OBS is the better fit if you want to build and manage an interactive production in a visual interface; FFmpeg is the better fit if you can define and supervise a command-line pipeline. Neither choice guarantees a 24/7 broadcast. For a prerecorded YouTube stream, continuity also depends on playback, the computer and network staying available, process supervision, monitoring, and YouTube’s broadcast settings. OBS vs FFmpeg: the practical difference
YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming. An encoder may be software or standalone hardware; YouTube’s setup process uses its server URL and stream key. The choice between OBS and FFmpeg is principally a choice of production workflow and operations, not a documented guarantee of greater uptime or better output.

No comparative benchmark establishes which uses less CPU, produces better quality, or stays online longer. Results depend on the source, encoding settings, machine, network, and supervision arrangement.
Can OBS stream 24/7?
OBS can be part of a continuous-stream setup, but its reconnect mechanism is not a complete continuity plan. The OBS output reference documents reconnect settings for outputs that support reconnect. Retry wait doubles with successive retries to avoid overloading services; setting the retry count to zero disables reconnecting. OBS also exposes total output frames and frames dropped due to network congestion.

Those settings and counters help an operator configure recovery and see some output conditions. They do not promise that a failed source, computer, network, or YouTube broadcast will recover correctly. A 24/7 operation still needs a playback plan, a stable local machine and connection, someone or something watching for failure, and a tested restart procedure.
Is FFmpeg better than OBS for a continuous YouTube stream?
Not by default. FFmpeg is a reasonable choice when you want to define a command-line workflow and can take responsibility for process supervision, alerting, and restarts. OBS is a reasonable choice when scene composition and visual, manual operation matter more. An encoder flag alone is not an operations plan.

The available FFmpeg documentation does not support a version-independent YouTube publishing command or a claim that a particular retry option guarantees recovery. Before relying on an FFmpeg pipeline for a long broadcast, use documentation for the exact FFmpeg version and protocol in your deployment, then test source failures, network interruptions, and restart behavior in a controlled setup.
What a 24/7 kids’ stream needs beyond an encoder
Choose the audience setting based on the actual content
YouTube’s live-broadcast API includes madeForKids and selfDeclaredMadeForKids fields. Audience designation is a YouTube broadcast setting, not something OBS or FFmpeg decides for you. Do not infer the designation from the word “kids” in a channel or stream description; make the selection based on the actual content and applicable platform requirements.

Plan the broadcast lifecycle and archive separately
YouTube documents controls including auto-start when video begins arriving on a bound stream and auto-stop after the channel owner stops sending video. Its API describes auto-stop as occurring around one minute after sending stops; this is platform behavior, not an encoder reliability measure.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition does not establish that a 24-hour broadcast will be automatically archived in full. If you need a retained copy, plan and verify archive handling separately instead of assuming the entire continuous broadcast will be available afterward.

Check rights and platform rules
YouTube says live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. For children’s programming, make sure you have the rights to every video, music track, and other included material, and review the platform’s audience-setting requirements before going live. Selecting a kids-related label does not itself establish that the content is compliant or correctly classified.

- Choose OBS if you want an interactive scene and production interface and can keep the computer and network running while monitoring the stream.
- Choose FFmpeg if you are prepared to specify the pipeline, use version- and protocol-specific documentation, and build supervision and alerting around it.
- Choose a hosted option if avoiding an always-on local computer is more important than operating the encoder yourself. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming; its service claims appear in YouTube’s guide and are not an independent performance test.
Whichever workflow you choose, account for operator attention, content scheduling, power and network continuity, process monitoring, recovery, and archive retention. The cited platform and product documentation does not quantify those costs or establish a universal reliability winner.
