptance | Check muxer, selected streams, codecs, and current YouTube settings; inspect Live Control Room stream health. |
| Stream starts, then writing times out | Intermittent write or connection failure | Save the full log and timestamp; use retries only as a recovery measure, not as a root-cause diagnosis. |
| Automatic encoder selection or tee-related codec error | FFmpeg output and codec configuration | Inspect the command’s output format and explicit audio/video codec choices. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
